Short answer: Custom Ball Online has legacy instructions for installing ball textures through BakkesMod, but it is not a working method for current Rocket League versions released on or after April 28, 2026. BakkesMod’s maintainer announced that the mod would not work with those versions. The plugin describes its effect as client-side, so do not expect other players to see your custom ball.
Does BakkesMod work with the current Rocket League version?
No, according to BakkesMod maintainer Bakkes. In an April 28, 2026 announcement, Bakkes said: “This means that BakkesMod will not work on game versions released on April 28th and later.” The announcement cites EAC. Since Rocket League versions released on or after that date fall under the stated cutoff, the custom-ball plugin instructions below apply only to an older compatible game and BakkesMod setup—not the current version. The maintainer said older BakkesMod versions would remain available for earlier Rocket League versions. That does not establish that a particular older game build, BakkesMod build, or plugin release is currently available or compatible; check the plugin’s release documentation before attempting the legacy setup.
Legacy setup: install Custom Ball Online
The plugin author’s README describes Custom Ball Online as “Client-side ball customization for Rocket League.” Its documented workflow is to install the plugin, put texture files in its data folder, select a skin, and join a match. These are the author’s instructions, not independently verified steps, and they do not override the post-April 28, 2026 compatibility cutoff.

- Check your game version. If it was released on or after April 28, 2026, BakkesMod will not work according to its maintainer; stop here rather than troubleshooting the plugin.
- Install the plugin for an older compatible setup. Extract
CustomBallOnline.zipand runinstall.bat. The README refers users to the latest release, but compatibility with any specific release is not established here. - Place the skin files in the plugin folder. Use
%LOCALAPPDATA%bakkesmodbakkesmoddataCustomBallOnlineBallTextures. - Select a skin and join a match. The README says the selected skin should apply automatically.
- Use the manual apply command if needed. In the BakkesMod console, opened with F6, enter
cbo_apply_ball_skin. The project also lists commands to clear cached textures, but its ordinary setup does not require them.

Will opponents see the custom ball?
The project identifies the feature as client-side customization. The available documentation does not establish that the texture is sent to or displayed for other players, so treat it as a local visual change rather than a shared cosmetic.

If you mean moving the ball for practice
Rocket League’s built-in Free Play controls can reposition or direct the standard ball; they do not install a custom appearance. The available actions include Take Possession, which puts the ball in front of your car; Start Dribble, which places it on the hood; Pass Ball, which sends it toward the car; Launch Ball, similar to a Hoops tip-off; and Defend Shot, which sends it toward the nearest goal. The official v2.66 patch notes, dated March 10, 2026, also document Custom Training randomization for initial ball speed, location, and height. These settings change training scenarios, not ball appearance.
