Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, with digital preload due to begin at local midnight on November 12. Rockstar, Take-Two and Xbox have not published an official install-size or free-space requirement, so figures such as 200GB, 250GB or 300GB are estimates rather than requirements. The reliable way to prepare is to check your console now, remove or archive large games you can reinstall, and use the correct expandable storage for your system.
A boxed copy will not avoid the download: Rockstar says the physical edition contains a download code and no disc. It therefore needs the same internal storage as a digital purchase.

What is confirmed about GTA 6 storage
GTA 6 is confirmed for the current PlayStation and Xbox consoles only: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Rockstar Games Customer Support lists pre-orders for those platforms in an article updated August 18, 2026. Take-Two’s release information gives November 19, 2026 as the launch date, while Rockstar’s platform information says digital preload starts at local midnight on November 12.
None of those official materials states how many gigabytes the game will occupy, how much free space the installer will require, or whether a day-one update will add to the initial download. The Xbox listing available for the game likewise does not expose an install-size figure. Do not treat social-media claims of 200GB, 250GB or 300GB as a specification. Check the official store listing and the preload screen when Rockstar publishes the final package size.

Because the physical package is a code, buying it does not reduce the storage work. You still need enough free space for the downloaded game and any update delivered during preload or launch.
Check free space before deleting anything
Start by recording your current free capacity and identifying the largest games, add-ons, captures and applications. Keep saved data separate from the game installation in your planning: deleting a game is reversible, while deleting the wrong saved data or capture is not.
On PS5
- From the home screen, open Settings > Storage. PlayStation Support documents this path for checking available space.
- Open Console Storage > Games and Apps. Review the list and sort or inspect the largest entries first.
- Open Media Gallery separately to see whether screenshots and video clips are consuming substantial capacity.
- If you use PlayStation Plus, verify that the saved data you care about has synchronized to cloud storage before removing a game. You can also copy supported PS4 saves and captures to USB storage.
Deleting a purchased PS5 game does not remove your entitlement. Sony says deleted games and applications remain available to download again from your game library, although reinstalling later will require the download time and bandwidth.
On Xbox Series X|S
The current Xbox dashboard presents storage cleanup through My games & apps > Manage > Free up space. Dashboard labels can change with system updates, so follow the equivalent storage-management option shown on your console if the wording differs. Note the installed size of large games before removing them and confirm that cloud synchronization has completed for games that use Xbox cloud saves.

Delete games you can redownload
In Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, select titles you no longer play, then choose Delete. Prioritize games with large optional texture packs, language packs or completed campaigns. Your purchase remains in the library; only the local installation is removed.

Remove individual add-ons with Customize
Some PS5 games show a Customize option in the Games and Apps list. Use it to remove an unused expansion, language pack or other install component while retaining the base game. The available components vary by title, so read the item names before confirming. This is useful when a single add-on is occupying tens of gigabytes but you still want to keep the core game installed.
Move PS5 games to USB extended storage
A SuperSpeed USB extended-storage drive is an archive and transfer location for PS5 games. In the Games and Apps screen, select a game, press the options button, choose Move to USB Extended Storage (or the equivalent move command), and wait for the transfer to finish. Sony lists 250GB as the minimum capacity and 8TB as the maximum for this PS5 USB category.

There is an important limitation: a PS5 game stored on USB cannot be launched from that drive. To play it, move it back to console storage or to a compatible M.2 SSD. PS4 games are different; Sony allows compatible PS4 games to run directly from USB extended storage. USB is therefore useful for parking games you want to keep, not as a universal way to add playable PS5 capacity.
Clear captures and clips
Open the Media Gallery and remove duplicate screenshots, long clips and recordings you have already backed up. Captures are independent of game installations, so deleting a large video can free space without touching a game. Copy anything you want to retain to a USB device before deleting it.
Add playable PS5 capacity with an M.2 SSD
For a permanent increase that can run PS5 games directly, install a compatible M.2 SSD in the console’s expansion bay. Sony documents direct playback of both PS5 and PS4 games from the high-speed M.2 expansion and lists support for capacities up to 8TB.

Check compatibility before purchasing
- Search specifically for a 2TB M.2 SSD for PS5, not a generic NVMe drive.
- Confirm the interface, sequential-read performance, physical dimensions and thickness limits required by Sony’s current PS5 specification.
- Confirm that a heatsink is included or can be fitted within the permitted dimensions. A drive that is electrically compatible but physically too tall will not fit correctly.
- Check the retailer’s return policy and the exact model number. Product families often contain several revisions with different controllers or heatsinks.
Install and format it
Turn the console off, disconnect it, remove the expansion-cover panel and install the SSD according to the current PlayStation hardware instructions. Refit the cover before powering on. The PS5 will prompt you to format a newly detected drive; formatting erases that drive, so do not use one containing files you need. After formatting, choose the M.2 location when moving or installing games.

Free space on Xbox Series X|S
Use the dashboard cleanup screen
- Open My games & apps.
- Select Manage, then Free up space.
- Review large installed games, unused add-ons and duplicate or obsolete content.
- Delete titles you can reinstall, or select the move/copy option when you want to archive them on another drive.
Microsoft can change menu wording through dashboard updates, so verify the labels displayed on your system. The objective is to remove local installations while preserving cloud-synchronized saves and your digital entitlements.
Archive Series games on USB
A USB hard drive or SSD can consolidate Xbox games and downloadable content and free the internal drive. Manufacturer documentation for Xbox-compatible Game Drive products identifies Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S support and describes moving games for storage and transfer.
Current-generation Series X|S games generally need internal-speed storage or a compatible expansion card to run. Treat USB as an archive unless the individual game’s storage requirements explicitly say it can launch from USB. After archiving, move the game back to the internal drive or an approved expansion card before playing.

Use a Series X|S storage expansion card for direct play
An Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card is designed to provide the high-speed storage expected by Series games. Select a card explicitly specified for Series X|S, verify its capacity and model, and keep the receipt and return option until you have tested it in your console. A card intended only for older Xbox systems or a generic USB drive is not an equivalent substitute for Series-optimized playable storage.

Prices and retailer availability vary by country and date. No reliable price was established for these options, so capacity, compatibility and whether the drive is playable or archive-only should decide your purchase.

There is no evidence-based yes-or-no answer until Rockstar publishes the package size. The consoles have different usable capacities after system software occupies part of the internal drive, and the Series S has less internal storage than the Series X. That makes a storage check more useful than repeating an unverified game-size rumor.
On November 12, look at the game’s official store page and the preload dialog. Record both the download size and the free-space requirement shown by your console. Installers can request more temporary working space than the final installed footprint, so follow the number on the console rather than calculating from a rumor or from another game’s size.

- Check free space on November 11 using the PS5 Storage screen or the Xbox Manage storage screen.
- Finish cloud synchronization for saved games and back up captures you want to keep.
- Delete or archive the largest titles first. On PS5, use Customize to remove optional components where available.
- If you are using an archive drive, begin moving games early; a large transfer can take considerably longer than deleting a game.
- Start the GTA 6 preload after it becomes available at your local midnight on November 12.
- If the console reports insufficient space, use the exact required amount shown in the preload prompt and repeat the cleanup rather than relying on an online estimate.
- Leave enough time for any update delivered before the November 19 launch.
Common problems and fixes
The free-space number does not improve after deleting a game
Confirm that the deletion finished and that you removed the installation from the correct storage location. On PS5, check both Console Storage and any M.2 location; on Xbox, inspect internal and expansion storage separately. Restarting the console can refresh the displayed capacity after a large operation.

A PS5 game on USB will not start
This is expected for PS5 titles. Move the game from USB Extended Storage to Console Storage or the M.2 SSD, then launch it from the Games home. A compatible PS4 game may run directly from USB, but that rule does not apply to PS5 games.
The expansion drive is not recognized
Check the cable, port and format requirements, then verify that the drive meets Sony’s PS5 USB capacity range or that the M.2 SSD meets every current interface, speed, dimension and heatsink requirement. For Xbox, confirm that the card or drive is explicitly specified for Series X|S. Do not format a drive until you have copied off files you need.
You deleted a game and cannot find it
Open your PlayStation game library or Xbox owned-games list and reinstall it from the account that purchased it. Deleting the local installation does not cancel the purchase; it only removes the files stored on the console.

Prepare by measuring your console’s real free space, removing or archiving games you can redownload, and waiting for the official preload size instead of trusting a 200GB, 250GB or 300GB rumor. A PS5 M.2 SSD and an Xbox Series X|S expansion card provide directly playable extra capacity; USB drives are primarily for archiving and transfers, with PS5 games required to move back before play. Because the boxed edition is also a download code, every GTA 6 owner needs the same storage plan.
