If Windows Update shows “0X80007045D denied,” first verify the exact code. The commonly documented 0x8007045D means ERROR_IO_DEVICE, an input/output problem that can involve a failing disk, cable, port or attached device. A different code, 0x80070005, means E_ACCESSDENIED and requires a permissions-focused investigation. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history, copy the complete code and failed KB number, then follow the matching path below.
Back up personal files before clearing caches or checking a disk. Start with Windows’ built-in troubleshooter and cache reset, then repair system components. Only treat the drive as defective after repeated I/O errors or disk-check findings support that conclusion.

These codes describe different failure classes, so applying the wrong fix can waste time or put data at risk. Confirm the characters in Update history rather than relying on a notification’s shortened wording. The commonly typed “0X80007045D” contains an extra zero; Windows normally displays 0x8007045D. Capitalization does not matter, but an extra or missing digit does.
| Code | Windows meaning | Most relevant investigation |
|---|---|---|
0x8007045D |
ERROR_IO_DEVICE: Windows could not complete an input/output operation. |
Storage health, cables, ports, USB devices, drivers and file-system corruption. |
0x80070005 |
E_ACCESSDENIED: an operation was refused because access was denied. |
Permissions, the specific file or registry key, and CBS log entries at the failure time. |
The text “denied” does not by itself prove a permissions problem. If Update history contains 0x8007045D, follow the I/O path first; if it contains 0x80070005, use the access-denied path.

How do I record the exact failed update?
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update, then Update history.
- Expand the failed entry and copy the complete error code, the KB number and the date.
- Note your Windows edition, version and build by opening Settings > System > About.
Keep this information in a text file. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance uses the specific code to select a remedy, and the failed KB is essential if you later need to check package prerequisites or contact support. If several updates failed, record each KB and whether the same code appears every time. A single failed package and a failure affecting every update suggest different next steps.
What should I do before repairing Windows Update?
Back up personal files
Copy documents, saved games, photos and other irreplaceable data to an external drive or another safe location. A disk check can expose an existing hardware problem; a backup gives you a recovery option if read errors increase. Do not postpone this step when the computer is making unusual noises, freezing during file copies or repeatedly reporting I/O errors.
Recommended Free Tools
For a backup drive, compare capacity, the USB generation supported by your computer, encryption or password support, and whether the device will be used only for backup or also as an installation target. A backup is useful only if it has enough room and can be read when the internal disk fails, so eject it safely after copying and keep it disconnected during ordinary troubleshooting.
Make enough room for the update
Check the free space on the Windows drive in Settings > System > Storage. Microsoft notes that inserting a USB drive may be necessary when the system disk does not have enough room to complete an update. Use the USB device as additional update space only after confirming that your important files are backed up. Do not confuse temporary update space with a backup: files placed on a removable drive can still be lost if that drive fails.
Disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down the computer and unplug printers, cameras, USB hubs, external storage and other peripherals. Leave only the keyboard, mouse and display connected for the next update attempt. A malfunctioning device, cable or hub can interrupt reads and writes while Windows Update is staging files. Reconnect devices one at a time after the update succeeds so that a recurring failure can be associated with a particular peripheral or connection.
How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?
Use the current Windows settings path before making manual changes:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any recommended repair and close the troubleshooter.
- Restart Windows, reconnect only essential devices, and select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
The troubleshooter can correct common update-service and configuration problems without changing personal files. If the same code returns, continue with the cache reset rather than repeatedly rerunning the tool. Note what the troubleshooter reports, even when it says no change was needed; that result is useful when you escalate.

How do I clear the Windows Update cache safely?
Corrupted files in the SoftwareDistribution cache can prevent a package from installing. Stopping the service first prevents Windows from changing files while you remove the cache contents.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Right-click Windows Update and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- In File Explorer, open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped; do not force-delete unrelated system files.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart the PC and try the failed update again.
Windows recreates the cache as needed. The first scan after this reset may take longer because update metadata must be downloaded again. Clearing this cache does not repair a failing disk or change permissions, so a recurring 0x8007045D still warrants storage checks.
Could an incorrect clock block the installation?
Verify the time zone, date and clock before deeper repairs. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically when those options are appropriate for your location, then select Sync now. Restart and retry Windows Update. A clock that is far out of sync can make update signatures or service connections appear invalid.
How do I repair Windows components and protected files?
Run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) first, followed by System File Checker (SFC), from an elevated Command Prompt. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. Wait for the operation to reach completion; interrupting it can leave repairs unfinished. - When DISM finishes, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. Let verification reach 100 percent. - Restart Windows, then retry the update.
If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact message. Do not assume that a partially completed scan repaired the files; the message and the time are useful evidence for escalation. Run both commands from an administrator window, and do not close it just because progress appears paused.
What should I check when the code is 0x8007045D?
Test the connection path
Reconnect an internal or external drive only after the backup is complete. For an external device, try a different USB port and a known-good cable, avoiding hubs. For a desktop, a loose SATA data or power connection can produce intermittent read/write failures. Install current device drivers from the computer or device manufacturer’s site, then restart before testing Windows Update again.
Observe whether the error follows the device, port or cable. If one external drive fails while other storage works normally, that device and its cable deserve priority. If every update fails from the internal Windows volume, continue with the disk and file-system checks rather than repeatedly swapping accessories.

Run a disk check
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
chkdsk /f C:
Replace C: only if Windows is installed on another volume. If the system volume is in use, Windows will offer to schedule the check for the next restart; type Y, restart, and allow the examination to finish. Review the result for file-system corrections, bad sectors or repeated read/write failures.
A Microsoft Q&A recommendation for update-related I/O failures is to perform a full CHKDSK check and treat bad clusters as a possible source of corruption. CHKDSK can repair logical file-system errors, but it cannot restore data from a physically failing drive. It is not a substitute for a backup, and repeated scans can place additional activity on a deteriorating disk. If errors recur across ports, cables and clean update attempts, stop stressing the drive, preserve the backup and consider professional data-recovery advice.
When is replacement storage justified?
Do not buy an SSD merely because an update failed once. Replacement becomes reasonable when disk checks, firmware or diagnostic evidence, and repeated I/O errors indicate that the existing drive is unreliable. Before choosing a replacement, compare:
- Interface: SATA and NVMe drives are not interchangeable without the appropriate slot or adapter.
- Capacity: choose enough space for Windows, applications, updates and working room.
- Read/write endurance: relevant to the expected workload and the drive’s warranty terms.
- Warranty: check duration and the vendor’s replacement conditions.
- Recoverable data: decide whether the old disk must remain untouched for recovery before reinstalling Windows.
Storage replacement addresses a confirmed hardware problem; it does not repair a permissions error, a damaged update cache or a corrupted component store. If the old disk may contain recoverable files, do not format or reinstall onto it before deciding whether a recovery service or the manufacturer should examine it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if the code is actually 0x80070005?
Use the access-denied path instead of treating the disk as the primary suspect. Microsoft classifies 0x80070005 as E_ACCESSDENIED.
- Open
%Windir%LogsCBSCBS.login a text editor with administrator rights, or copy it to another location before reviewing. - Search for
0x80070005and match each occurrence to the time shown in Update history. - Identify the file, registry key or operation that Windows says was denied.
- Record the surrounding lines and avoid changing permissions blindly. Broad permission changes can weaken system security or break servicing.
If the log points to a specific component, preserve the entry and the failed KB for Microsoft support. A permissions failure and an I/O failure can occur on the same computer, but they require different evidence and remedies. Do not use an SSD purchase or a disk-format operation as a response to an access-denied code unless separate storage evidence supports it.
How do I rule out package, network and compatibility problems?
- Package match: confirm that the update applies to your Windows edition, version and CPU architecture.
- Prerequisites: check whether the failed KB requires an earlier servicing update or restart.
- Network policy: verify that firewall or proxy rules allow the Windows Update endpoints required by your organization or connection.
- Drivers: use current drivers supplied by the computer or device manufacturer, especially after isolating USB, storage or chipset hardware.
- Repeatability: note whether the failure occurs with one KB or every update. A single package points toward applicability or package corruption; failures across unrelated updates justify broader servicing and hardware checks.
Do not disable security controls permanently to force an installation. If a managed PC uses an organization’s proxy or update server, its administrator may need to verify those rules. Confirm the computer’s architecture and Windows build before manually obtaining a package; installing an inapplicable package can create another servicing failure.

What evidence should I provide when escalating?
Contact Microsoft or the relevant hardware vendor after preserving the information below:
- The exact error code and failed KB copied from Update history.
- Windows edition, version, build and CPU architecture.
- The date and time of each failed attempt.
- Results from the troubleshooter, cache reset, DISM, SFC and CHKDSK.
- Relevant entries from
%Windir%LogsCBSCBS.logand available Windows Update logs. - Computer model, storage model, connection type, firmware information and any peripherals that were connected.
- Whether the failure follows a particular port, cable, drive or update package.
This record lets support distinguish a servicing problem from a failing device instead of repeating generic steps. Include the exact command output or a clear transcription, along with whether the machine can still copy files normally. Keep the original backup and drive untouched if a hardware vendor or recovery service requests diagnostic access.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and it includes an app-crash log plus settings and cleanup tools. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary—no utility repairs every update failure.
What should I do if Windows will not boot after a disk check?
Do not repeatedly restart a system that reports worsening disk errors. Use the backup made before troubleshooting, disconnect nonessential devices, and seek support from Microsoft or the drive or computer manufacturer with the CHKDSK result and hardware details. If important files were not backed up and the drive is failing, prioritize data recovery before reinstalling Windows or formatting the disk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete the entire SoftwareDistribution folder?
Stop the Windows Update service first and remove the folder’s contents rather than deleting the parent folder. Windows recreates the needed cache files; deleting unrelated folders under C:Windows can create additional servicing problems.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Does 0x8007045D always mean my SSD is dying?
No. The code identifies an input/output failure, which can also come from a loose connection, bad cable, USB hub, port, driver or file-system corruption. Repeated errors after those checks, together with bad-sector findings, make hardware failure more likely.
Where can I find the Windows build number for support?
Open Settings, choose System, then About, and record Windows edition, version, OS build and system type. Include these details with the failed KB and complete code so support can check update applicability.
Should I change folder permissions to fix 0x80070005?
Not broadly. First use CBS.log to identify the exact denied file, key or operation; indiscriminate permission changes can weaken security or disrupt Windows servicing. Provide the timestamped log entry to Microsoft or your administrator instead.

Is 0X80007045D a separate Windows error?
Usually it is a mistyped or transposed version of 0x8007045D. Open Update history and copy the code exactly; one extra zero can send you to the wrong troubleshooting path.
Why might Windows ask for a USB drive during an update?
Microsoft notes that removable USB storage may be needed when the Windows drive lacks enough free space. Check Storage first, use a suitable drive, and keep a separate backup of irreplaceable files.
Should I run SFC before DISM?
Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth first, then run sfc /scannow. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses while checking protected system files.
Can CHKDSK recover files from a failing disk?
CHKDSK can correct logical file-system errors, but it cannot restore data from physically failing media. Back up first and prioritize professional recovery if errors, freezes or read failures continue.
What should I compare when buying replacement storage?
Check SATA or NVMe interface compatibility, capacity, read/write endurance, warranty terms and whether the old drive still contains recoverable data. Replacement storage is appropriate only when hardware evidence supports a failing drive.
