How to Fix Your FPS Limit in Minecraft

Check Minecraft’s own frame-rate setting first, then test Java VSync, external caps, and platform limits. If FPS fluctuates instead of hitting a steady ceiling, troubleshoot performance too.

First, identify whether you play Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, and whether the frame rate is stuck at a steady ceiling or simply running low. A fixed ceiling often points to Minecraft’s frame-rate setting, synchronization, or a platform/display limit; fluctuating low FPS can also mean the game is struggling to render the current workload. Check Minecraft’s own limit first, then investigate controls outside the game.

1. Check Minecraft’s FPS setting

Use the controls for your edition and platform. Console and mobile settings do not necessarily match PC instructions, and options can vary by game version.

Java Edition on PC

  1. Open Minecraft and go to Options → Video Settings.

  2. Check Max Framerate. If it is set below the rate you want, raise it or select an uncapped option if your version offers one. An uncapped setting removes this particular in-game ceiling; it does not guarantee that your computer can render at a higher rate.

    • 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
  3. Check VSync. When enabled, it can synchronize rendered frames with your display’s refresh rate, making the rate appear capped. For diagnosis, you can temporarily turn it off and compare. NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.1 User Guide likewise recommends disabling V-Sync to test whether the frame rate is tied to monitor refresh. This is a troubleshooting test, not a recommendation that everyone should leave VSync off.

  4. Return to the same world and repeat the same activity to see whether the ceiling changed.

Java has also had a separate Reduce FPS when control for minimized or idle states. Mojang’s feature article dated August 15, 2024 describes a snapshot implementation that limited a minimized game to 10 FPS; in AFK mode it described 30 FPS after more than a minute without input, then 10 FPS after a further nine minutes, and 10 FPS while minimized. That feature is version-dependent; do not assume the control is present in every release. If FPS drops only while idle or minimized, check the settings available in your installed version.

Bedrock Edition

Check the video or graphics options available on your specific device for a frame-rate limit. Bedrock’s choices depend on platform and game version, so Java’s VSync instructions do not apply universally. If the option you expect is missing, consult the settings available for your platform rather than following a Java-only menu path.

2. Check caps outside Minecraft

If the in-game maximum is high enough but the same clean ceiling remains, check whether another setting is limiting output. Review any enabled frame-rate cap or synchronization setting in your graphics-driver software or other game utilities. Change one control at a time and retest so you can identify which one mattered.

A display’s refresh rate and Minecraft’s FPS are related but distinct. A display cannot show more refreshes per second than it supports, and VSync can couple rendered output to that refresh rate. But a higher-refresh display does not remove an in-game, driver, platform, or hardware limit. Consider a display upgrade only if you have established that display refresh is the bottleneck; match refresh rate, resolution, platform and connection compatibility, and budget to your needs.

3. Distinguish a cap from low performance

A steady, repeatable ceiling suggests a configured limit or synchronization; an FPS number by itself does not establish the cause. If the rate varies substantially, drops during demanding scenes, or remains low without a clear ceiling, treat it as a performance problem as well as checking the cap.

Java Edition performance checks

Mojang’s Java Edition system-requirements page lists a minimum target of 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings and a recommended target of 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings (published targets, 2026). These are not guarantees for every computer or world.

Bedrock Edition performance checks

  • Update the game and operating system; on Windows, also check for graphics-driver updates.

  • Check your device against Minecraft’s requirements and adjust video settings.

  • If updating does not solve the issue, temporarily turn off add-ons and retest, then adjust settings one at a time. Minecraft’s Bedrock graphics troubleshooting guidance recommends these kinds of checks.

4. Account for platform-specific limits

PC instructions cannot be assumed to apply to console or mobile. A reported PlayStation case is illustrative but not proof of a general platform rule: Mojang’s tracker entry MCPE-181377 describes a PS5 preview/release setup remaining at 60 FPS despite a setting above 60 and a 120 Hz mode. The issue is marked Cannot Reproduce, so it should not be treated as evidence that PS5 Minecraft is universally capped at 60. Check your own game version, platform settings, and display mode.

A quick way to isolate the cause

  1. Write down your edition, platform, approximate FPS, and whether it is fixed or fluctuating.

  2. Raise Minecraft’s own maximum if it is set below your target; in Java, test VSync separately.

  3. If the ceiling persists, inspect external frame caps and synchronization, then verify the display and platform’s supported modes.

  4. If FPS is still low or unstable, update software and drivers where applicable, reduce video workload, and temporarily disable mods or add-ons.

  5. Retest after each change. Keeping one variable changed at a time makes it easier to find the actual limit and restore settings that were not responsible.
