To get the biggest house in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, ask Tom Nook to expand your home, pay off the current home loan, then return to him to request the next expansion. Repeat until you have six interior spaces: an enlarged main room, three additional ground-floor rooms, an upstairs room and a basement.
How to upgrade your house all the way

Go to Resident Services and speak with Tom Nook about expanding your home.

After the expansion, pay off the home loan associated with that upgrade.

Return to Tom Nook and ask for the next expansion. Repeat the loan-and-request cycle until you reach the final layout.

The upgrades are progressive and loan-gated: paying off a loan lets you request the next expansion, but does not automatically start it.
What the fully expanded house includes
The completed house has six interior spaces: the enlarged main room, three additional rooms on the ground floor, one upstairs room and one basement. The main room is the only room that increases in size; the other added rooms have fixed dimensions, according to the house layout reference.

House size and storage are different
More rooms do not mean more item storage. Nintendo UK says the earlier home-storage capacity of 5,000 items can be raised by two further upgrades at Resident Services, for a maximum of 9,000 items. Nintendo also says storage can hold flowers, shrubs and trees. These are storage upgrades, separate from the room-expansion sequence. Nintendo UK’s game page gives the current capacity.
Nintendo Support records that version 3.0.0 became available on January 15, 2026. The current storage figure above reflects Nintendo’s post-update game information. Nintendo Support’s FAQ provides the update context.

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
Do you need Happy Home Paradise or amiibo?
No. Happy Home Paradise is a separate vacation-home design experience on an archipelago, not an upgrade tier for your main-island house. Nintendo describes it as available through separate purchase or an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Animal Crossing amiibo and amiibo cards can invite characters to become clients in that DLC, but they do not unlock extra rooms in your own home.
