SkyFactory 5 server requirements at a glance
SkyFactory 5 is a Forge modpack, so a normal vanilla Minecraft server jar is not enough. The server files, Forge libraries, scripts, configuration, and mods must come from the pack’s dedicated server download.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
Self-hosting on your own computer
Self-hosting gives you direct access to the world folder, configuration files, mods, scripts, logs, and backups. It can use a computer you already own, so there is no separate hosting subscription. You are also responsible for Java installation, Forge setup, firewall and router changes, updates, backups, crash recovery, and keeping the machine online whenever friends want to play.
#1 Best Overall
Using a managed host
A managed service can install a supported modpack and handle much of the panel, networking, and maintenance work. CurseForge’s documented hosted-server flow is: choose the modpack, choose a plan, select a region, enter server details, and pay. Supported packs with matching server files can be deployed without manual file uploads or port forwarding. Confirm that SkyFactory 5 version 5.0.8 (or the version your group uses), Forge, Java 17, backups, player limits, locations, and version controls are supported before paying. Prices and availability change.
Managed hosting reduces administration but gives you less direct control than a local installation. Read the plan’s backup, storage, support, cancellation, and world-download terms; those features are provider-specific.
Recommended Free Tools
Prepare the computer before installation
- Use a 64-bit operating system and install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime, not an older Java release or a 32-bit runtime.
- Create a dedicated folder for this server. Do not place it inside the client’s modpack folder or mix it with another Minecraft instance.
- Leave enough memory and CPU capacity for the operating system and any other applications. A server that receives all available RAM can make the computer unstable rather than faster.
- If the machine will be exposed to the internet, ensure you can administer its firewall and router and that you trust everyone who receives the address.
- Plan where you will keep backups. A second drive or another computer is safer than keeping the only copy beside the live world.
Verify Java from a terminal or command prompt with java -version. The output should identify Java 17 and a 64-bit runtime. If the command is missing or reports another major version, fix Java before running the pack’s installer.
Download the correct SkyFactory 5 server pack
- Open the SkyFactory 5 project on CurseForge and select its Files section.
- Locate the current release. For the version documented here, the separate download is
SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zipfor Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. - Download the server archive, not the regular client ZIP. The client archive is intended for launching the game and does not replace the server pack’s installation scripts and server files.
- Create a new, empty server folder and extract the entire archive there. Keep the supplied configuration, mods, scripts, installer files, and other folders together; do not drag only the visible mods into a different directory.
If the Files page shows a newer release, use its matching server filename, Minecraft version, loader, and Java requirement instead of mixing files from two releases. Never update only the client or only the server.
Install Forge and create the server files
The server pack includes an operating-system-specific Forge installer script. Run the script from the extracted folder so it can create the libraries and launch scripts in the locations expected by the pack.
- Close Minecraft and any other process that might be using the server folder.
- On Windows, run the included Windows installer or batch script. On Linux or macOS, run the included shell script using the OS’s terminal and follow any execute-permission prompt. Use the script supplied by the pack rather than downloading an unrelated Forge build.
- Wait for the installer to finish. A successful installation creates Forge libraries and the run scripts used to start the server. If it stops immediately, read the terminal output; a missing Java command, wrong Java major version, or permission problem is more useful to fix than repeatedly double-clicking the file.
- Review the generated JVM arguments and launch script before the first run. Keep the pack’s Forge and mod files intact while changing only settings you understand.
Run the generated server launch script once. The first start can take substantially longer because Forge and the mods create libraries, configuration, and world data. Do not interrupt it simply because the console appears idle.

- Stop the server only after the initial process has finished or clearly reports that it cannot continue.
- Open the generated

- Wait until the console reports that the server is ready before connecting. The first successful boot may create the world and additional configuration files.
Keep the console window available during this process. Forge errors, missing dependencies, Java errors, and rejected mod connections are recorded there. If the server creates a crash report, preserve it before trying another change.
Set memory without using the wrong benchmark
The SkyFactory 5 project page says, “Minimum recommended RAM allocation for clients is 6gb and Java 17 is required.” That 6 GB figure describes a client allocation. It is not a promise that every server needs exactly 6 GB, nor does it establish a maximum player count.
For the server, choose a heap size based on the number of simultaneous players, the size and activity of the world, chunk-loading machines, and what else runs on the computer. Start conservatively, observe the server during normal play, and increase the allocation only when logs or performance monitoring show memory pressure. Leave sufficient RAM for the operating system and other services.
- Use the pack’s generated JVM argument file or launch script rather than inventing a second startup command.
- Keep the minimum and maximum heap values consistent with the amount of physical RAM installed.
- Do not allocate every gigabyte to Java; the operating system, Forge native components, and other applications also need memory.
- Change one resource setting at a time and record the old value so you can revert after a failed boot.
Symptoms such as repeated out-of-memory errors, long pauses during garbage collection, or the operating system terminating Java indicate that the current allocation or workload needs attention. More RAM cannot repair a broken mod, an overloaded CPU, or a network problem.

Make the server reachable by friends
Playing on the same home network
Start the server and have each player connect using the host computer’s local network address shown by the operating system. This avoids exposing the server to the public internet, but every player still needs the identical SkyFactory release, Minecraft version, Forge loader, and client configuration.
Inviting players over the internet
Internet play requires the host computer’s firewall and the home router to allow the Minecraft server traffic to reach the machine running Forge. The exact screens differ by router and operating system, so create a rule for the server application or configured server port, forward that traffic to the host computer’s local address, and ensure the local address does not change unexpectedly.
- Give the host computer a stable local address through your router’s reservation feature or an equivalent network setting.
- Allow the Java/Forge server through the computer’s firewall when the operating system asks. Limit the rule to the server’s intended network scope where practical.
- Create the router’s port-forwarding rule to the host computer and confirm that the configured server port matches the value in the server properties.
- Have a friend outside your home network test the public address while the server is running. Testing only from inside the same network can produce misleading results because some routers do not support loopback connections.
- Share the address privately. Stop the server before changing its network configuration, and remove forwarding if you no longer intend to host publicly.
Some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound connections. In that situation, a normal port-forwarding rule may never work; use a managed host or a network arrangement that provides inbound connectivity instead of repeatedly changing Forge files.
Install the matching client and join
- Each player installs the SkyFactory 5 client through CurseForge.
- Select exactly the server’s release, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Forge combination. A client on a newer or older pack release can fail during handshake or load into a different mod environment.
- Launch the pack once so CurseForge and Minecraft finish creating the client instance.
- Open Minecraft’s Multiplayer screen, choose Add Server, enter a recognizable name, and enter the host’s local or public address.
- Connect only after the server console reports that it is ready. If the connection is rejected, compare the complete mod list and versions before changing network settings.
Do not copy a client’s saves, mods, or configuration over the server folder. The server pack already supplies the authoritative server-side files; a client’s settings can overwrite or omit files the server needs.

Troubleshoot the failures that occur most often
The installer does nothing or closes immediately
Run it from a terminal so the error remains visible. Check that java -version reports 64-bit Java 17, that the script is being run from the extracted server folder, and that your user account can write there. Re-extract the archive if files were blocked, quarantined, or partially copied.

The server says Java is unsupported
Remove older Java paths from the launch script or operating-system environment and point the pack to Java 17. Do not solve a Java-version error by downloading random Forge files; the Minecraft, Forge, and mod versions must remain the pack’s documented combination.
Players receive a mod-list or registry mismatch
Compare the server release and every client’s release first. Confirm Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge on both sides, then reinstall the exact client profile if necessary. Mixing a current client with an older server is not a supported upgrade path.
The server starts but friends cannot connect
Test locally first. If local players can join, inspect the firewall rule, router forwarding target, public address, and whether your internet connection permits inbound traffic. If nobody can join, read the server console for a failed Forge start, an incorrect configured port, or a world-generation error.
The world is slow or Java crashes
Check CPU, memory, and disk activity while several players are online. Reduce simultaneous heavy workloads, stop unrelated applications, and adjust the server heap gradually while retaining headroom for the operating system. Preserve logs and crash reports before deleting anything.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Backups, updates, and safe shutdowns
- Stop the server through its console command or the pack’s normal shutdown process. Killing Java can leave world data incomplete.
- Back up the world folder and the server’s configuration and scripts before changing mods, Forge, JVM arguments, or major pack versions.
- Keep at least one backup away from the live server machine and periodically verify that it can actually be restored.
- When updating, make a full backup, record the old pack version, install the new server pack in a separate folder, and test the copied world before inviting players.
- Update clients only after the server version is ready. Tell players which exact release to select in CurseForge.
Never overwrite a functioning installation while experimenting. A parallel test folder makes it possible to return to the last known-good server if a mod or configuration change prevents startup.
Best Value
When managed hosting is the better choice
Choose managed hosting when you do not want to maintain Java and Forge files, configure a firewall and router, keep a home computer online, or perform your own recovery. The provider’s panel may automate deployment and offer scheduled backups, but those features are not universal. Confirm them in the specific plan.
Choose self-hosting when filesystem access, custom configuration, local control, and avoiding a recurring fee matter more than convenience. In either case, insist on version controls that keep the server and clients on the same SkyFactory release.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run the regular SkyFactory 5 client ZIP as my server?
No. Use the separate SkyFactory server archive from the CurseForge Files page. The client archive is not a replacement for the Forge server installation.
Is 6 GB of RAM enough for every SkyFactory 5 server?
No universal server amount is established. The 6 GB statement on the project page is a minimum recommended client allocation; server memory depends on players, world activity, and the host computer.
Why must everyone use the same pack version?
Forge validates the mod and registry data during connection. Different SkyFactory, Minecraft, or Forge versions can produce a handshake or registry mismatch.
