If the Xbox app shows 0x80070005, Windows is refusing an app or game deployment because access was denied. The spelling 0X800070005 sometimes appears in searches, but Microsoft’s standard label is 0x80070005 — Access denied. Sign in with the same Microsoft account in Xbox and Microsoft Store, update Windows and the related apps, run the Gaming Services Repair Tool, then repair the Xbox and Gaming Services packages before attempting a reinstall. If the error happens only on a secondary drive, check that drive’s installation state and policies rather than changing WindowsApps permissions blindly.
What does Xbox error 0x80070005 mean?
It is an access-denied deployment error, not a diagnosis of one particular broken file. Xbox installations pass through Microsoft Store registration, Gaming Services, your account credentials, the selected drive and Windows networking or policy controls. A failure in any of those layers can produce the same hexadecimal code.

The message can appear while installing the Xbox app itself, installing a Game Pass title, updating a game or registering an existing installation. That is why one command cannot be expected to fix every computer. The useful clue is what was happening when the code appeared and whether another Microsoft Store app can install successfully.
What should I check before changing anything?
Start with the least disruptive checks. They often correct a stale account session or a pending update without removing packages or changing permissions.

- Verify the account. Open Xbox and note the signed-in account. Open Microsoft Store, select your profile, and confirm it is the same Microsoft account used for your purchases or Game Pass subscription. If the accounts differ, sign out and sign back in with the matching account.
- Close and reopen Xbox. Exit the window, also close it from the notification area if it remains there, and launch it again. Retry the installation once after the new session is established.
- Restart Windows. A restart completes pending servicing operations and reloads Gaming Services before you begin deeper repairs.
How do I update Windows and the Xbox components?
Microsoft places updates ahead of Store cache or package removal. Install every applicable update, restart, and then update the individual Store components.
Install Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the offered updates, including any servicing or Store-related items, and restart when Windows asks.
Update Microsoft Store, Xbox and Gaming Services
- Open Microsoft Store and select Library.
- Choose Get updates (or the available update command) and let Store update Microsoft Store, Xbox and Gaming Services.
- Restart Windows again if Store installs a component update, then test the Xbox installation.
Do not assume that updating only the Xbox app updates Gaming Services. They are separate Store packages and can be out of sync.
How do I run the Gaming Services Repair Tool?
The Gaming Services Repair Tool is the supported repair path for the service dependency behind Xbox installations. It is available from the Xbox app when Microsoft exposes it for your installation.
- Open Xbox and select your profile or the app’s support/help area.
- Choose Gaming Services Repair Tool when it is offered.
- Approve the repair and wait for it to finish. Keep Xbox open until the tool reports completion.
- Restart Windows, reopen Xbox, and retry the same installation.
If the tool is not shown, continue with the Store cache and app repair steps below rather than downloading an unofficial replacement.
How do I clear the Microsoft Store cache safely?
wsreset.exe is the least disruptive command in this sequence. It clears the Store cache; it does not remove your Xbox games or uninstall Windows.
- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - A blank command window appears. Wait for it to close and for Microsoft Store to open automatically.
- Restart Windows, open Xbox, and try the installation again.
Do not close the blank window immediately; the reset is still running while it is visible. If Store does not reopen, launch it manually after the window closes and repeat the restart.

How do I repair or reset the Xbox app?
Use Windows’ built-in app controls before removing Gaming Services. Repair attempts to correct the app while preserving its data; Reset is more invasive and can require you to sign in again or restore preferences.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, wait for Windows to finish, then launch Xbox and test.
- If the code remains, return to the same page, choose Reset, confirm, and sign in again when Xbox asks.
Resetting the app is different from uninstalling your games. It recreates Xbox’s local app state, so record any custom preferences you need before using it.
How do I repair or reinstall Gaming Services?
Gaming Services has its own Advanced options page on Windows editions that expose the package. Try its controls first; package removal should be a last resort because it changes a shared service used by Xbox and Store games.
Repair and reset the package
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Open Gaming Services > Advanced options.
- Select Repair, restart Windows, and test Xbox.
- If Repair fails, use Reset, restart again, and test.
Reinstall only after ordinary repair fails
Microsoft Q&A guidance documents an administrator PowerShell route that removes the Gaming Services package for all users, followed by reinstalling it from its Microsoft Store page:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.GamingServices | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers
- Open Windows PowerShell (Administrator) or an equivalent elevated terminal.
- Run the command exactly as shown and allow the package removal to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Gaming Services page in Microsoft Store, install it, then restart and test Xbox.
This command removes the service package; it is not a harmless cache clear. If PowerShell reports that the package is in use, close Xbox and Store, restart Windows, and do not repeat the removal in a loop. Stop if the Store page cannot reinstall the service and move to support with the error details.
What if 0x80070005 appears only when I use a secondary drive?
A drive-specific failure points toward the target location, its existing WindowsApps or WpSystem state, or a policy affecting that volume. It does not prove that taking ownership is necessary.

- In Xbox, open the installation or Install options area and select another supported location, preferably the system drive, for a test installation.
- If the test succeeds, check the secondary drive’s free space, connection, file-system health and whether it is available to your current Windows account.
- Look for an old or partially removed WindowsApps/WpSystem structure left by a previous installation. Do not delete these folders casually; they may contain registrations for other Store games.
- Avoid granting Everyone full control or taking ownership of WindowsApps as a routine fix. Broad permission changes can weaken the Store’s security model and are not part of Microsoft’s primary troubleshooting checklist.
If every Store app fails on that drive, treat it as a Windows or storage problem. If only one Xbox title fails while other Store apps install, record the title, drive and exact stage of failure for support instead of repeatedly changing permissions.
How do I check Store registration and network policy?
When account, updates and service repairs do not help, verify that Microsoft Store is registered for the current user and that a policy, firewall or proxy is not blocking Store or Windows Update endpoints.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Review registration
Use Windows’ app troubleshooting and Store repair options for the signed-in user. Registration must be checked in that user context; switching to another Windows account can hide the problem rather than solve it.
Review network controls
- Temporarily test from a normal, unrestricted connection instead of a corporate proxy, school network or filtered DNS service.
- Check whether firewall or endpoint policy blocks Microsoft Store or Windows Update traffic. Do not permanently disable security software to test; ask the network administrator for the permitted Microsoft endpoints if the PC is managed.
- Confirm that date, time and time zone are correct, because an invalid system clock can interfere with account and Store validation.
If another Store app installs while Xbox alone fails, network blocking is less likely and the Xbox/Gaming Services state deserves the next investigation.
Should I run SFC, DISM or the official Xbox installer?
These are secondary checks, not guaranteed fixes for 0x80070005. Use them when ordinary Store and Gaming Services repairs have failed or when Windows reports broader corruption.
System file checks
Open Command Prompt (Administrator) and run:
sfc /scannow
Let the scan finish and follow its repair message. If it reports that component-store repair is needed, run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Restart Windows after DISM completes, then run the SFC check again and test Xbox. These commands examine Windows components; they do not repair a wrong Store account, a blocked proxy or a damaged secondary-drive installation location.
Official installer
If the Xbox app itself is missing or its Store registration is damaged, use Microsoft’s official Xbox installer or Store listing rather than a repackaged download. Keep the exact error code and the account used during the failed installation so you can explain whether the installer or a particular game triggered the problem.
Which repair should I try first?
The following comparison shows why the sequence moves from cache and app repair to service removal. Required privilege and reversibility matter as much as the apparent simplicity of a command.
| Option | Disruption | Scope | Privilege | Reversible? | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Account check, restart and updates | Minimal | Xbox, Store and Windows versions | Standard user | Yes | Account match, pending updates |
wsreset.exe |
Low | Store cache | Standard user | Yes | Whether Store reopens and another app installs |
| Xbox Advanced options: Repair | Low | Xbox app | Standard user | Yes | Whether app state was repaired |
| Xbox Advanced options: Reset | Moderate | Xbox app data and preferences | Standard user | Partly; sign-in may be required | Whether a fresh app state changes the code |
| Gaming Services Repair/Reset | Moderate | Shared gaming service | Usually standard user; Windows may request elevation | Partly | Service status after restart |
| PowerShell package removal and Store reinstall | High | Gaming Services package for all users | Administrator | Only by reinstalling the package | Removal and reinstall error messages |
| WindowsApps permission changes | High | Target drive security | Administrator | Difficult | Only justified by documented drive-specific evidence |
What information should I collect before contacting support?
Escalate instead of repeating package deletions when the sequence has not changed the error. Record:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The exact code, including whether it appeared during Xbox installation, a game install, an update or registration.
- Your Windows edition and version, Xbox app version and whether Microsoft Store and Gaming Services are current.
- The Microsoft account used in both Xbox and Store, without sharing your password.
- The installation drive and whether another Store app succeeds on that same drive.
- Which steps completed, including the Gaming Services Repair Tool result,
wsreset.exebehavior and any PowerShell, SFC or DISM message.
Use Microsoft Xbox support, Microsoft Store app support or the Gaming Services support channel with that record. Support can distinguish an account entitlement problem from a package, policy or drive problem without asking you to make progressively broader permission changes.

Xbox error 0x80070005 FAQ
Can this code be caused by a Microsoft account that owns the game on another profile?
Yes. Xbox licensing and Store installation use the signed-in account context, so ownership on a different profile can prevent deployment even when Windows itself is working. Make sure the purchasing or Game Pass account is active in both apps before changing system files.

Will clearing the Store cache remove my installed games?
No. wsreset.exe clears cached Store data and reopens Microsoft Store; it is not an uninstall command. You may still need to sign in again if a separate app reset is performed later.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I disable antivirus or Windows Firewall to get past access denied?
Do not make that the default fix. Security or network policy can block Store traffic, but disabling protection can create a separate risk; instead, test on an approved unrestricted network or ask the administrator which Microsoft endpoints are allowed.
Why does reinstalling Gaming Services sometimes make the problem worse?
The package is shared by Xbox and Store games, and the all-users PowerShell command removes it rather than repairing one app’s cache. If the Store reinstall fails, further removals usually provide less information than preserving the error messages and contacting Microsoft support.
