If the original Wreckfest keeps crashing on Windows, start with the low-risk fixes: restart Steam and Windows, verify the game files, disable every Workshop mod and overlay, reset graphics settings, and update—or roll back—the graphics driver. If you see an “Out of memory” error, make sure Windows virtual memory is enabled. Reinstalling should be a later step, not the first one.
First, make sure you are troubleshooting the right Wreckfest
This guide covers the original PC game, Steam app ID 228380, released on June 14, 2018. Its Steam listing specifies Windows 10, 8 GB of RAM, DirectX 11, and 32 GB of storage; the listed graphics targets are approximately 30 FPS at 1080p for minimum hardware and 60 FPS at 1080p for recommended hardware. Check the original Wreckfest Steam listing for the requirements current at publication.

Wreckfest 2 is a different game. It is Steam app ID 1203190, is an Early Access release, and has different DirectX 12 and hardware requirements. Do not apply Wreckfest 2 launch options or graphics fixes to the original game without confirmation that they support Wreckfest app 228380.
Identify where the crash happens
The crash point narrows the likely cause:
- Nothing happens after clicking Play: Steam, permissions, driver, overlay, or installation problems are possible.
- Crash during “Preparing to launch”: Steam client or launch dependencies may be involved.
- Crash before the main menu: graphics settings, drivers, mods, or corrupted local configuration are common suspects.
- Crash after changing resolution or display mode: revert to conservative settings through the game’s settings or launcher dialog.
- Crash while loading a race: verify files and test without Workshop content.
- Crash only during large wrecks or on one track: check temperatures, memory use, mods, and whether the problem is reproducible with specific content.
- Crash only with Workshop content: treat mods as the leading suspect.
- “Out of memory” message: check the Windows page file and available RAM before reinstalling.
- Black screen or driver reset: investigate display drivers, graphics settings, overheating, and hardware stability.
- Steam authentication or client error: this is different from a game crash and may belong with Steam Support.
Try these fixes in order
1. Restart Windows and Steam
Exit Wreckfest and Steam completely, restart Windows, then open Steam again. This clears a stuck Steam process, pending driver state, or temporary resource problem. Steam’s general game launch guidance also recommends restarting, updating Windows and drivers, checking requirements, verifying files, and disabling interfering software.

2. Verify Wreckfest’s files
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click Wreckfest, or open its library page and select the gear icon.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then launch Wreckfest again.
Older Steam clients may call this section Local Files. Steam explains the process in its file-verification documentation. If Steam says some files failed validation, that is not automatically a failure: Steam notes that local configuration files may be among the files it does not replace.
Verification repairs installed game content, but it does not necessarily fix a bad graphics configuration, Workshop mod, overlay conflict, disabled page file, or unstable hardware.
3. Disable every Workshop mod
Wreckfest supports Steam Workshop content, and a mod can become incompatible after a game update or after another mod changes. For a clean test:
- Exit Wreckfest.
- Open Wreckfest’s Workshop page in Steam.
- Unsubscribe from, or temporarily disable, all Workshop mods.
- Launch the unmodified game.
- If it works, re-enable mods one at a time or in small groups.
A long-running Wreckfest Steam troubleshooting discussion also mentions the modlist.mods file as a targeted workaround. If you try this, locate your own Steam userdata directory—Steam may not be installed under the default path—back up the file, then rename it rather than deleting it. An example location is:
C:Program FilesSteamuserdata[User ID]228380localwreckfest early accessmodlist.mods
This is community/developer-thread guidance, not a guaranteed official fix for every crash. Do not delete the entire Steam userdata, AppData, or Wreckfest configuration folder; that can remove settings, mod lists, or other local data.

4. Reset graphics settings
If Wreckfest crashes before the menu or immediately after a resolution change, use its settings or launcher dialog to choose conservative values:
- 1080p or your monitor’s native resolution
- Windowed or borderless display mode
- Low or medium graphics preset
- V-sync enabled for the initial test
Test the game before restoring higher settings. Steam’s D3D troubleshooting guidance supports reducing resolution and graphics settings, restarting, and updating video drivers. Avoid importing random launch options from guides for Wreckfest 2 or other games.

5. Update—or roll back—the graphics driver
Install Windows updates, reboot, and check for a current driver directly from your GPU manufacturer:
The newest driver is not always the best driver for a particular game. If Wreckfest started crashing immediately after a driver update, use the manufacturer’s rollback or clean-install option and test the previous stable version.
On a laptop, confirm that Wreckfest is using the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics. Windows’ graphics settings or your GPU control panel can assign an application to the high-performance GPU; the exact labels vary by Windows and driver version.

6. Disable overlays and background utilities
Temporarily disable these for a clean launch test:
- Steam Overlay
- Discord Overlay
- NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay
- AMD Adrenalin overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- ReShade
- RGB, hardware-monitoring, capture, and aggressive antivirus utilities
Disable one category at a time where practical so you know what changed. A clean boot can help diagnose an intermittent conflict. Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewall, or Windows security protections; restore protection immediately after a controlled test.
Fix “Out of memory” and mid-race crashes
Keep Windows virtual memory enabled
A Wreckfest Steam troubleshooting discussion links disabled paging/virtual memory with an “Out of Memory” crash. In Windows, open Start and search for View advanced system settings, then go to Advanced → Performance → Settings → Advanced → Virtual memory → Change. Enable Automatically manage paging file size for all drives, apply the change, and reboot.
Do not set an arbitrary fixed page-file size expecting it to cure every crash. Re-enabling automatic virtual memory is a sensible diagnostic step for memory exhaustion; it will not repair faulty drivers, corrupt files, or unstable hardware.
Reduce resource pressure
Close browsers and other memory-heavy applications, then test Wreckfest with lower texture, shadow, grass, and overall-quality settings. Check that the drive has sufficient free space for Steam updates and temporary files; having 32 GB available for the installed game does not mean an almost-full drive is healthy for updates.
Meeting the minimum specification does not guarantee stable performance at high settings. A crash alone also does not prove that the PC is too weak.

Check for system instability
If Wreckfest is one of several games that crash, suspect the system rather than the title alone:
- Return CPU, GPU, and RAM overclocks or undervolts to stock.
- Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures during play.
- Run Windows Memory Diagnostic by entering
mdsched.exein Start or Run. - Open Event Viewer with
eventvwr.msc, then inspect Windows Logs → Application and Windows Logs → System around the crash time. - Use
dxdiagto review Windows, DirectX, GPU, and driver information. - Test another demanding game.
A shutdown, reboot, blue screen, display-driver reset, or system-wide freeze is not an ordinary Wreckfest crash. Treat it as a possible overheating, RAM, power, driver, or other hardware-stability problem.
When reinstalling is justified
Reinstall Wreckfest only after verification, a mod-free test, graphics reset, driver testing, and overlay isolation have failed. It is reasonable when verification repeatedly reports corruption or the installation directory remains damaged. Back up relevant saves and settings first, and test the fresh installation with no Workshop content.
Reinstalling cannot fix an unstable GPU, bad RAM, a disabled page file, a conflicting overlay, or a corrupted setting stored outside the core installation. Reinstalling Windows or buying hardware should not be the default response to a single-game crash.

- The complete error message
- Whether Workshop mods are installed
- GPU model and driver version
- CPU, RAM amount, and Windows version
- Whether the issue began after a patch, driver update, or hardware change
- Whether Steam verification reacquired files
- Whether other games also crash
The game installation may contain crash data under a path such as SteamLibrarysteamappscommonWreckfestcrashdb. The exact path and files can vary, so treat it as a location to check rather than a guaranteed structure. Steam’s diagnostic guidance also covers system specifications, drivers, event logs, Windows reports, and crash or minidump information.
For crashes after the game has launched, Steam directs players to the third-party developer. The Wreckfest Steam support page lists Bugbear support at [email protected]. Steam-related authentication or client errors should instead be reported through Steam Support.
