A PS4 with no light, no beep, and no Safe Mode response points toward power delivery or internal hardware. A console that lights up but shows a blank TV screen may have an HDMI, resolution, or HDCP problem instead. Follow the checks below in order, and avoid initializing the console until your data is protected.
Choose your symptom: no light or beep; a beep or light followed by shutdown; blinking blue or white light; solid white light with no picture; or Safe Mode that will not appear.

1. Check the power safely
Before troubleshooting HDMI or system software, determine whether the console is receiving power. If there is absolutely no light and no beep, the TV cable is unlikely to be the first problem to investigate.
- Turn off the TV and disconnect the PS4 from the wall.
- Remove the power cord from both the console and the outlet.
- Inspect the cord, plug, and PS4’s AC IN port for looseness, cuts, scorching, melting, discoloration, or visible damage.
- Plug a known-working device into the same wall outlet.
- Try the PS4 from another wall outlet, preferably directly in the wall rather than through a questionable extension cord or surge protector.
- Try a compatible replacement IEC C7 power cable. The replacement must match the console and local electrical system.
- Disconnect nonessential accessories, including USB drives, external hard drives, the PlayStation Camera, Ethernet, HDMI, and charging accessories.
- Press the PS4’s physical power button rather than trying to start it with the controller.
If you smell burning, see smoke or arcing, find a melted plug, or suspect liquid intrusion, unplug the console immediately. Do not power it on again or open the power-supply enclosure.

2. Perform a controlled 20-minute power cycle
This is useful after an unexpected shutdown, a flashing indicator, or a failed attempt to enter Safe Mode. Do not repeatedly yank the cable while the PS4 is operating normally.
- Hold the PS4 power button until it beeps and the indicator stops flashing. If it is unresponsive, continue only after it has stopped responding as far as possible.
- Unplug the power cable.
- Leave the console disconnected for 20 minutes.
- Reconnect the cable and try a normal startup.
- If it still fails, try Safe Mode using the procedure below.
Sony includes this 20-minute disconnection step in its Safe Mode troubleshooting guidance.
3. Start PS4 Safe Mode
Safe Mode runs the console with only essential functions. If it appears, the PS4 is receiving enough power to perform basic startup, so software, storage, or display configuration remains possible.

- Make sure the PS4 is completely off.
- Press and hold the console’s physical power button.
- Release it after the second beep. The first beep sounds immediately; the second comes about seven seconds later.
- Connect a DUALSHOCK 4 controller with a USB cable that supports data, not just charging.
- Press the controller’s PS button.
Follow Sony’s official PS4 Safe Mode procedure. A charge-only USB cable can prevent the controller from being recognized even when the controller appears to charge.

If Safe Mode does not appear
Try these alternatives before assuming the console is permanently dead:
- A different USB data cable.
- A different HDMI cable.
- A different HDMI input or display.
- A different compatible power cable.
- Another 20-minute power cycle.
- A different controller, if available.
Sony specifically recommends testing different USB, HDMI, and power cables when Safe Mode does not display. If known-good cables and a verified outlet make no difference, hardware failure becomes more likely.
4. Choose the least destructive Safe Mode option
Do not jump straight to initialization. Start with the option that addresses the symptom while preserving the most data.

|---|---|---|
| Restart System | Exit Safe Mode and attempt a normal boot. | No intended data deletion. |
| Change Resolution | Blank or incompatible display. Restarts at 480p. | No intended data deletion. |
| Update System Software | Failed or outdated system software. | Usually preserves user data. |
| Restore Default Settings | A configuration problem. | Sony says it does not delete games, applications, screenshots, video clips, or saved data stored on the console. |
| Rebuild Database | Missing icons, storage-index problems, or system-feature issues. | Intended to preserve data, but back up first when possible. |
| Initialize PS4 | A full factory reset. | Deletes user data. |
| Initialize PS4 — Reinstall System Software | Severe software corruption requiring a complete reinstall. | Deletes user data and removes the PS4 firmware before reinstalling it. |
These options and warnings are documented on Sony’s PS4 support page. Back up saved data whenever the console can still boot. Do not treat Rebuild Database as a universal repair: it cannot fix a failed power supply, damaged motherboard, or physically failing hard drive.

5. Update or reinstall the system software from USB
Use this only when the PS4 can reliably enter Safe Mode and software corruption is a credible cause. For a normal manual update:
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create a folder named
PS4. - Inside it, create a folder named
UPDATE. - Download the official PS4 update file from Sony.
- Save it as exactly
PS4UPDATE.PUP. - Insert the drive into the PS4.
- Start Safe Mode.
- Select Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
The folder names and filename may need uppercase letters for the PS4 to recognize the file. Use Sony’s current PS4 software-update instructions rather than an unofficial download.
A complete reinstall uses Sony’s separate reinstall file and procedure. It erases all console data, so it should not be an early generic fix. If the PS4 cannot stay on long enough to complete Safe Mode operations, reinstalling software is unlikely to solve a power-delivery fault.
6. The PS4 turns on, but the TV shows no picture
A light or startup beep with a blank screen is not automatically a power failure. Work through the display path:

- Confirm the TV is on and set to the HDMI input used by the PS4.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Try another HDMI port on the TV.
- Try another HDMI cable.
- Test another TV or monitor if available.
- Start Safe Mode and select Change Resolution.
For a PS4 Pro connected to a 4K TV, receiver, soundbar, or switch, HDCP compatibility can matter. Sony notes that a display chain that does not support HDCP 2.2 may fail to show certain 4K content. The PS4 Pro Safe Mode HDCP setting can switch to HDCP 1.40, although output may then be limited to 1080p. See Sony’s PS4 display and Safe Mode guidance.
If another cable, HDMI port, and display do not help, an HDMI-port or motherboard fault becomes more plausible, but those parts should not be declared defective without the tests above.
7. Diagnose the indicator and startup symptom
| Symptom | Most useful interpretation | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No light, no beep, no response | Possible outlet, cord, AC input, power-supply, or board problem. | Verify the outlet and cable, disconnect accessories, power-cycle, then try Safe Mode. |
| One beep but no light | Possible power-button or startup fault. | Perform the controlled power cycle and try Safe Mode. |
| Blue light flashes, then shuts down | Possible boot, power, storage, firmware, or board problem. | Power-cycle and try Safe Mode; do not immediately initialize. |
| Blinking white light | The console may be stuck during startup or shutdown. | Hold the power button until off, unplug for 20 minutes, and retry. |
| Solid white light but no picture | Display, HDMI, resolution, or HDCP issue is more likely. | Test the HDMI chain and use Safe Mode’s Change Resolution. |
| Three beeps or repeated shutdown | A startup, power, overheating, or hardware fault is possible. | Check airflow and cables; seek repair if the behavior persists. |
| Safe Mode appears but normal startup fails | Software, storage, or display configuration remains possible. | Back up data, then try Restart, Change Resolution, Update, and Rebuild Database in that order. |
| Safe Mode never appears after known-good cables | Hardware failure becomes more likely. | Stop escalating DIY steps and request a repair diagnosis. |
| Overheats or shuts down under load | Ventilation, dust, fan, thermal, or power trouble may be involved. | Improve airflow and clean vents externally; persistent shutdowns need repair. |
| Burning smell, smoke, melted plug, or liquid damage | Electrical and safety hazard. | Unplug immediately and do not power on again. |
“Blue Light of Death” is community shorthand for a symptom pattern, not an official diagnosis or proof that one particular motherboard component has failed. The same caution applies to claims that a console is definitely overheating or that the HDMI port is definitely broken.

If a verified outlet and compatible cable produce no response, the internal power supply becomes a leading suspect. That is still an inference, not a confirmed diagnosis; power input, the power supply, the motherboard, storage, overheating, and firmware can produce overlapping symptoms.

- PACKAGE INCLUDE: 1 x High Quality 5ft AC 2 Prong Power Cord
- COMPATIBILITY: compatible with PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, Apple TV, many printer, consumer electronics, and power brick models
- FEATURES: High Quality 2 Prong 5ft AC Power Cord, universal power cable is perfect for bedroom, living room office and home use.
Replacing an external AC cord is a reasonable first DIY step. Replacing a complete, model-matched internal power-supply assembly may be reasonable for an experienced electronics repairer. Do not open the power-supply enclosure merely to inspect or discharge it: internal components can remain hazardous.
The model number matters. “PS4,” “Slim,” or “Pro” is not precise enough to order a replacement. Check the console’s CUH model and the part number printed on the existing assembly. Listings distinguish parts such as ADP-200ER, ADP-240AR, ADP-240CR, ADP-160ER, ADP-160FR, and ADP-300ER, with compatibility tied to particular console models. Use the model-specific replacement listings and the separate original PS4, PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro guides.
HDMI-port replacement, motherboard repair, APU or board-level rework, and liquid-damage cleanup are poor beginner projects. A PS4 that was dropped, damaged during a repair, or affected by a surge should be diagnosed professionally rather than repeatedly powered on.

9. When to stop troubleshooting
Stop and seek repair if:
- There is smoke, arcing, a burning smell, liquid intrusion, or a melted plug.
- The console remains completely dead after testing a known-good outlet and compatible cable.
- Safe Mode cannot be reached after testing known-good power, USB, and HDMI cables.
- The PS4 repeatedly shuts down immediately after startup.
- The console was dropped or damaged during disassembly.
- The issue began after a power surge or outage and persists after power cycling.
- The proposed repair requires opening the power-supply enclosure.
Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool is the appropriate official next step. Availability, eligibility, pricing, and turnaround vary by region and model.
Repair, replacement, or data recovery?
Use this decision rule:
- Safe Mode works: prioritize a backup, then try non-destructive recovery and software updates.
- Safe Mode fails but the console is valuable: obtain a professional diagnosis before buying parts.
- The console has no response after verified cable tests: compare a repair estimate with the cost of a tested used or refurbished PS4.
- Local saves are irreplaceable: tell the technician before authorizing a drive replacement or initialization. A specialist may be able to pursue data recovery from the old drive.
- You are experienced and have identified the exact PSU: a complete model-matched assembly is safer than attempting component-level power-supply repair, but it still may not solve a motherboard fault.
The best purchase is determined by the diagnosis: an IEC C7 cord can address a suspect external cable, a USB data cable can enable Safe Mode, and an internal PSU is relevant only after the model and failure have been established. None is a sensible first purchase for a console with burning damage, liquid exposure, or an unresolved board-level fault.
