Fix a broken WordPress homepage in this order: identify whether the site uses a block or classic theme, determine which page or template is actually rendering, inspect the template and Styles that control it, clear every relevant cache, and only then add narrowly scoped CSS. If the editor and public page disagree, verify that the stylesheet is loading and that the saved version is reaching visitors. Invalid blocks require recovery and conflict isolation rather than arbitrary markup edits.

Start with the symptom, not a random CSS change

A homepage that looks wrong can have several different causes: the wrong template is being edited, a global style is overriding a block, a stylesheet request is failing, a cache is serving an older page, or a block contains content WordPress can no longer validate. The quickest route is to classify what you see before changing anything.

What you see Most useful first check Likely repair path
The editor looks correct but the public page is old or unstyled Open the URL while logged out or in a private window, then clear browser, page, object, CDN and host caches Confirm that the save completed and that the front end receives the current CSS
The homepage has the wrong header, footer, width or navigation Identify the active template and its template parts Edit the block-theme template or the classic theme’s assigned homepage
Only one block is misaligned Inspect that block’s settings and computed styles Use block-level Styles or narrowly scoped Additional CSS
The entire page is blank or has no styling Inspect failed CSS requests and server responses Repair the enqueue path, media condition, dependency or cache version
WordPress says a block contains unexpected or invalid content Use Attempt Block Recovery and check the block’s supported attributes Remove unsupported markup, then isolate theme and plugin conflicts

Do not edit the page content until you know whether the visible structure comes from page content, a template, or a template part. Changing the wrong layer can make the problem appear to move without fixing its source.

Identify how your homepage is built

Block themes: the homepage may be a template

In the dashboard, open Appearance > Editor. If that menu exists, the site is using the Site Editor and the homepage is commonly assembled from a theme template rather than an ordinary item in Pages. The template can contain the header, navigation, content area, footer and layout wrappers that determine the final geometry.

  1. Open Appearance > Editor.
  2. Open Design or Templates, depending on the WordPress version and theme interface.
  3. Locate the template used for the front page. Check the template name shown when you open the page or template settings.
  4. Open Patterns or Template parts to inspect shared headers, footers and navigation.
  5. Record the active theme and the template name before making a change.

A block-theme front page might not appear as a normal page because the template supplies much of its structure. If you edit a page in Pages while the template is responsible for the visible wrapper, your change may have no effect on the symptom.

Classic themes: a page is usually assigned as the homepage

For a classic theme, open Settings > Reading and check the Your homepage displays setting. A static page selection identifies the page whose content is rendered at the site root. If the site is set to show latest posts, the front page is generated by the theme’s home or index template instead of a selected page.

  1. Open Settings > Reading.
  2. Note whether the site displays latest posts or a static page.
  3. If it uses a static page, open the selected page and inspect its page template in the editor sidebar.
  4. If it uses latest posts, inspect the theme’s home, front-page or index template through the theme’s supported customization tools.

The exact template hierarchy varies by theme. Do not assume that a page titled Home controls the root URL unless Reading settings and the template assignment confirm it.

Reproduce the problem as a visitor

Administrator sessions can show fresh, uncached content while ordinary visitors receive a cached response. Test the published URL in a private window or after logging out, and perform a hard reload. Compare the result with the editor only after the save indicator confirms that the change was stored.

  1. Copy the public homepage URL.
  2. Open it in a private or incognito window where you are not logged in.
  3. Reload once with the browser’s normal reload and once with a hard reload.
  4. Clear the browser cache if the old layout persists.
  5. Purge any page cache, object cache, CDN cache and host cache used by the site.
  6. Return to the Site Editor or page editor and confirm that every changed template, template part, Style and page was saved.

Cache invalidation is not limited to the browser. A page-cache plugin, reverse proxy, content-delivery network or hosting layer can each retain an older HTML document or stylesheet. Purge the layer that serves the stale response, then retest while logged out. If only administrators see the fix, the public cache is still part of the problem.

Repair a block-theme homepage in the Site Editor

Inspect the template and template parts

Open the homepage template and expand its List View. Look for the outer Group, Stack, Row, Columns or Cover blocks that establish width, padding and alignment. Then open the header, navigation and footer template parts separately. A misplaced setting in a shared part can affect every page that uses it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check whether the main content is inside a constrained or full-width layout.
  • Check the selected content width and wide width values.
  • Look for fixed minimum heights, excessive padding or a background image that forces unexpected space.
  • Confirm that the navigation and header are in the intended template part, not duplicated inside page content.
  • Use List View to find empty Group or Spacer blocks that create unexplained gaps.

If the same header or content width is wrong on several pages, fix the shared template part or global Style rather than adding a homepage-only selector.

Use Styles before writing CSS

Open Appearance > Editor > Styles. Styles controls global typography, colors, layout, spacing and the appearance of supported blocks. WordPress recommends starting with these controls before adding custom CSS because the settings remain connected to the editor’s design system and are easier to review later.

  1. Open Styles and review the global typography and color settings.
  2. Open Layout and check content width, wide width, padding and block spacing.
  3. Open the specific block category when only headings, buttons, images, navigation or another block type is affected.
  4. Use the block’s individual settings for a one-off adjustment rather than changing the global value.
  5. Inspect the preview at desktop and narrow widths before saving.

Global Styles apply beyond the homepage. A change to body typography, the default Group block or content width can alter posts, pages and templates throughout the site. Check the scope label before saving a value that appears to solve one page.

Undo an experimental global change

If a recent Styles experiment caused the regression, open the Styles options menu (the three-dot menu in the Styles interface) and use the available reset or revert control. In current documentation for WordPress 6.9, the Additional CSS control is also reached from the ellipsis menu in the Styles header, so it may not appear as a separate button.

Repair a classic-theme homepage

Confirm the assigned page and page template

After checking Settings > Reading, open the assigned static page. In the page editor sidebar, inspect the Template field. A theme may provide a full-width, landing-page or no-sidebar template that changes the wrappers around the content.

  • Verify that the page is published and is the page selected for the homepage.
  • Check whether the selected template intentionally removes the header, footer or sidebar.
  • Review the page’s block or classic editor content for empty Spacer blocks, manual line breaks and oversized image dimensions.
  • Use the theme’s supported Customizer controls for site-wide widths, colors and typography before adding a global rule.

If the site displays latest posts instead of a static page, editing a page named Home will not change the root URL. The theme’s front-page or home template is the relevant layer.

Separate page content from theme structure

View the homepage source and inspect the outer containers around the content. If the unwanted margin, header or footer exists outside the page content wrapper, a page-level CSS rule cannot reliably fix it. Change the template or theme setting that creates that wrapper. If the error is inside the content wrapper and appears only on this page, a page-specific class or block setting is more appropriate.

Choose the smallest effective CSS scope

Additional CSS is useful when the visual controls cannot express a required rule, but its scope should be deliberate. A rule can be global, limited to a block type, or limited to one element on one template. Narrow scope reduces the chance of changing unrelated pages.

Route Use it when Trade-off
Styles panel The design change is supported by typography, color, layout, spacing or block controls Best integration and rollback; may not express unusual selectors or states
Site-wide Additional CSS A deliberate rule must apply across the site or a defined block type Powerful but easier to override or broaden accidentally
Per-block Additional CSS The rule belongs to one block type and should travel with that block configuration Syntax and scope differ from full selectors; complex states may need a full rule
Theme or plugin stylesheet The rule is part of a maintained implementation and must be loaded in editor and front end Requires code access, enqueueing and version management

Site-wide Additional CSS

In a block theme, open Appearance > Editor > Styles, open the ellipsis menu in the Styles header and choose Additional CSS where that control is available. In a classic theme, the control is commonly under Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS. Add a selector that identifies the intended region instead of styling every element of a generic type.

.home .front-hero {
max-width: 72rem;
margin-inline: auto;
padding-inline: 1.25rem;
}

The example limits the change to the front-page context and a named component. Replace the class with one that actually exists in your markup; do not paste it unchanged and expect it to match your theme.

Per-block Additional CSS

Some block-theme interfaces provide Additional CSS for a block type inside Styles. The per-block field generally expects property and value declarations rather than a complete selector. For example:

margin-block-end: 0;
max-width: 70rem;

Use a full selector with braces when you need a pseudo-state, a descendant relationship or another complex condition. Inspect the field’s help text before pasting a complete rule, because a selector in a property-only field will be ignored or saved as invalid CSS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a recoverable copy

Additional CSS is associated with the active theme and is cleared when the theme is switched. Keep a copy in version control or a documented change log before changing themes, and record why each rule exists. This also makes it possible to remove a regression without guessing which declaration was responsible.

Find out why CSS is not loading

Use browser developer tools

When a rule has no effect, inspect the element on the public page rather than editing repeatedly. In the browser’s developer tools, select the element and review the Styles and Computed panels.

  1. Check whether the selector matches the element at all.
  2. Look for a crossed-out declaration; it is being overridden by a later or more specific rule.
  3. Check media queries and viewport conditions that disable the rule at the current width.
  4. Inspect the Network panel for the stylesheet request and its HTTP status.
  5. Open the response and verify that it contains the current rule, not an older cached copy.
  6. Check the page source for the expected stylesheet link and its path.

A missing request, wrong path, restrictive media condition or later declaration requires a different fix from a specificity conflict. Do not increase specificity blindly; first identify which rule wins and why.

Enqueue a maintained stylesheet correctly

Code that supplies front-end styles should register and enqueue the stylesheet through wp_enqueue_style rather than inserting an untracked link in page content. The version parameter appends a query string that helps browsers and intermediary caches distinguish a new file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
function theme_front_styles() {
wp_enqueue_style(
'theme-front',
get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/assets/front.css',
array(),
'2026.10.15'
);
}
add_action('wp_enqueue_scripts', 'theme_front_styles');

The version shown is an example release value, not a requirement to use that date. Change it whenever the file changes, or use a build system that supplies a reproducible version.

Load block content styles in the right context

WordPress distinguishes between editor-interface assets and styles that belong to block content. Use enqueue_block_editor_assets for controls and other editor UI assets. For styles that affect block content, enqueue_block_assets is the primary hook from WordPress 6.3 onward, and it also loads in the iframed editor. A stylesheet attached only to an editor UI hook may make the editor look right while leaving the public page unchanged.

After changing an enqueue hook, test both contexts: the published homepage while logged out and the editor preview. If one is correct and the other is not, the stylesheet is probably scoped to only one context, or the selector depends on markup that differs between them.

Fix common homepage symptoms

The page is blank or unstyled

  • View the public page source and confirm that the expected stylesheet link exists.
  • Open the stylesheet URL directly and check for a successful response rather than an error page or redirect.
  • Check the Network panel for a wrong path, blocked request or media condition that evaluates false.
  • Purge caches after correcting the file or enqueue call.
  • Temporarily disable only the suspect optimization or concatenation feature in a safe test environment, then retest.

If the HTML is present but visual rules are absent, the failure is usually in asset delivery, not in the page editor. If the HTML itself is missing, inspect the selected homepage, template and server-side errors before changing CSS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Content is too wide, narrow or offset

  1. Identify the outermost Group, Row, Stack or Columns block around the content.
  2. Check its layout mode, content width, wide width, padding and alignment in Styles.
  3. Check the template for a second wrapper imposing a different max-width or padding.
  4. Inspect computed styles to find the declaration that wins.
  5. Change the controlling Style or wrapper, then verify pages that share the same template.

A width rule on an inner heading cannot correct a constrained outer container. Fix the first wrapper that establishes the available space.

Header, footer or navigation is wrong

In a block theme, open the relevant template part and inspect its navigation, Group and alignment settings. In a classic theme, use the theme’s header, menu and Customizer controls or the template responsible for the front page. A homepage-only CSS override is appropriate only when the shared part is correct elsewhere and the homepage genuinely needs a different presentation.

The layout breaks on mobile

Resize the public page and inspect the computed rule at the failing width. Look for fixed widths, minimum heights, non-wrapping rows, oversized images and padding that consumes the available space. Prefer responsive block layout controls and fluid sizing. If CSS is required, place the narrow-screen override in a media query and scope it to the affected component.

@media (max-width: 48rem) {
.home .front-hero {
padding-inline: 1rem;
}
.home .front-hero .wp-block-columns {
flex-direction: column;
}
}

Test the exact breakpoint where the problem begins, not only a single phone preset. Confirm that the desktop rule is still active at wider widths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The editor and front end disagree

First rule out stale caches and an incomplete save. Then check whether the editor is loading an iframe-specific stylesheet, whether the front end is missing an enqueue, and whether the two contexts generate different wrapper classes. A rule that targets editor chrome rather than block content will not style the published page.

Recover an invalid or unexpected block

WordPress validates a block’s saved markup against the block type and its attributes. An Unexpected or Invalid Content warning can result from unsupported inline CSS or JavaScript, hand-edited markup, a changed block definition, or a theme or plugin conflict.

  1. Open the affected page and select the invalid block.
  2. Choose Attempt Block Recovery.
  3. Review the recovered markup and compare it with the intended content.
  4. Remove arbitrary CSS, JavaScript or PHP that was inserted into a block that does not support it.
  5. Save the page and test the public homepage.
  6. If recovery fails, copy the text or media you need, replace the block with a clean instance of the same type, and re-enter only supported settings.

Do not put executable code or arbitrary style tags into a paragraph, heading or other block that does not provide those fields. Put CSS in Additional CSS or a properly enqueued stylesheet, and put server-side PHP in the theme or a suitable plugin.

Isolate theme and plugin conflicts safely

A conflict is more likely when the error appears after an update, disappears in the editor but not on the front end, or affects only a block supplied by one component. Test methodically so you can identify the offending change rather than disabling everything permanently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use a staging site or a maintenance window with a current backup.
  2. Record the exact symptom, URL, user state and viewport where it occurs.
  3. Temporarily switch to a default theme or the site’s documented troubleshooting mode.
  4. Disable plugins systematically, preferably in groups first and then one at a time within the suspect group.
  5. After each change, clear relevant caches and retest both the editor and logged-out front end.
  6. When the error disappears, re-enable components one by one until it returns.
  7. Update or replace the conflicting component, or keep the smallest scoped workaround and document it.

Do not perform broad deactivation on an unprotected production site. A staging copy, backup and clear rollback point prevent a diagnostic step from becoming an outage.

Compare the two main repair decisions

Question Choose a template or Styles fix when… Choose custom CSS when…
Does the same problem appear on several pages? The shared template, template part or global Style is the common cause The common structure is correct and only a selector-level adjustment is missing
Is the change a width, color, font, padding or block spacing value? The Styles controls express the desired value The value depends on a state, descendant or special selector
Must it survive a theme change? Use a maintained theme-independent design process where possible Do not rely on theme Additional CSS alone; keep the rule in a maintained stylesheet
Must it match in editor and front end? Use block settings or ensure the content stylesheet is loaded in both contexts Enqueue the stylesheet through the appropriate hooks and test both contexts
Is the production risk high? Use reversible editor settings and a documented save Use staging, backups, version control and a small, clearly scoped rule

Version and compatibility notes

  • The documented block-theme Styles interface requires WordPress 5.9 or later.
  • WordPress 6.2 added the site-wide Additional CSS editor in Styles.
  • From WordPress 6.3, enqueue_block_assets also loads in the iframed editor for block content.
  • WordPress 6.9 documentation places the Additional CSS control in the Styles header’s ellipsis menu.

Interface labels can vary by active theme and WordPress release. If a menu is absent, confirm the theme type and consult the controls exposed by that theme rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.

Final verification checklist

  • Identify the active theme and whether it is block-based or classic.
  • Confirm the homepage source: selected static page, latest-posts template or Site Editor template.
  • Inspect the controlling template, template parts and outer layout wrappers.
  • Use Styles or the theme’s native controls before adding CSS.
  • Keep custom CSS scoped and retain a copy outside the theme.
  • Confirm that the stylesheet request succeeds and contains the current rule.
  • Clear browser, page, object, CDN and host caches.
  • Test logged out in a private window at desktop and narrow widths.
  • Recover invalid blocks and remove unsupported code from block content.
  • Use staging, backups and systematic re-enabling when isolating conflicts.
