If Xbox Cloud Gaming buttons do nothing on your Steam Deck, use Microsoft’s documented Edge route: install Microsoft Edge in Desktop Mode, add it to Steam as a non-Steam game, grant Edge read-only access to /run/udev, and apply Steam’s Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad controller template. Launch Xbox Cloud Gaming from that Steam shortcut, not from a separate browser window. If input still fails, reapply the layout, restart Edge and Steam, verify Steam Input sees one controller, and then test an external controller.

This procedure addresses the common “Xbox Cloud Gaming controls not working on Steam Deck” and “Steam Deck controller not detected in xCloud” problems. It does not guarantee every browser game will accept every input method: browser keyboard-and-mouse support is title-dependent, and the Edge Flatpak is community maintained rather than officially supported on SteamOS.

Why are Xbox Cloud Gaming controls not working on Steam Deck?

The usual failure is an input path mismatch rather than a problem with the streamed game itself. A browser window launched outside Steam does not receive the Steam Input profile you configured, while Edge’s Flatpak sandbox may not be able to read the Deck’s controller devices until you add the documented udev permission. Even with both fixed, the cloud title must support the input mode you are trying to use.

  • Wrong launch path: Steam Input mappings apply to the Edge/Xbox shortcut in your Steam library, not to an unrelated desktop browser window.
  • Missing device permission: Edge needs the per-user, read-only /run/udev override to access controller information.
  • Mouse-oriented layout: The default desktop layout can send trackpad or keyboard events instead of gamepad buttons.
  • Active input mode changed: Xbox can switch between keyboard/mouse and controller mode when you press a keyboard key or the controller’s Xbox button.
  • Title limitation: Browser keyboard-and-mouse support is not universal, and controller behavior can vary by game and browser session.

Microsoft states: “Microsoft does not actively maintain the Microsoft Edge Flatpak package and does not provide official support for Microsoft Edge on SteamOS at this time.” Package updates or SteamOS changes can therefore alter behavior even when your settings are correct.

What do I need before changing the setup?

Use the following baseline before troubleshooting individual buttons.

  • A Steam Deck with access to Desktop Mode and the Discover software center.
  • Microsoft Edge installed from Discover.
  • Steam running in Desktop Mode so you can add and edit a non-Steam shortcut.
  • A stable connection for the cloud session.
  • One controller path to test first: the built-in Deck controls, one Bluetooth gamepad, or one wired gamepad. Disconnect additional pads during diagnosis.

Keep the Deck in Desktop Mode while installing Edge and changing its Flatpak permission. You will return to Gaming Mode only after the shortcut and controller layout are saved.

How do I install Edge and add Xbox Cloud Gaming to Steam?

Install Edge through Discover, add the installed application to Steam, and use that one shortcut for every cloud session. This gives Steam Input a consistent application profile.

Install Microsoft Edge

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode by opening the Steam menu, choosing Power, and selecting Switch to Desktop.
  2. Open Discover, search for Microsoft Edge, and install the available Flatpak package.
  3. Start Edge once, then close it. The first launch creates the application data Steam will use when you add the shortcut.

Add the application as a non-Steam game

  1. Open the Steam desktop client and choose Games followed by Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
  2. Select Microsoft Edge from the application list. If it is not listed, use Browse and select the installed Edge launcher exposed by Discover.
  3. Confirm Add Selected Programs.
  4. In your Steam library, rename the shortcut to something unambiguous, such as Xbox Cloud Gaming (Edge). Renaming does not affect the executable; it only helps you select the correct controller profile later.

How do I give Edge access to the Deck controller devices?

Run the documented per-user Flatpak override in Konsole. It grants Edge read-only access to /run/udev, which is the key permission step for the built-in controls.

  1. Remain in Desktop Mode and open Konsole from the application launcher.
  2. Enter this command exactly:

flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge

  1. Press Enter. A successful override normally returns to the prompt without a confirmation message.
  2. Close every Edge window and relaunch Edge so the new permission is active.

The override is per user and read-only; it does not make the entire filesystem writable. If Edge was updated or reinstalled, check the override again because Flatpak application changes can require you to reapply it.

Which Steam Input layout fixes Steam Deck buttons doing nothing?

Apply Steam’s Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad template to the same Edge/Xbox shortcut. This is the controller layout specified in Microsoft’s Steam Deck guidance and is more appropriate than leaving the shortcut on a desktop keyboard-and-mouse profile.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
  1. In Steam, open the library page for your Edge/Xbox shortcut.
  2. Open Controller layout. In Gaming Mode this is available from the game page’s controller icon; in Desktop Mode use the shortcut’s controller settings.
  3. Choose Browse Configs.
  4. Select the Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad template and apply it.
  5. Confirm that Steam Input is enabled for this shortcut, then return to the library.
  6. Switch back to Gaming Mode and launch the shortcut from Steam. Edge should open with the cloud site rather than with a separate desktop-browser session.

If you previously customized individual buttons, applying the template may replace those bindings. Test the template first; customize only after you have confirmed that the default gamepad events reach the session.

What launch options should I use for the Edge shortcut?

The input fix comes from the udev override and Steam controller layout. Optional kiosk and scaling flags change presentation, not controller access.

After the existing Flatpak arguments in the shortcut’s launch command, Microsoft’s guide uses:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

--window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play"

The --kiosk flag opens the play site without normal browser chrome, while the window and scale flags make the interface fit the Deck display. If you are diagnosing input, remove presentation flags temporarily so you can see menus and error messages; do not remove the udev override or the Steam Input layout.

How do I launch the session through the correct input path?

Open the Edge/Xbox shortcut from the Steam library every time you test. Steam Input mappings attach to that shortcut profile.

  1. In Gaming Mode, highlight the Edge/Xbox shortcut and start it.
  2. Wait for Edge to load the Xbox Cloud Gaming page and sign in if prompted.
  3. Start one cloud game with the Deck controls. Avoid pairing several controllers until this path works.
  4. If the game ignores input, press the controller’s Xbox button once. Xbox can switch the active mode after a keyboard event, and the button press returns focus to controller input in supported sessions.

Do not launch a second Edge window from Desktop Mode while testing. A second window can make it appear that Steam Input is broken when the game is actually running outside the Steam-managed shortcut.

How do I fix “Steam Deck controller not detected in xCloud”?

Work through the checks in order. Each step isolates a different layer: Steam shortcut, Flatpak permission, Steam Input mapping, browser focus, and physical controller connection.

1. Confirm the execution path

Close any standalone Edge windows. Start the session only from the Edge/Xbox shortcut in the Steam library. Steam Input cannot apply the shortcut’s profile to an unrelated browser process.

2. Reapply the Edge access override

In Desktop Mode, run flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge again in Konsole. Fully quit Edge before relaunching it; changing a Flatpak permission while the app is open does not retroactively update that process.

3. Reapply the gamepad template

Open the shortcut’s Controller layout, choose Browse Configs, select Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad, and apply it. Check that Steam Input is active for this specific shortcut, not merely enabled globally for another game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Resolve keyboard-and-controller mode confusion

Xbox supports keyboard/mouse alongside controller input only in supported games. Pressing a keyboard key can switch the active input mode; pressing the controller’s Xbox button switches it back when the session supports both. If the game stopped reacting after keyboard testing, press the Xbox button once and try a normal face button.

5. Verify one controller in Steam before launching

Disconnect other gamepads, pair one controller, and open Steam’s controller overlay. The overlay should show the device before you start the cloud session. If the built-in Deck controls appear in Steam but fail in Edge, repeat the udev and layout steps. If Steam itself does not see them, the issue is below the browser layer.

6. Restart both applications

Exit the cloud session, quit Edge completely, and restart Steam. Relaunch from the library shortcut after both applications have restarted. This clears stale browser focus and Steam Input state without changing your saved layout.

Does Xbox Cloud Gaming support keyboard and mouse for every game?

No. Browser keyboard-and-mouse support is title-dependent. Xbox’s May 15, 2024 rollout listed 25 titles, including Halo Infinite, Sea of Thieves, Grounded, and Fortnite (browser only); the existence of browser support does not mean every cloud game accepts those devices.

For a controller test, choose a title known to work with a gamepad and keep the Steam layout active. If a particular game accepts keyboard/mouse but not a controller, that is a title input limitation rather than proof that the Deck mapping failed.

Should I use the built-in controls, Bluetooth, or a wired controller?

The built-in Deck controls are the most portable option, but an external controller is a useful fallback when the internal path remains unreliable. A wired connection removes Bluetooth pairing from the diagnosis; Bluetooth is convenient but adds pairing and firmware variables.

Control path Setup effort Steam Input required? Pairing or cable considerations Best use
Built-in Steam Deck controls Lowest after Edge override and layout are configured Yes for the documented shortcut workflow No pairing or cable; depends on Edge’s udev access Portable play and the normal first test
External Bluetooth controller Moderate; pair one device and verify it in Steam Usually, when using the Steam shortcut profile Wireless convenience; pairing state, firmware, and SteamOS Bluetooth state can interfere When the built-in controls fail or a larger controller is preferred
Wired controller Low after connecting the cable Use the shortcut’s profile if Steam manages the session Requires a USB connection and may reduce portability; no Bluetooth pairing step Isolation testing and stable desk play

An Xbox Wireless Controller is a practical hardware fallback because Microsoft documents Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless connectivity plus PC, mobile, and console compatibility. The specific Deck connection still depends on SteamOS, Bluetooth state, firmware, and Steam Input, so treat it as a diagnostic and hardware alternative rather than a guaranteed fix.

What if an external Xbox controller also fails?

Start with one connection method at a time. Remove the controller from the Deck’s Bluetooth list and pair it again, or connect it by cable. Confirm that Steam’s controller overlay sees the device before opening Edge. If wired input works while Bluetooth does not, the cloud browser is not the first suspect; repair pairing or update the controller’s firmware using the manufacturer’s supported process.

If Steam sees the external pad but the cloud game does not, reopen the shortcut’s controller layout and ensure the gamepad template is applied to the Edge/Xbox shortcut. Then restart Edge and Steam and launch through that shortcut. A title that lacks controller support will still ignore a correctly detected pad.

How can I tell whether the problem is Edge, Steam Input, or the game?

Use a three-layer test rather than changing several settings at once.

  1. Steam layer: In the controller overlay, verify that button presses register before launching the cloud session.
  2. Browser layer: Launch Edge through the Steam shortcut after applying the udev override and template. If Steam registers buttons but Edge does not, revisit the permission and relaunch steps.
  3. Game layer: Try a different cloud title known to accept controllers. If one title works and another does not, the difference is likely the game’s input support or its current browser compatibility.

No authoritative source publishes a Steam Deck-specific latency or failure-rate figure for this setup, so a single successful or failed session should not be treated as a measured compatibility percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What limitations should I expect from this setup?

The documented route is practical, but it is not a fully supported SteamOS product integration. The Edge Flatpak is community maintained, and Microsoft does not provide official Edge-on-SteamOS support. SteamOS or package updates can therefore change behavior and may require you to revisit the override or layout.

Presentation flags can make the browser look more console-like, but they cannot add controller support to a game that lacks it. Likewise, an external controller can bypass a failing built-in path but cannot overcome a title’s input restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Chrome instead of Edge for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Steam Deck?

The documented Steam Deck procedure is built around Microsoft Edge’s Flatpak and its udev override. Another browser may behave differently, so the Edge-specific permission command and template should not be assumed to transfer unchanged.

Why does my controller work in Steam but not after the cloud game starts?

Steam detecting the controller only proves the hardware and Steam layer are working. Check that the session was launched from the Edge/Xbox shortcut, that the Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad template is applied to that shortcut, and that the selected game accepts controller input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will changing the kiosk window size improve controller latency?

No. The window-size and scale flags affect display layout, while controller access comes from the Flatpak udev override and Steam Input mapping. Remove the presentation flags for easier diagnosis without expecting a latency change.

Do I need an Xbox Wireless Controller to play cloud games on a Deck?

No. The built-in controls are the intended first path, and a wired or Bluetooth pad is optional. An external Xbox controller is useful when the built-in route remains broken or when you want to isolate a hardware or pairing issue.
