If a game or app says “XINPUT1_4.dll was not found” or “The program can’t start because XINPUT1_4.dll is missing”, first check your Windows version. XInput 1.4 is a Windows component supplied with Windows 8 and later. On a supported installation, install pending Windows updates, then repair protected system files with DISM followed by System File Checker (SFC). Do not download a random DLL, rename another XInput file, or assume that a generic DirectX installer repairs this specific component.

What does the “XINPUT1_4.dll missing” error mean?
XINPUT1_4.dll is the Windows dynamic-link library that provides the XInput 1.4 controller-input API. XInput is a cross-platform API that has shipped for use on Xbox and Windows, according to Microsoft Learn. Programs that use XInput call functions in this library instead of implementing all controller communication themselves.
XInput 1.4 is an inbox Windows component on Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows 11. The version-1.4 API also includes XInputGetAudioDeviceIds, which can identify audio devices for a headset connected through a controller. That feature explains why an application may specifically request version 1.4, but plugging in a controller cannot restore a missing system file.

The message means the application could not load the version it requested from the Windows installation or from the location it searched. It does not, by itself, prove that Windows is infected, that the game is defective, or that every copy of the DLL is absent. A damaged protected file, an incomplete update, an unsupported Windows release, or an application built for a different XInput version can all lead to similar symptoms.
Does my Windows version include XInput 1.4?
Windows 8 and every later desktop release include XInput 1.4 as a system component. Windows Vista and Windows 7 do not provide that same inbox version; software for those systems normally uses XInput 9.1.0 or the legacy XInput 1.3 redistributable instead.
Check the version before changing files. Press Win+R, type winver, and press Enter. Record the Windows edition, version and OS build shown in the dialog. On Windows 10 or 11 you can also open Settings → System → About and read Windows specifications.

If winver shows Windows 7 or an older release, a program that explicitly requires XInput 1.4 may not be compatible with that operating system. Installing a file copied from another PC is not a supported way to change the platform API. Look for a game update, a compatibility statement from the developer, or an operating-system upgrade that the game supports.
How do I fix XINPUT1_4.dll on Windows 8, 10 or 11?
Use this order: install Windows updates, repair the component store with DISM, run SFC, restart, and then test the affected program. These tools are built into Windows and preserve the version relationships that a manually downloaded DLL can break.

1. Install all available Windows updates
- On Windows 11, open Settings → Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and allow feature, quality and servicing-stack updates to install.
- Restart whenever Windows requests it. Check again after the restart until the page reports that no further updates are available.
- Launch the game or application again. If the same message remains, continue with the repair commands below.
Windows Update supplies the latest DirectX version supported by Windows 10 and 11, but an update check is not the same thing as downloading a standalone DLL. Keep the distinction between the operating-system component and optional game runtimes.

- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command exactly, including the spaces:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthPress Enter and let the operation finish. It can appear to pause at a percentage while Windows services the component store; do not close the window merely because progress is slow. The command checks the running Windows image and repairs component-store corruption using files available to Windows servicing.
If DISM reports that the operation completed successfully, continue to SFC. If it returns an error, note the complete error number and text before trying another change. A DISM failure can indicate that Windows Update itself is not functioning, that required source files are unavailable, or that the command prompt was not elevated.
3. Run System File Checker after DISM
In the same administrator Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannowWait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC scans protected Windows files and can replace a corrupted copy with a cached version. Restart the computer after the scan, even if SFC says it found and repaired files, then test the game or application.

- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” SFC did not detect protected-file corruption. The application, its required XInput version, or another local dependency still needs diagnosis.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Restart and retry the program. The missing-file message may have been caused by the repaired component.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” Run DISM again, confirm that updates are working, restart, and repeat SFC once. Keep the exact result for later support rather than replacing files manually.
- “Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.” Restart and run SFC again from an administrator window. If it still fails, try the scan in Windows Safe Mode or use Microsoft’s documented SFC troubleshooting procedure; the exact Windows build and message are needed to choose the next repair source.
4. Restart and test the original program
After DISM and SFC complete, restart Windows before drawing a conclusion. Start the same game or application from its normal shortcut and reproduce the original action. If it opens, do not copy replacement DLLs into the game folder; the protected system component has been repaired in its intended location.
How can I check DirectX without confusing it with XInput?
Use Microsoft’s DirectX Diagnostic Tool to identify the DirectX version, but treat that result as separate evidence. Press Win+R, type dxdiag, press Enter, and read the DirectX Version field on the System tab. Save the information if a game developer asks for it.
Microsoft describes XInput 1.4 separately as a Windows component. Therefore, seeing a DirectX version in dxdiag does not prove that a named XINPUT1_4.dll file is healthy, and downloading a generic DirectX package is not established as the repair for this particular error. Windows Update, DISM and SFC are the supported first-line checks for a potentially damaged Windows component.
Why shouldn’t I download XINPUT1_4.dll from a DLL website?
A random DLL download may have an unknown origin, the wrong architecture, a modified export list, or a version intended for a different Windows release. Dropping it beside a game executable can also make that one program load a file that does not match the rest of the operating system. Renaming XInput1_3.dll or XInput9_1_0.dll to XINPUT1_4.dll does not add the missing API functions and can create new crashes.

What should I do if the error remains after DISM and SFC?
At that point, stop repeating generic DLL fixes and collect machine-specific details. The available documentation does not establish one universal cause or success rate for this message, so the exact program and Windows build matter.
Record the details support will need
- The complete error text, including capitalization and punctuation.
- The Windows edition, version and OS build from
winver. - The game or application name, version and installation source.
- Whether the message appears at launch, when opening a particular mode, or after an update.
- The final DISM and SFC result lines.
- Any application crash entry in Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application at the time of the failure.
Do not delete logs before recording the timestamp. If only one title fails while other XInput games work, the application’s own files, launcher update or compatibility requirements become more plausible than a system-wide missing component. Verify the title’s files using its official launcher or support instructions, but do not replace the Windows DLL with a third-party copy.
Consider the operating-system compatibility branch
On Windows 7 or Vista, an application that demands XInput 1.4 may simply target a newer platform. XInput 9.1.0 and XInput 1.3 have different distribution histories and capabilities; they are not alternate filenames for the same library. Check whether the developer offers a build for your Windows release or states that Windows 8 or later is required.

Check whether security software quarantined a protected file
If a security product reports that a Windows file was quarantined, use that product’s own event history and recovery process rather than downloading a replacement. A security scan result is separate from the XInput version question; an antivirus product complements Windows repair tools and should not be replaced by a DLL utility.
