If Xbox Game Pass shows 0x80070005 while a game installs, updates or launches, Windows is usually refusing a required app, service, account or drive operation—not reporting a controller failure. The title code 0x800070005 contains an extra zero and was not documented in the Microsoft material for this problem, so first copy the characters from the dialog or screenshot. Then work through account checks, updates, Store-cache reset, app repair/reset, Gaming Services repair and installation-drive settings in that order. The sequence starts with reversible actions and reserves sign-outs, reinstalls and support escalation for later.
Is the code really 0x80070005?
Confirm the exact characters before applying a code-specific fix. Microsoft’s Xbox and Microsoft Store guidance documents 0x80070005 (eight hexadecimal digits after 0x), while 0x800070005 (nine digits) is not identified in those materials.

Use the procedures below as the documented path only when the displayed value is 0x80070005. If a different code is shown, search that exact value in Microsoft Support or Xbox Support instead; similar-looking codes can have different causes.
What does Xbox Game Pass error 0x80070005 mean?
0x80070005 is commonly associated with an access or permission failure. Microsoft External Staff moderator Ian-Ng described it this way: “The code 0x80070005 often indicates that the system is seeking further clearance to write files.” In a Game Pass installation, that clearance can involve the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, your Microsoft account, or the destination drive.

That wording does not prove that your account is permanently damaged or that Windows is infected. It explains why a download can appear to progress and then fail when the installer switches from downloading data to registering, writing or launching files. Treat it as an app, service, account, storage or permission problem unless separate symptoms point to hardware.
What should I check before changing anything?
Three prerequisites can stop an otherwise healthy installation: the wrong account, an inactive entitlement, or a disconnected service.

Use one Microsoft account in both apps
- Open the Microsoft Store and select your profile icon. Confirm the signed-in account.
- Open the Xbox app and check its profile menu. Sign in with the same Microsoft account.
- If you recently changed accounts, sign out and back in deliberately rather than leaving one app on an old account.
Confirm the subscription and device eligibility
For a Game Pass installation, verify that the PC or Ultimate Game Pass plan associated with that account is active and that the PC is online. Subscription status determines whether you are entitled to install the game; buying a subscription is not a generic repair for an access error.
Check the network without assuming it is the only cause
Open a normal web page and the Store home page. A brief outage can leave a half-created install, but a stable connection does not by itself fix a denied write operation. Continue with the local steps even if downloads appear to work.
Which fix should I try first?
Follow this order so that low-impact, reversible actions come before data-clearing or reinstall steps.
| Stage | Main scope | Reversibility | User impact | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart, Windows Update and Store updates | Windows, Store, Xbox and Gaming Services versions | Fully reversible | Requires a restart; no app data is intentionally removed | Microsoft’s Store and Xbox guidance |
wsreset.exe |
Microsoft Store cache and connectivity state | Reversible | Installed apps remain; Store reopens when finished | Microsoft moderator guidance |
| Repair | One affected app | Reversible | Preserves app data where supported | Microsoft Store troubleshooting guidance |
| Reset | One affected app | Not fully reversible | Clears app data and can require a new sign-in | Microsoft Store troubleshooting guidance |
| Gaming Services Repair Tool | Underlying Gaming Services component | Generally reversible | May request a restart | Xbox installation and moderator guidance |
| Credential cleanup | Xbox/Store sign-in tokens | Reversible after signing in again | Signs you out and removes saved credentials | Targeted moderator suggestion for loading/sign-in cases |
| Reinstall | App package, or game files if necessary | Last-resort change | Download time and possible loss of local app state | Microsoft Store escalation sequence |
How do I update Windows, Xbox and Microsoft Store?
Updates replace incompatible components before you alter permissions or delete data.
- Restart Windows. This closes stalled installer processes and applies pending servicing operations.
- Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart if Windows requests it.
- Open Microsoft Store, choose Library, and select Get updates. Allow Store, Xbox and Gaming Services updates to finish.
- Reopen the Xbox app and try the game installation or update again.
Microsoft places closing and reopening, Windows updates, Store updates, game troubleshooting, repair/reset and reinstall in this general escalation sequence for Store apps. If the exact error returns, continue rather than repeatedly clicking Install.

How do I reset the Microsoft Store cache?
The Store cache reset refreshes Store connectivity and registration without removing installed apps.
- Close the Xbox app, Microsoft Store and any game installer window.
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait while the blank command window completes. Microsoft Store should reopen automatically.
- Sign in if prompted, then retry the installation from the Xbox app.
Do not terminate the process just because the window appears inactive; let it finish and reopen the Store.
How do I repair or reset Xbox, Microsoft Store and the affected game?
Repair the apps first. Reset is a stronger action that clears app data, so use it only after testing repair.
Repair each relevant app
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, select its three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair.
- Repeat for Microsoft Store and, if it is listed, the affected game.
- Restart the Xbox app and test the same install path.
Reset only when repair fails
Return to the same Advanced options page and select Reset for the app that still fails. Reset clears that app’s stored data and may require you to sign in again; it does not automatically mean every installed game must be downloaded again. Test after each reset so you know which component changed the result.
How do I run the Gaming Services Repair Tool?
Gaming Services is the Windows component Xbox uses for many PC Game Pass installs. The Xbox app includes a repair workflow specifically for failures involving that component.
- Open the Xbox app and select your profile menu.
- Choose Support.
- Select Gaming Services Repair Tool.
- Follow the prompts, allowing the tool to repair the component and restart Windows when requested.
- After restarting, sign in again if necessary and retry the game.
If the tool reports that it cannot complete, note the message for support. Do not replace Gaming Services with unverified scripts from forums; the supported repair path is safer and easier to undo.
Could the installation drive be denying access?
Yes. A drive can have free space yet still be unconfigured for Microsoft Store apps. Xbox installation guidance identifies an unprovisioned destination as a cause of denied installation access.

- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Advanced storage settings, then Where new content is saved (the label may appear as Change where new content is saved on some Windows builds).
- Check the drive selected for new apps and make sure it is the drive you intend to use.
- Confirm that it has enough free space for the game and its updates, not merely the initial download.
- If the Xbox app offers an installation-drive selector, test another properly configured drive. This is a diagnostic; it does not prove that the original drive is failing.
Avoid changing ownership or permissions on protected folders such as WindowsApps with scripts copied from forums. Those changes can break Store servicing and are not part of the documented first-line fix.
When should I try administrator approval?
Some games install additional components and may request administrator approval. If the dialog clearly identifies a write-permission failure, right-click the Xbox app and choose Run as administrator once, then retry. Return to the normal launch path afterward; permanently running every game or launcher with elevated rights is unnecessary and increases the impact of a compromised process.
Should I remove Xbox credentials from Windows Credential Manager?
Credential cleanup is an escalation for a specific symptom: Xbox remains stuck loading or sign-in fails after the standard updates, cache and repair steps. It is not a universal first fix for every 0x80070005 installation.
- Close Xbox, Microsoft Store and running games.
- Open Control Panel > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials.
- Remove entries beginning with or clearly containing
Xbl, plus credentials that are clearly tied to the affected Store/account sign-in. - Restart Windows, open the Store and Xbox app, and sign in again with the same account.
Removing these entries signs you out. Do not delete unrelated work, school, browser or network credentials.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen is reinstalling the app or game justified?
Reinstall only after updates, cache reset, repair/reset, Gaming Services repair and drive checks fail. Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting sequence puts reinstall later because it costs time and can remove local app state.
- Reinstall the Xbox or Microsoft Store app from Microsoft Store when that app itself remains damaged after reset.
- Reinstall the game when its package is damaged or the Store flow specifically requires it.
- After any interrupted restart or installation, reopen the game’s page and start the installation again; the Store may resume from a partial state.
Keep the account and subscription checks in place after reinstalling. A clean package cannot grant entitlement to an account that is signed out or no longer subscribed.
Does the KB5004327 Gaming Services script fix 0x80070005?
Not by default. Microsoft KB5004327 addresses 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F when Gaming Services will not install or start on Windows 10. Its PowerShell removal procedure and the KB5004476 resolution belong to that documented code and scenario, not to a generic 0x80070005 denial.

Escalate with evidence rather than repeating destructive steps. Contact Xbox or Microsoft Support and provide:
- The exact code, including whether it is
0x80070005or another value. - Whether the failure occurs during install, update or launch.
- Whether it occurs in Xbox, Microsoft Store, or both.
- Your Windows edition and version/build.
- Xbox and Gaming Services versions, if shown in their app settings.
- The target drive, available space and whether another configured drive was tested.
- The account/plan status and every step already attempted, including any reset, credential removal or reinstall.

Why does the download fail near 59 or 60 percent?
A percentage is only a progress indicator, not a diagnostic code. A failure at that point can occur when the installer changes from receiving compressed data to writing, registering or validating files, which is consistent with an access-clearance problem. Check the destination drive and app/service state instead of assuming the network dropped.
Will running wsreset.exe delete my installed games?
No. The Store-cache reset refreshes Store state and reopens the Store; it is not an uninstall command. You may need to sign in again if another later step resets an app, but the cache command itself is intended to leave installed apps in place.
Is an administrator account required for every Game Pass installation?
Not usually. Windows may request elevation for an additional component, but routinely changing folder ownership or permanently running the Xbox app elevated is not a supported general remedy. Approve a clearly identified prompt, then return to normal permissions.
What information should I capture before contacting support?
Take a screenshot showing the complete code and message, and note the time, game, app (Xbox or Store), Windows build, destination drive and available space. Also record whether the Gaming Services Repair Tool ran and whether repair, reset or credential cleanup changed the symptom; this prevents support from treating a different code or scenario as the same error.

Can I use the KB5004327 PowerShell procedure as a precaution?
No. That procedure targets different Gaming Services codes, 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F, in a defined Windows 10 case. Applying it to 0x80070005 without matching symptoms can remove components you still need and obscure the original cause.
