If Xbox Game Pass stops installing a game at about 59–60% and shows 0x80070005, work through Windows and Xbox’s supported repair sequence: restart the Xbox app and Microsoft Store, install Windows and Store updates, reset the Store cache, run the Gaming Services Repair Tool, repair or reset the affected apps, and then check permissions and the installation drive. The code usually points to a failure to obtain enough clearance to write files, but it is a symptom rather than a complete diagnosis.
Use the steps below in order. They apply to installations handled by the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, or Gaming Services on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Do not begin by deleting registry keys: Microsoft’s documented registry workaround targets different Gaming Services error codes and a specific older Windows 10 scenario.

What does Xbox Game Pass error 0x80070005 mean?
In this installation context, 0x80070005 commonly means that Windows or a related service cannot obtain the clearance it needs to write game files. Microsoft External Staff moderator Ian-Ng described it this way: “The code 0x80070005 often indicates that the system is seeking further clearance to write files.”
That wording identifies a likely class of causes, not a guaranteed root cause for every computer. A blocked or misdirected install path, a problem with Gaming Services, a damaged Store cache, an outdated app component, or a permissions conflict can all produce the same visible code. The point at which the install fails helps narrow the branch:

| What you observe | Most useful branch to try first |
|---|---|
| Every Microsoft Store or Xbox installation fails | Windows and Microsoft Store updates, then Store-cache reset and app repair |
| Only one Game Pass game fails | Repair the Xbox, Store, and Gaming Services components, then check that game’s install location |
| The error appears while files are being placed on a drive | Check the selected drive or folder and its write permissions; try another installation drive |
| The error appears when Gaming Services starts | Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool before considering any reinstall |
| Windows 10 and Windows 11 show different menus | Use the version-specific paths in the steps below |
There is no reliable prevalence figure for this code, so a percentage of affected PCs would be misleading. Treat the code as a troubleshooting signal and test the supported fixes in sequence.
How should I start troubleshooting 0x80070005?
Begin with the two apps involved in the transaction. A clean restart can release a background process that still holds an install file or service.
Recommended Free Tools
- Close the Xbox app and Microsoft Store completely. If either window is unresponsive, close it from the normal Windows interface and wait a few seconds.
- Open Microsoft Store again, then open Xbox again and retry the installation.
- If the same code returns, note whether it appears during download, file placement, or Gaming Services startup. That observation determines which later check deserves priority.
Microsoft lists closing and reopening the Store as its first Store-app check. Restarting the apps is low-risk and does not remove installed games.
How do I update Windows before retrying Game Pass?
Install all offered Windows updates before changing permissions or components. Updates can replace Store, Xbox, and Gaming Services dependencies that an installation requires.
- Windows 11: open Settings > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.
- Windows 10: open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates. Restart Windows if the update process requests it.
- After the restart, open Xbox and try the Game Pass installation again.
Keep the Windows-version distinction in mind when following help articles: the Windows 10 and Windows 11 Settings layouts are different even though the update check serves the same purpose.
How do I update Microsoft Store?
Refresh the Store itself before resetting its cache. An outdated Store package can interfere with authentication, licensing, or the handoff to Gaming Services.

- On older Windows 10 builds, the equivalent area may be labelled Downloads and updates; use that page and select the update command there.
- Close and reopen Microsoft Store after updates complete, then retry the Xbox installation.
If only one game fails after the Store update, continue with the Gaming Services and install-location checks rather than repeatedly downloading the same game.
How do I reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe?
The built-in wsreset.exe command clears the Microsoft Store cache without requiring a manual deletion of Store files. It is a supported next step when restarting and updating do not resolve the code.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - A blank command window appears. Wait for it to close on its own.
- Microsoft Store should reopen automatically. Once it does, close and reopen the Xbox app and retry the installation.
Do not interrupt the blank window while the reset is running. The command does not identify the root cause; it simply removes cached Store state that may be preventing a clean transaction.
How do I run the Gaming Services Repair Tool?
The Gaming Services Repair Tool is the official Xbox support path for repairing the Gaming Services component. Use it after Windows and Store updates and the cache reset, especially when the error appears as Gaming Services starts or when multiple Xbox installations fail.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Open the profile menu.
- Select Support.
- Choose Gaming Services Repair Tool.
- Follow the prompts shown by the tool and allow it to complete.
- Restart the Xbox app and test the affected Game Pass installation.
The exact prompts can vary with the Xbox app version. Let the repair finish before launching another installation so that the service and its packages are not being changed while Xbox is writing game files.
How do I repair or reset Xbox, Microsoft Store, and Gaming Services?
Windows app settings provide separate Repair and Reset actions where supported. Repair is the less disruptive choice; reset is a deeper cleanup that may remove an app’s local state and require you to sign in or configure it again.

Repair first
- Open Settings and go to the installed-app or apps-management page for your Windows version.
- Locate Xbox, open its advanced options, and select Repair if that button is available.
- Repeat the repair for Microsoft Store and Gaming Services when each component exposes the option.
- Reopen Xbox and retry the installation.
Reset only if repair does not help
- Return to the same advanced-options page for the component that still fails.
- Select Reset and confirm the prompt.
- Repeat for the other affected component only when necessary, then open Xbox and Microsoft Store again.
Microsoft’s general Store guidance treats repair, reset, and reinstall as progressively stronger branches. Do not reset every app immediately: changing one component at a time makes it easier to tell which action solved the failure and limits unnecessary sign-ins or settings changes.
How do I check write permissions and the Game Pass installation drive?
If the code appears while Xbox is placing files, inspect the destination rather than assuming the download itself is corrupt. The Microsoft response for this error suggests starting the Xbox app as administrator and, if needed, selecting another installation drive or folder in Xbox App Settings.
Retry with Xbox started as administrator
- Close Xbox.
- Open the Start menu, find Xbox, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Retry the installation once the app opens.
Administrator launch is a diagnostic and permission check, not a reason to run every application elevated permanently. If it changes the result, the original destination or account permissions deserve closer attention.
Choose another installation location
- In the Xbox app, open Settings or App settings, then go to Install Options.
- Review the selected installation drive or folder.
- Choose another available drive or folder that Xbox offers, apply the change, and retry the game installation.
If the install works on a different drive, the first destination is implicated even though the displayed code is the same. Keep track of which drive was selected and whether the error occurred during file placement; those details are useful if you need support.
When should I reinstall an app or Gaming Services?
Reinstall only the affected app or component after the supported update, cache, repair, reset, and location checks have failed. Microsoft’s Store guidance includes reinstalling an app from Library or My Library where that option is provided.
- Open Microsoft Store and go to Library (or My Library on an older Windows 10 interface).
- Find the affected app or component and choose its uninstall or reinstall option when Windows presents one.
- Let the reinstall complete, reopen Xbox, and retry the Game Pass installation.
Do not turn a reinstall into a registry-cleaning exercise. Removing unrelated packages or manually deleting service entries can leave the system in a less supported state.

Should I delete Gaming Services registry keys for 0x80070005?
No—not as a universal fix for this code. Microsoft Knowledge Base article KB5004327 describes removing Gaming Services packages and the GamingServices and GamingServicesNet service registry keys, restarting Windows, and reinstalling Gaming Services, but that article addresses Windows 10 Gaming Services errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F, not 0x80070005.
Those different codes and the article’s 2021 Windows 10 context matter. A registry-removal script designed for that scenario should be considered only when Microsoft or Xbox Support specifically directs it for your machine, not as the next step after an unrelated 0x80070005 message.
How can I choose the right troubleshooting branch?
Use the failure’s scope and timing to avoid repeating steps that cannot address it.
- All Store apps fail: prioritize Windows updates, Store updates,
wsreset.exe, and Store repair. - Only Xbox games fail: prioritize the Gaming Services Repair Tool, Xbox repair/reset, and the install-drive check.
- One game fails while others install: repair the shared components, then inspect that game’s selected destination and reinstall only the affected app if the supported UI offers it.
- The error changes after moving drives: record the original and replacement locations; the difference points toward a destination write or permissions problem.
- Windows 10 and Windows 11 show different labels: follow the version-specific Settings path rather than assuming a missing button means the feature is unavailable.
This branching approach separates Microsoft Store problems from Xbox-app and Gaming Services problems. It also prevents a code seen during file placement from being treated as proof that the game download itself is defective.
What should I do if 0x80070005 still appears?
Escalate to Xbox Support after you have completed the updates, Store refresh, cache reset, Gaming Services Repair Tool, app repair or reset, and permission or drive checks. Support can investigate account, service, or hardware details that the local app cannot expose.
Include a concise reproduction record:
- The exact code:
0x80070005. - Whether the install is being started from Xbox, Microsoft Store, or another supported Game Pass path.
- Where it stops, such as download, file placement, or Gaming Services startup.
- Your Windows version, either Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- The installation drive and whether trying another drive changed the result.
- Every step already attempted, including update,
wsreset.exe, repair-tool, repair/reset, and reinstall actions.
That information lets support distinguish a repeatable destination-permission problem from a service or account issue and avoids sending you through the same checks again.

Xbox Game Pass 0x80070005 FAQ
Is 0x80070005 the same as 0x80073D26?
No. They are separate error codes. The Microsoft KB5004327 procedure for removing Gaming Services packages and registry entries is documented for 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F in a Windows 10 context, so it should not be treated as a general 0x80070005 remedy.

The wsreset.exe cache reset is intended to refresh Store state, not uninstall games. App-level Reset is a stronger action that can clear local app data, so use it only after Repair and be prepared to sign in or configure the app again.
Why does the error appear at nearly the same percentage each time?
A repeatable stop during file placement can indicate that Xbox reaches the same destination or permission boundary each time. Compare the selected install drive and folder, then test another location; the result is more informative than the percentage alone.
Do I need to run Xbox as administrator every time?
No. Starting it with Run as administrator is a troubleshooting check for a possible write-clearance problem. If it works only when elevated, document that behavior and investigate the install destination or seek Xbox Support rather than relying on permanent elevation.
