Meteorites in Pokémon GO have been awarded through limited-time research, not a confirmed permanent source. The latest documented offer was Ozone Ascent on July 25–26, 2026; its free and paid research rewards expired at 8 p.m. local time on July 26. To see whether a new offer is available now, check the in-game Today and Research tabs and current official event announcements.
What a Meteorite does
A Meteorite teaches Rayquaza the Charged Attack Dragon Ascent. The Pokémon GO team says Dragon Ascent can only be learned using Meteorites. Rayquaza must know Dragon Ascent before it can Mega Evolve; Mega Energy alone is not enough. Pokémon GO’s Mega Rayquaza Raid Day announcement and its event information explain the move and Mega Evolution requirement.

Is a Meteorite available right now?
The latest documented offer was Ozone Ascent, held July 25–26, 2026. Its free Timed Research and paid Timed Research both included a Meteorite, but the reward deadline was 8 p.m. local time on July 26, 2026. That deadline has passed. The official announcements cited here do not confirm another currently open way to get one, so check the game for a newly available task rather than relying on an expired event offer. See the Ozone Ascent announcement.
How to check for a new Meteorite reward
- Open the Today and Research tabs. Look for an active event task that explicitly lists a Meteorite among its rewards.
- Read the event announcement. Confirm who can access the research, when it starts and ends in your local time, and when rewards must be claimed.
- Finish and claim the research before its deadline. Timed Research can expire; completing tasks is not enough if the reward itself remains unclaimed when the event ends.
Do not assume an expired event ticket or research can be bought later to recover its old reward. The Ozone Ascent announcement ties the cited rewards to the July 26 deadline.

Past documented ways Meteorites were awarded
| Event | Research route | Eligibility and deadline |
|---|---|---|
| GO Fest 2023 | Special Research awarded a Meteorite; ticket-holder research awarded an additional Meteorite. | Global event participants who logged in during the event hours on August 27, 2023 could receive the short research. In-person versions were limited to ticket holders. These were historical event offers. Official GO Fest 2023 announcement. |
| Mega Rayquaza Raid Day, October 18, 2025 | Timed Research awarded a Meteorite; separate paid research also awarded one. | The tasks and rewards expired at the end of the event window. This offer is over. Official event announcement. |
| Ozone Ascent, July 25–26, 2026 | Free and paid Timed Research each awarded a Meteorite. The paid route also listed Rayquaza Mega Energy. | Both routes had to be completed and rewards claimed by 8 p.m. local time on July 26, 2026. This offer is over. Official event announcement. |
These event examples establish research as a documented way Meteorites have been distributed, but do not establish a permanent or repeatable source. They also do not show that Meteorites are currently available from raids, the shop, or ordinary recurring tasks.
Use a Meteorite on Rayquaza
If you already have a Meteorite, use it from Rayquaza’s Pokémon page to teach Dragon Ascent. You will still need Rayquaza Mega Energy to Mega Evolve it after it learns the move. The move requirement and Mega Energy requirement are separate.

Can Rayquaza learn Dragon Ascent without a Meteorite?
No. Pokémon GO’s official announcement says Dragon Ascent can only be learned using a Meteorite. A Charged TM or Mega Energy is not a substitute for the item.
