Complete The Unquiet Dead at Goldenhills Plantation, east of Rorikstead. Investigate the farmhouse, find Rin’s toy sword near the well, and return it to the house. Finishing the quest awards the plantation key and ownership.
Where to find Goldenhills Plantation
Travel to Rorikstead and head east to Goldenhills Plantation. Bethesda identifies investigating the plantation as the start of The Unquiet Dead quest in its Anniversary Edition announcement.
How to complete The Unquiet Dead
- Investigate the farmhouse. Deal with the hostile ghost, then read the note and journals inside. The walkthrough describes a hidden basement room opened with a button near the entrance; search it for the journals that explain the family’s story. PC Gamer’s walkthrough details this sequence.
- Find Rin’s toy sword. Search outside near the well and the row of unusual trees, by the child’s remains. The quest reference identifies the sword as the item to recover. UESP’s quest entry describes the objective.
- Return the sword to the farmhouse. Place it on the dresser indicated by the quest. The family ghosts appear, and you receive the Goldenhills Plantation key, which grants ownership. UESP’s Goldenhills Plantation entry lists the reward.
Save before starting the quest. PC Gamer reports that its progression can bug, but does not specify affected platforms or versions, so this is a precaution rather than evidence that the quest routinely fails.
Why this is the free-house route in Anniversary Edition
Goldenhills Plantation is both a player home and a farming property, and its ownership comes from completing the quest rather than buying the property. Bethesda’s 2021 Anniversary Edition announcement describes Farming as a new Creation Club addition and says the quest begins at Goldenhills Plantation.
#1 Best Overall
Do not confuse this with Hearthfire, which uses a separate purchase-and-build route: Bethesda describes buying land and constructing a home in its Skyrim product information. Bethesda also lists Tundra Homestead among the Anniversary Edition Upgrade content, but that listing does not establish its in-game price or acquisition conditions. It is not the quest-reward answer to how to get a free house.
