If a full-screen game or program will not respond, try to exit it normally first: press Esc or F11 if the application uses those keys, then press Alt+F4 to close the active window. If that fails, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and select End task. When the display is frozen or scrambled, reset the graphics driver with Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B and try again. Use taskkill when the process is identifiable but the graphical interface is unusable. Hold the power button only when Windows itself cannot be reached, because forced termination and hard shutdown can discard unsaved work.
What should I try before force-quitting a full-screen game?

If nothing happens, wait briefly and press the combination once more rather than repeatedly holding it. Repeated input can queue commands in a game that is recovering. If the desktop appears but the game remains running, use Task Manager to terminate the process.
How do I force-close a game with Task Manager?
Task Manager is the standard built-in method for terminating an unresponsive program. Microsoft describes its End task feature as a way to terminate unresponsive or resource-hogging processes.

- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. This shortcut opens Task Manager directly. - In the Processes view, locate the game or program under the app list.
- Select the entry once.
- Choose End task. If the window is maximized, use the keyboard to move through the list and controls, or resize Task Manager so its buttons are visible.
- Wait for the process to disappear before launching the game again.
Ending a process is different from closing a window normally. It stops the program without guaranteeing that unsaved settings, replay data, or recent progress will be written. Use it after Alt+F4 has failed or when the application is clearly not responding.
What if Task Manager opens but the game stays on top?
Use the security screen instead of fighting the full-screen window. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, select Task Manager, and then choose End task for the stuck program. This route can restore access when a game captures ordinary window focus.

End a process by executable name
Open a command prompt, identify the program’s executable name, and run:
taskkill /f /im app.exeReplace app.exe with the exact image name, such as the executable shown for the game in Task Manager. The /f switch requests forceful termination, so the application does not receive the normal close opportunity.
End a process by PID
If several instances use similar names, target the specific process ID:
taskkill /pid <processID>Replace <processID> with the numeric PID shown by Windows. A PID targets one running instance, which is safer than ending every process with a shared image name.
Include child processes
Some games start launchers, helper processes, or anti-cheat components. Add /t when the child processes must also end:

taskkill /f /t /im app.exeUse /t deliberately. It expands the command beyond the named process and can close related children that you did not intend to stop. If Windows reports that no matching process exists, verify the spelling and extension of the image name or obtain a fresh PID; processes can exit or restart while you are troubleshooting.
What if Ctrl+Alt+Del and Task Manager do not appear?
First determine whether the problem is the program or the display driver. A game that is still running may leave a black, flickering, or scrambled image even though Windows is accepting keyboard input.
- Press
Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. This resets the graphics driver and is intended for flickering or scrambled output. - Wait for the display to redraw, then retry
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - If Task Manager opens, end the game from the Processes view.
- If the display recovers but the game does not, use

The graphics-driver reset does not itself close the game; it only attempts to restore usable video output. Save work in any other visible application before ending processes if Windows gives you the opportunity.
When is holding the power button the only option?
Use a physical shutdown only when Windows is inaccessible and the software routes cannot be reached. Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance includes holding the power button for 10 seconds in basic steps and 20 seconds in advanced steps. This is an emergency procedure, not the normal way to close a game.

How can I tell whether the game or Windows is frozen?
Look for the narrowest failure. If the mouse moves, the clock changes, or another window responds, Windows is probably still running and Task Manager is the appropriate next step. If the screen is corrupted but keyboard indicators or other windows respond, reset the graphics driver before escalating.
If no window, shortcut, or security screen responds, treat it as a system-wide freeze. A power-button shutdown may be necessary, but it should remain the last resort because it interrupts every process rather than just the game.

If the same title repeatedly needs force-quitting, record whether the failure is limited to full-screen mode, follows a graphics-driver reset, or affects Windows generally; that distinction helps determine whether the next investigation belongs to the game, display driver, or operating system.
Does Windows 10 still receive support?
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft states that after that date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The shortcuts and commands above remain built-in Windows functions, but a recurring freeze on an unsupported installation may require planning a supported operating-system upgrade or an organization-approved support path.

Will Alt+F4 save my game automatically?
There is no universal guarantee. Alt+F4 sends a normal close request, but whether progress is saved depends on the game’s own exit and save behavior; a title that is already hung may not process the request at all.
What does a “process not found” message from taskkill mean?
Usually the image name or PID no longer matches a running process. Recheck the exact executable shown by Windows and obtain a current PID, because a game can close or restart while you are entering the command.
Can I recover progress after End task?
