If Windows Update shows 0X08007045D, first verify the characters and where the message appeared. Microsoft documents the standard form 0x8007045D (system error 1117, hexadecimal 0x45D) as an I/O-device error, not as a Windows Update-specific diagnosis. The extra zero in the title may be a transcription error, and the same text can appear during a file scan, copy, setup operation, or storage read. Check Windows Update history or the original dialog before changing anything; then use the Windows Update troubleshooting path only if the update itself failed.
What does Windows error 0x8007045D mean?
0x8007045D is the hexadecimal form of Win32 system error 1117, named ERROR_IO_DEVICE. Microsoft defines it as: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” The definition identifies a failed input/output request, but it does not identify a particular disk, cable, controller, USB device, driver, or Windows Update component. See Microsoft’s System Error Codes (1000-1299) reference.

The string in the title, 0X08007045D, contains an extra leading zero compared with the documented 0x8007045D. Some dialogs or third-party programs may format an error differently, so copy the exact characters from the original message rather than correcting them from memory.
Most importantly, the code alone does not prove that Windows Update caused the failure. A Windows Update error, a security scanner error, and a file-copy error can all be discussed in the same support thread while referring to different operations.

How can I confirm whether Windows Update actually produced the error?
Record the complete message and the operation that was running. This prevents you from resetting Windows Update when the failing operation was actually a scan or a read from another storage device.
- Open Windows Update history. In Windows 11, select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history. In Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history. Look for the failed update, its date, and any separate hexadecimal code.
- Read the original dialog again. Note whether it appeared while downloading or installing an update, rebooting, scanning files, copying data, running setup, or opening a file.
- Separate simultaneous messages. A historical Microsoft Q&A thread illustrates the problem: the question concerns Windows Update error
8000FFFF, while the questioner separately reports0x08007045dfrom a Sophos scan. The page does not establish that the latter was the Windows Update error. Review the thread for that distinction: Microsoft Q&A: Error Code 8000FFFF after attempt to install update KB2744842. - Write down the affected path if one is shown. A drive letter, removable disk, network share, or particular file can point to a different I/O path than the system drive used by Windows Update.
If Update history shows a different code, follow that code’s guidance. The procedures below apply when the update operation itself is confirmed to have failed or when Windows system-file corruption is a reasonable possibility.

Start with Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooting flow, then retry the update. These checks are designed to address common update conditions without assuming that the I/O code names a defective component.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and search for the Windows Update troubleshooter, then follow its prompts. Microsoft also documents a Settings route: open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. Labels and locations can differ on older releases.
Allow the troubleshooter to complete its checks and apply any changes it explicitly offers. Do not assume that a successful troubleshooter run proves the storage hardware is healthy; it only addresses the update-related checks it can perform. Microsoft’s current guidance is in Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.
2. Check connectivity and free space
Confirm that the computer has a working internet connection and that the Windows installation drive has enough available space for the update. A connection interruption or an almost-full system volume can interrupt downloads, unpacking, or installation. The code itself does not tell you how much space is required for a particular update, so use the space requirement shown by Windows for that update rather than a generic number.

3. Check for updates again, then restart
After the troubleshooter and basic checks finish, return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If Windows asks to restart, save your work and restart so pending servicing actions can complete. Microsoft recommends checking again after troubleshooting and restarting when an update requires it.
4. Repair the Windows image with DISM
If the update still fails and system-file corruption is suspected, use an elevated Command Prompt. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. Run this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish; the process can take time and may appear to pause at a percentage. DISM repairs the component store and Windows image. It does not diagnose a failing physical drive or prove that a cable or controller is defective.
5. Check protected system files with SFC
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run SFC after DISM completes:
sfc /scannow
Let the scan reach 100 percent before closing the window. SFC checks and repairs protected Windows system files using the repaired component store. Microsoft specifically documents running DISM before SFC in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
6. Retry once more and preserve the result
Restart if requested, run Windows Update again, and record whether the same code returns. Save the exact update number and the new message. A changed code is useful evidence: it may indicate that the update portion was repaired while another operation remains at fault.

What if 0x8007045D appeared during a scan, copy, setup, or storage operation?
Use a separate diagnostic path. If the error did not occur in Update history or in a Windows Update dialog, resetting update components is unlikely to address the failing read or write.
Identify the operation first
Reproduce the action only if doing so will not risk important data. Note the source and destination, the file or folder involved, and whether the device is internal, removable, or accessed over a network. An I/O error that appears only with one removable device has a different scope from an error that appears when reading many files on the system drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProtect data before repeated tests
If the same read or write fails repeatedly, prioritize a backup of files that are still accessible. Copy irreplaceable data to a known-good destination before running lengthy repair attempts or repeatedly reconnecting a suspect device. The error definition does not establish that data loss is occurring, but repeated I/O failures justify treating the affected data as at risk.
Do not guess the failed component
Microsoft’s 1117 definition does not distinguish among a disk, cable, controller, port, removable medium, network path, or software layer. Check the operation and device path separately, and seek hardware diagnosis if the error persists across unrelated reads or writes. Replacing a drive or cable may be appropriate only after evidence points to that part; neither is a universal fix for this code.
Which troubleshooting step changes files or settings?
The following comparison helps you choose a proportionate next action. Administrator access is required for the command-line repair tools, while the troubleshooter and basic checks use the normal Windows interface.
| Action | Where it applies | Built in? | Administrator access | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Verify Update history and the original dialog | Any suspected context | Yes | No | No changes; records the actual code and operation |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Confirmed update failure | Yes | Usually no; follow any prompt shown | May apply update-related fixes offered by Windows |
| Connectivity and storage-space checks | Download or installation problems | Yes | No | No system-file changes |
DISM /RestoreHealth |
Suspected Windows image corruption | Yes | Yes | Repairs the online Windows image/component store |
sfc /scannow |
Suspected protected system-file corruption | Yes | Yes | Repairs protected Windows system files where possible |
| Storage-device diagnosis | Error repeats during other reads or writes | Windows tools vary by device and edition | Depends on the tool | Should begin with observation and backup; replacement is not assumed |
What common fixes should I avoid?
Do not copy registry edits from an unrelated answer
The historical Q&A associated with this search phrase discusses a Windows 7 scenario involving update error 8000FFFF, not a demonstrated repair for 0x8007045D on current Windows versions. Registry changes copied from that answer can alter a different problem without addressing the I/O failure. Use the current Microsoft troubleshooting flow and the documented DISM/SFC sequence instead.

Do not treat the code as proof of malware or a single bad part
An I/O-device error is not a malware diagnosis, and the number does not identify a specific component. Avoid deleting files, disabling security software, or replacing hardware solely because this hexadecimal string appeared once. First establish which operation failed and whether the error repeats.
Do not run commands from a non-elevated window
DISM and SFC require an elevated Command Prompt. If Windows reports that you need administrator privileges, close the window and reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator; do not modify permissions randomly to force the command to run.
When should I get hardware or storage help?
Seek a storage-focused diagnosis when the same I/O error appears during multiple unrelated reads or writes, when a device repeatedly disconnects, or when accessible files cannot be copied reliably. Keep the original error text, the affected device or path, and the operations that reproduced it. A technician can then test the device path instead of treating a Windows Update reset as a hardware repair.
If Windows Update is the only operation that fails and DISM/SFC report corruption, continue with Windows servicing support rather than assuming the drive is failing. Conversely, if a scanner or file copy produces the error while Update history shows a different update code, keep those incidents separate in your notes and troubleshooting.

Why does the same hexadecimal text appear in different programs?
Windows error values can be surfaced by different applications when an underlying read or write request fails. The surrounding sentence, file path, and operation are therefore more informative than the number by itself. Compare the program’s log or dialog with Windows Update history before choosing a remedy.
What if Windows Update succeeds but the message returns during a later scan?
Treat the later scan as its own incident and preserve the scan’s log details. A successful update does not validate every storage path used by another application, so continue with backup and device-path diagnosis rather than repeating update repairs.

Can I keep using a drive that produced this error once?
A single, non-repeating event does not establish that the drive is defective. Keep current backups, watch for recurrence during unrelated file operations, and stop relying on the device for irreplaceable data if failures become repeatable.
Does DISM repair a physically damaged disk?
No. DISM repairs the online Windows image and component store; SFC repairs protected system files. Neither command identifies or replaces a failing physical device, cable, controller, or removable medium.
Where can I verify Microsoft’s definition of the code?
Microsoft’s Win32 reference lists system error 1117 as ERROR_IO_DEVICE and gives the message “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” You can read the entry in the System Error Codes (1000-1299) documentation.
