If a new Nintendo Switch eShop game will not fit, start at HOME > Settings > Data Management. Check both the console’s system memory and the inserted microSD card, then recover space by organizing software you are not playing, moving software between storage locations, and clearing screenshots or videos. If the library regularly outgrows the console, add a compatible microSDXC card rather than formatting the card or deleting save data.
Organizing downloaded software removes its installed game data but keeps the save data and software icon, so you can download the title again later. Save data itself stays in console storage; a microSD card is for downloaded software, additional content, update data and captures.

Check which storage is full
The Switch reports console and microSD capacity separately. Open HOME > Settings > Data Management and inspect the free-space indicators for both locations. This first check determines whether you need to remove installed software, clear captures, move data, or expand the card.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A card can have room while the console is nearly full, or the reverse. Treat the two indicators as separate pools: moving software can rebalance them, but it does not create space that is already occupied by save data on the console.

Check before buying or downloading
eShop installation needs sufficient free space on the console or microSD card. Nintendo also warns that update data and other data may require additional capacity. Check the available space before purchasing or starting a download instead of relying only on the initial download requirement shown in the store.
Nintendo does not publish a universal “leave this many gigabytes free” rule. Keep enough room for the title and any later update data, and recheck the indicators when a download or update reports insufficient space.
Recover space without losing your saves
Organize software you are not playing
Nintendo’s software-data organization option removes the downloaded game data while retaining the save data and the software icon in your library. It is the safest first choice for a large game you want to keep associated with the console but do not need installed today.

- Choose the software-data organization control and select a title you can reinstall later.
- Confirm the operation and return to the HOME menu. The icon remains, while the installed download data is removed.
- When you want to play again, select the title and download it again with the Nintendo Account that purchased it.
Organization does not erase the save data, so your local progress remains available when the game is installed again. It also avoids rebuilding your HOME layout from memory because the software icon stays in place.
Move software between system memory and microSD
With a microSD card inserted, use HOME > Settings > Data Management > Move Data Between System/microSD. Select the direction, then select the software to move. This is useful when one storage location has room and the other is full.
- Insert a compatible microSD card if one is not already installed.
- Open the move-data screen using the path above.
- Choose system storage to microSD, or microSD to system storage.
- Select the software and confirm the transfer.
- After completion, check both free-space indicators again before starting the eShop download.
Nintendo notes that save data and some update data cannot be moved. A transfer therefore changes where eligible downloaded software is stored; it does not relocate saves to the card or guarantee that every associated data item will move.
Clear screenshots and videos
Captures can consume space independently of installed games. In Album, delete one screenshot or video, select several items for a batch deletion, or remove all captures through the available management controls.

- For a larger cleanup, open the Manage Screenshots and Videos screen in Data Management.
- Copy anything you want to keep to a microSD card, computer or phone.
- Delete the transferred or unwanted captures and verify the newly available space.
Copying before deletion is the practical safeguard for clips or screenshots that are not backed up elsewhere. Captures on a microSD card can be managed separately from captures in console storage.
Choose a compatible Nintendo Switch microSD card
Nintendo supports microSD cards for downloaded software, additional content, update data and screenshots or videos. The supported classes and capacities are:
| Card type | Supported capacity | Switch storage use |
|---|---|---|
| microSD | Up to 2GB | Downloaded software and captures |
| microSDHC | 4GB–32GB | Downloaded software and captures |
| microSDXC | 64GB–2TB | Downloaded software, additional content, update data and captures |
For a new expansion card, Nintendo recommends a UHS-I card with a read speed of 60–95MB/s. Compatibility is more important than choosing a card based only on a larger advertised number: use a supported microSDXC capacity and the recommended UHS-I class for the Switch use case.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Capacity decisions
Choose capacity according to the size of the installed library, how often you rotate games, and how many captures you retain. A smaller supported card can work if you regularly organize games, while a larger card reduces how often you need to move or organize software.
- Occasional downloads: use the card size that covers the titles you keep installed and leave room for updates.
- Large rotating library: favor a higher-capacity microSDXC card so fewer games need to be organized and redownloaded.
- Capture-heavy use: account for screenshots and videos as well as software; copy older captures elsewhere before they crowd out game data.
- Save-data protection: remember that increasing card capacity does not move saves. Save data remains in console storage.
Do not treat the 2TB upper limit as a recommendation to buy the largest possible card. The useful choice is the supported capacity that matches your library and your willingness to manage captures and archived software.
Understand what can be downloaded again
Nintendo says organized or deleted downloaded software and DLC can be downloaded again with the Nintendo Account that purchased them, as long as the title is still available for redownload and that account remains linked.
Before organizing a title, make sure you know which Nintendo Account obtained it. If a family uses more than one account, the account that made the purchase is the one relevant to the redownload entitlement. A title that is no longer available for redownload is a different risk from a title that was merely removed to reclaim space.

The software icon remaining after organization is a library shortcut, not proof that the game data is still installed. Starting the game again may require a complete download and any applicable update data, so allow time and free space for that process.

A practical cleanup order
Use this order when a new eShop title is waiting and you want the lowest-risk recovery first:
- Measure both locations. Go to HOME > Settings > Data Management and note which storage is short.
- Remove captures you no longer need. Copy important items to a microSD card, computer or phone before deleting them.
- Organize an inactive game. This removes its downloaded data while preserving the save and icon.
- Move eligible software. Use Move Data Between System/microSD when the card has room and the console does not, or vice versa.
- Recheck free space. Confirm that the destination has enough capacity for the new game and possible updates.
- Expand storage if this repeats. Add a supported microSDXC UHS-I card rather than repeatedly removing games you expect to reinstall soon.
This sequence separates reversible library management from permanent capture deletion and avoids using a destructive card format as a first response.
What each cleanup choice changes
It helps to distinguish installed software, save data, updates, downloadable content and captures before choosing an action. Organizing a game removes the downloaded software data but keeps its save and icon. Moving software changes the storage location for eligible data, but Nintendo says saves and some update data cannot move. Deleting captures affects only the selected screenshots or videos. Adding a card increases the place available for software and captures, not for saves.
That distinction explains why one operation may not solve the entire shortage. For example, moving a game off system storage can leave the console indicator higher than expected if save data and non-movable update data remain there. Conversely, deleting every capture will not make room on a full microSD card if the card is occupied mainly by installed games. Check the indicators again after each operation rather than judging by the number of items removed.
How to plan a move or organization safely
- Identify the title and account. Confirm which game is inactive and which Nintendo Account purchased it, especially on a shared console.
- Review captures first. If you are unsure whether a clip matters, copy it to a computer, phone or another card before deleting it.
- Choose reversible actions. Organizing software is preferable to destructive card formatting because the icon and save remain available.
- Use the destination indicator. A move only helps if the destination has enough room for the eligible software data.
- Allow for updates. Leave practical headroom beyond the advertised download requirement because later update data may need additional capacity.
- Verify afterward. Return to Data Management and inspect both storage pools before beginning the new eShop download.
If a title is organized, do not interpret its remaining HOME icon as installed data. Selecting it later starts the redownload process, which again requires enough space on the console or card and may be followed by an update.
What not to do when space is tight
Do not format the microSD card as routine cleanup
Formatting erases the card’s software data and captures. It is not an ordinary way to remove one game or a few videos. Use software organization, moving controls and capture management first so that you can target the data responsible for the shortage.
Do not expect a microSD card to hold saves
Save data cannot be stored on a microSD card. Replacing or enlarging the card does not provide a save-data backup location, and moving installed software does not move the associated save.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume an eShop purchase needs only its initial download space
Updates and other data may require additional capacity. If the free-space indicator is close to the requirement, organize another title or clear captures before starting the purchase or download rather than waiting for an update to fail.

Do not select a card solely by its advertised capacity
A card must fit the Switch’s supported type and use case. Nintendo lists microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC ranges and recommends UHS-I read speeds of 60–95MB/s. A larger number on packaging is not a substitute for checking compatibility.
Troubleshooting common storage situations
The console is full but the microSD card has room
Open the move-data screen and move eligible software from system storage to the card. If the shortage remains, organize an inactive title or clear captures stored in console memory. Save data will continue to occupy console storage because it cannot be moved to the card.
The microSD card is full but system storage has room
Move eligible software from the card to system storage, organize a game you are not using, or delete copied captures from the card. If the card fills repeatedly, choose a higher-capacity supported microSDXC card.

Organization removes the downloaded game data while leaving the icon and save data. Select the icon and redownload the software with the purchasing Nintendo Account, provided the title remains available for redownload.
A move operation does not free as much space as expected
Nintendo says save data and some update data cannot be moved. Check both storage indicators after the transfer, then use software organization or capture management for the remaining space requirement.
The card contains captures you want to keep
Use Manage Screenshots and Videos to copy them to a computer, phone or another microSD card before deleting them. Verify the copied files before removing the originals.
A newly purchased card does not solve the immediate download
First verify that the Switch recognizes the inserted card and that Data Management shows its free space. The card still cannot hold save data, and the eShop may need additional room for update data. Move eligible software or organize an inactive title if the available card space is not yet sufficient.
Storage choices compared
| Option | What it frees | What remains | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organize software | Downloaded game data | Save data and software icon | Archive a game you may redownload |
| Move software | Space in the source location | Saves and some update data stay put | Balance system and card storage |
| Delete captures | Selected screenshots and videos | Unselected captures and software | Quick cleanup after copying valued media |
| Add microSDXC | Creates more card capacity | Save data remains in console storage | Maintain a larger installed library |
| Format card | All card software data and captures | Nothing on the formatted card | Only an intentional full erase, not routine cleanup |
Before installing the next eShop game
- Confirm free space in both console storage and the inserted microSD card.
- Identify whether the available space is in the location the software can use.
- Leave practical room for update data because Nintendo warns that additional capacity may be required.
- Check that the Nintendo Account that purchased any organized software remains linked for redownload.
- Use a supported card type; for current expansion, microSDXC cards from 64GB to 2TB are supported.
- Prefer Nintendo’s recommended UHS-I read-speed range of 60–95MB/s.
- Copy valuable screenshots and videos before deleting them.
- Avoid formatting unless you intentionally want to erase all software data and captures on the card.
For most one-time shortages, organizing one inactive game and clearing captures is enough. If storage pressure returns after every few downloads, a compatible microSDXC card plus the same Data Management checks provides a repeatable way to keep new eShop games installable without sacrificing save data.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check free space on a Nintendo Switch?
Open HOME > Settings > Data Management. Check the separate indicators for console system memory and the inserted microSD card; either one may be the limiting storage pool.
Can I delete a Switch game without losing my save?
Use Nintendo’s software-data organization option. It removes downloaded game data while retaining the save data and software icon. The title can be downloaded again with the Nintendo Account that purchased it, provided it remains available for redownload.
Can Nintendo Switch save data be moved to a microSD card?
No. Save data remains in console storage. A microSD card can store downloaded software, additional content, update data and screenshots or videos, but not saves.
How do I move a Switch game to an SD card?
Insert a compatible card, then open HOME > Settings > Data Management > Move Data Between System/microSD. Choose the direction, select eligible software and confirm. Save data and some update data cannot be moved.
What microSD card works with Nintendo Switch?
Nintendo supports microSD cards up to 2GB, microSDHC cards from 4GB to 32GB, and microSDXC cards from 64GB to 2TB. For expansion, Nintendo recommends UHS-I cards with 60–95MB/s read speed.
Do Switch eShop updates need extra storage?
They can. Nintendo says sufficient space is required on system storage or microSD and warns that updates and other data may require additional capacity. Check Data Management before buying or downloading.
How can I free space used by screenshots and videos?
Delete individual items or batches in Album, or open Settings > Data Management > Manage Screenshots and Videos. Copy captures to a microSD card, computer or phone first if you want to keep them.
What happens if I format my Switch microSD card?
Formatting erases the card’s software data and captures. It is not a targeted cleanup method; organize software, move eligible data or manage captures first unless you intentionally want a full erase.
Why is there still not enough console space after moving a game?
Nintendo says save data and some update data cannot be moved, so those items may remain in system storage. Recheck both indicators, then organize another title or clear console captures.
Can I redownload a game or DLC after organizing or deleting it?
Nintendo says organized or deleted downloaded software and DLC can be downloaded again with the purchasing Nintendo Account while the title remains available for redownload and that account stays linked.
The Bottom Line
Start at HOME > Settings > Data Management, identify which storage pool is full, then clear captures, organize an inactive game or move eligible software. Use a supported microSDXC card—64GB to 2TB, with Nintendo’s recommended UHS-I 60–95MB/s read speed—when you need lasting expansion. Saves stay in console storage, and formatting the card erases its software data and captures.
