- Confirm that you are working on the Windows PC where the Xbox app shows the error, not on an Xbox console.

Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting sequence places Windows updates and Store app updates before game-specific repairs. Complete both so the Xbox installer is working with current registration and account components.
- Open Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
- Select Library. In current Store layouts, this is where installed apps and available updates are listed.
- Select Get updates. Allow Store to update itself and any related Xbox or Gaming Services components that it lists.
- When the update process finishes, close Microsoft Store completely.
- Open the Xbox app and verify that you are signed in with the account that has access to the game or Game Pass title.

Repair the Xbox app first
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On some Windows builds the page is labeled Apps & features.
- Find Xbox in the list, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair. Wait for Windows to finish without closing Settings.
- Open Xbox, sign in if prompted, and retry the game installation.
Reset the Xbox app when repair changes nothing
- Return to the Xbox app’s Advanced options page.
- Select Reset and confirm the prompt.
- Launch Xbox again, sign in, and check whether the installation now proceeds.
Resetting the app does not uninstall Windows itself, but it can remove the app’s saved local settings and cached sign-in state. Have your Microsoft account credentials available before using it.

Apply the same process to Microsoft Store
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features).
- Locate Microsoft Store, open its three-dot menu, and select Advanced options.
- Choose Repair, then test the Xbox installation.
- If the failure remains, return to the page and choose Reset. Reopen Store, sign in, select Library > Get updates, and test again.
Use Repair and Reset on one app at a time. That order makes it clear which change affected the installer and avoids unnecessarily clearing both app caches at once.

- Run the tool and allow its checks to complete. It may install required Gaming Services updates.
- Follow any restart instruction shown by the tool.
- Open Xbox, verify the correct account, and retry the installation.

Should I reinstall the Xbox app or the game?
Reinstallation is a later software-level step, useful when the app registration or downloaded game files are damaged. It is more disruptive than changing a service setting or selecting Repair, so use it after those options.
Reinstall the Xbox app
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.

Windows Update cannot check for updates
Return to services.msc and confirm that Windows Update remains set to Automatic and shows Running. Apply the change, restart, and check again from Settings > Windows Update.
