The safest way to fix Words With Friends is to start with low-risk checks: determine whether the problem affects every game or only one, test your connection, restart the app and device, install updates, and force-close the game. Do not uninstall or clear app data until you know how the account is linked, because the wrong sign-in method can make your progress appear to disappear.
If you are playing through WordsWithFriends.com or Facebook Canvas, check Zynga’s official retirement notice first. Zynga has announced a September 2026 shutdown for those platforms, although the notice currently lists both September 1 and September 30 as dates.

1. Check whether the problem is local or widespread
Before changing files or accounts, isolate the failure:
- Ask another player whether Words With Friends is working for them.
- Open another game or mode inside the app.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Try the same account on another permitted device, if available.
- Check the Words With Friends 2 support hub for technical-help articles, known issues and freezing reports.
If the same account fails on multiple devices and networks, a server-side or account problem becomes more likely. Repeatedly clearing local data will not repair a wider Zynga problem.

2. Use the safe fixes first
Restart Words With Friends completely
Close the game rather than simply returning to the home screen. Reopen it and allow synchronization to finish. Close unnecessary apps as well, particularly if the device is low on memory.
Restart the device
A full restart is low-risk and should come before deleting the app, clearing storage or changing account settings.
Check the internet connection
- Confirm that Wi-Fi or cellular data is enabled.
- Move closer to the router or test cellular data temporarily.
- Switch back to Wi-Fi if cellular service is unstable.
- Restart the router if other websites and apps are also slow.
- Temporarily disable a VPN if the game works on other networks but not through the VPN.
A connection icon does not prove that Words With Friends can reach its servers. Zynga’s connection guidance also identifies router position, connection type, background applications and network equipment as possible causes.
Update the game and operating system
On iPhone or iPad, open App Store → your profile picture → available updates, then update Words With Friends. For the system, use Settings → General → Software Update.
On Android, open Google Play Store → your profile picture → Manage apps and device → Updates available. To update Android, open Settings → System → System update, although the wording and location vary by manufacturer.
If Words With Friends is not listed among available updates, open its store listing directly and look for an Update button.

iPhone and iPad troubleshooting
- Check Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Update Words With Friends in the App Store.
- Force-close the game. On a device with a Home button, double-press Home, find the game and swipe its preview upward. On a device without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom and pause, then swipe the game preview upward.
- Close unnecessary background apps.
- Install any available iOS or iPadOS update.
- Only then consider deleting and reinstalling the app.
Before deletion, confirm that the account is linked to a recovery method such as Facebook Connect, an email address, Game Center or Sign in with Apple. Also check free storage and set Date & Time to automatic if synchronization fails across devices.
If you use multiple devices, update the game on all of them, use the same account and sign-in method, and keep their date and time settings correct. Zynga notes that multi-device use may not be fully supported by every game.
Android troubleshooting
- Check Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Restart the Android device.
- Update Words With Friends through Google Play.
- Force-stop the game using a path such as Settings → Apps or Applications → Words With Friends → Force stop. Labels vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- Close unnecessary background apps.
- Install any available Android system update.
- Reinstall only after confirming the account is linked to Facebook or email and that you know the login details.
Should you clear the Android cache?
If your device offers it, you can try Settings → Apps → Words With Friends → Storage → Clear cache. Clearing cache is different from clearing storage or data. Cache clearing may remove temporary files; clearing storage can sign you out and remove local data. Do not use Clear data as a casual first step if you are unsure how to recover the account.
Zynga’s official Android guidance emphasizes force-stopping, updating, restarting and account-safe reinstallation; it does not establish that clearing app data is universally safe.
Fix browser and connection problems
For a browser-based game that is still supported, try these steps:
- Refresh the page once or twice.
- Restart the browser and game.
- Clear temporary browser files and cache.
- Try a current alternative browser.
- Close excess tabs, video streams, peer-to-peer software and resource-heavy applications.
- Temporarily check whether antivirus, firewall, privacy or security software is blocking the game.
- Use Wi-Fi or a wired connection instead of an unstable mobile connection.
- Restart the router.
Zynga’s older web article mentions Flash, but Flash is obsolete. Do not install or update Flash as a current repair step.

These browser fixes cannot restore a platform that Zynga has retired. If WordsWithFriends.com or Facebook Canvas is unavailable because of the announced transition, changing browsers may only obscure the real cause.
The September 2026 desktop and Facebook transition
Zynga has announced the retirement of the desktop WordsWithFriends.com version and the Facebook Canvas version in September 2026. The notice directs players toward the mobile versions of Words With Friends and Words With Friends Classic.
The official notice is internally inconsistent: its opening notice says access ends on September 1, 2026, while a later section says the platforms will be retired on September 30, 2026. Treat the change as a September 2026 shutdown and check the latest notice for the operative date rather than relying on either date alone.

To preserve progress, use the same credentials and sign-in method as before. A different email from the one associated with Facebook can create a new player account. Words Instant on Messenger or Facebook is described separately and does not carry over progress in the same way.

Recover login access and missing progress
Reinstalling the app does not automatically restore an account. After installation, you must select the original sign-in route. Before logging out or deleting the app, record:

- Whether you used Game Center or Sign in with Apple.
- Your player name and, if visible, Player ID or PIN.
- The device and account on which the progress was last visible.
If progress is missing, sign out if possible and sign back in using the exact original method. Do not repeatedly create new profiles while testing different emails. Progress is expected to follow a linked account when the same credentials are used, but guest or never-linked progress may be difficult or impossible to recover.
If several devices show different game states, update all devices, verify the same account and sign-in method, and enable automatic date and time. Multi-device behavior is not guaranteed for every game.
When a single game is broken
If other games open normally but one opponent or board will not load, the issue may involve that game rather than your entire installation. Record the opponent’s name, the affected game, the approximate time it began and any error message. Do not assume that reinstalling will fix a server-side game record; contact Zynga if the problem persists.
Contact Zynga with useful evidence
When the app opens, use Zynga’s in-game route:
- Open the main screen.
- Tap Profile.
- Tap the gear icon in the upper-right corner.
- Open Help and search for the relevant topic.
- If the article does not solve the problem, tap Conversation in the upper-right corner.
Zynga says this route can automatically provide account information such as the user ID. If the app will not open, use the Words With Friends contact page or the support center.

- Device model.

- The exact error message.
- Whether all games or only one game is affected.
- Whether Wi-Fi and cellular data were both tested.
- When the problem began.
- Player name and Player ID or PIN, if available.
- Screenshots or a short screen recording.
- Whether an update, reinstall, account change or device change came first.
Never send passwords, payment details, full email addresses or authentication codes in a public post or support message unless Zynga’s secure form specifically requests appropriate account information.
