How to Get a PS2 to Play DVDs in Widescreen

Set the PS2 DVD TV Type to 16:9 for a widescreen TV, or choose Letter Box or Pan Scan for a 4:3 screen. Includes fixes if the picture still looks wrong.

On your PS2, start the DVD, stop playback, then open DVD control panel → Setup → Screen Setup → TV Type and choose 16:9. If the option is unavailable, clear Resume Play first.

Set the PS2 DVD picture to 16:9

  1. Insert the DVD and start playback.
  2. Stop playback. The TV Type option cannot be changed while a DVD is playing or Resume Play is active.
  3. Press SELECT on the controller to open the DVD control panel. Choose Setup → Screen Setup → TV Type.
  4. Select 16:9 for a widescreen television. Return to the control panel, then stop playback or open the disc cover to save the setting.

Sony describes TV Type as the setting for matching the DVD picture’s aspect ratio to the connected television in its PlayStation 2 User Guide, SCPH-90002/SCPH-90003.

Choose the right setting for a 4:3 television

If your TV is a standard 4:3 set, choose between preserving the whole widescreen image and filling the screen by cropping its sides:

TV Type option What it does
4:3 Letter Box Shows the full wide picture, with margins above and below it.
4:3 PAN SCAN Fills the screen height by cutting off picture at the left and right.

If the DVD still does not look widescreen

  • Check the TV’s picture-size controls. The television’s own aspect-ratio or picture-size setting can override the PS2’s DVD setting.
  • Check the disc and TV. Some DVDs and some televisions do not allow the image size to be changed.
  • Bypass other equipment. If the PS2 is connected through a selector or AV receiver, connect it directly to the TV to see whether that restores image-size control.

These are among the causes listed in Sony’s DVD picture troubleshooting guidance and image-size troubleshooting guidance.

Progressive scan is not the widescreen setting

Progressive is a separate video-output feature, not the menu option to use simply to make a DVD widescreen. It requires a TV and AV cable that support 480p; Sony identifies the separately sold Component AV Cable as compatible. Enabling Progressive automatically changes TV Type to 16:9, but Sony advises turning it off if your equipment is incompatible or picture quality gets worse. See the Sony PS2 guide to Progressive output.
