In current Java Edition rules, make a saddle with 3 Leather and 1 Iron Ingot. Picking up your first leather unlocks the recipe in the recipe book. Hold the saddle and use it on a horse, donkey, mule, or pig to equip it. Pigs need a carrot on a stick to steer, while striders need a warped fungus on a stick. To recover a saddle, use shears on the saddled mob while nobody is riding it and you are not crouching.

The important version distinction is that this craftable recipe is documented for the Java 1.21.6 era. Older versions relied on generated chest loot, fishing, and some leatherworker-villager trades instead. Bedrock Edition is not covered by the Java release notes, so check the recipe book and the release notes for the exact Bedrock version you play.

A saddle is the item that lets you ride and control several Minecraft mounts. It is not armor and it does not improve an animal’s health, speed, jump, or protection. Its job is to provide the riding interface for a compatible mob.
The mount determines what happens after you equip it. Horse-like mounts can be directed while riding them. Pigs and striders can carry a rider, but steering requires a second item: a carrot on a stick for a pig or a warped fungus on a stick for a strider. Treat the strider interaction as version-sensitive if you are playing an edition other than current Java.

How to craft a saddle in Java Edition 1.21.6
Materials
- 3 Leather
- 1 Iron Ingot
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.6 release notes state: “Saddles can now be crafted with 3 Leather and 1 Iron Ingot.” A 2025 Minecraft announcement gives the same recipe and describes it as a direct replacement for the old acquisition methods.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUnlock the recipe
- Collect at least one piece of leather.
- Pick it up with your character. The first leather pickup unlocks the saddle recipe in the recipe book.
- Open a crafting table or the player crafting interface and search the recipe book for “Saddle.”
If the recipe is missing, confirm that the world is running Java Edition 1.21.6-era rules, that the leather entered your inventory, and that the recipe-book search is not filtering out craftable or unlocked recipes. The release-note change does not automatically apply to every older world version or to Bedrock Edition.

Craft it
- Open the recipe book from a crafting interface.
- Select the saddle recipe once it is unlocked.
- Ensure the inventory contains three leather and one iron ingot.
- Craft the saddle and move it to your inventory or hotbar.
The recipe book is the safest way to place the ingredients because it prevents an incorrect grid arrangement. If you are using a version whose recipe book does not show the saddle, do not assume a different ingredient count; use that version’s documented acquisition methods instead.
How to get a saddle without crafting
Older Java versions
Before the craftable-saddle change, Mojang documented saddles as treasure rather than a normal crafting output. Players could find them as chest loot in strongholds, temples, and dungeons. Saddles could also appear through fishing and could sometimes be bought from leatherworker villagers.
Those methods matter when a world is running an older Java release, when a server deliberately preserves older mechanics, or when a player has not upgraded a version that includes the new recipe. Exploration and trading require more time and have less predictable results than spending three leather and one iron ingot, but they are the relevant options for those versions.

Choosing the method by version
| Situation | Documented way to obtain a saddle | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition 1.21.6-era rules | Craft 3 Leather and 1 Iron Ingot after picking up leather | Predictable material cost; recipe appears in the recipe book after the first leather pickup |
| Older Java version | Chest loot in strongholds, temples, and dungeons; occasional fishing; some leatherworker-villager purchases | No craftable recipe under the older rules; finding one depends on exploration, fishing, or trading |
| Bedrock Edition | Not stated in the Java release notes cited here | Check the in-game recipe book and the release notes for the specific Bedrock version |
There is no authoritative drop-rate, fishing probability, or travel-speed figure established for this guide. Do not treat an anecdotal chest or fishing result as a guaranteed method.
How to put a saddle on a horse, donkey, mule, or pig
Equip a horse, donkey, or mule
- Put the saddle in your hotbar and select it.
- Stand close to the animal and use the saddle on it.
- Confirm that the saddle is visible in the animal’s equipment or riding interface.
- Mount the animal and test movement. If you can ride but cannot direct it, check the animal’s taming or ownership state rather than crafting another saddle.
Mojang’s saddle explainer explicitly documents use on horses, donkeys, mules, and pigs. The saddle supplies the equipment slot; it is separate from any armor or chest equipment that a particular mount can carry.
Equip a pig
- Select the saddle in your hotbar.
- Use it on the pig.
- Keep a carrot on a stick available before mounting.
- Ride the pig and use the carrot-on-a-stick item to influence its direction.
A pig can be saddled without the steering item, but the saddle alone does not give you normal directional control. The carrot on a stick is the required follow-up item for steering.

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen

Equip a strider
- Select the saddle and use it on the strider.
- Carry a warped fungus on a stick before mounting.
- Use that steering item while riding to guide the strider.
The steering-stick requirement is secondary guidance and should be checked against the edition and version in use. Current Java guidance pairs a saddled strider with a warped fungus on a stick; a saddle by itself is not a substitute for that control item.
How riding control differs by mount
| Mount | Saddle use | Additional control item | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horse | Use the saddle on the mount | None documented for ordinary steering | The saddle enables riding; movement is handled through the normal riding controls |
| Donkey | Use the saddle on the mount | None documented for ordinary steering | Ride after equipping; treat storage or other equipment as separate mechanics |
| Mule | Use the saddle on the mount | None documented for ordinary steering | Ride after equipping; the saddle is independent of other equipment |
| Pig | Use the saddle on the pig | Carrot on a stick | Without the steering item, you can mount but cannot properly direct the pig |
| Strider | Use the saddle on the strider | Warped fungus on a stick | Carry the steering item for practical movement; verify details for your edition and version |
This table separates the saddle’s equipment function from the item that provides steering. A missing steering item is not evidence that the saddle failed to equip.

- Make or obtain a pair of shears.
- Make sure the mount has no rider. Dismount first if necessary.
- Stop crouching; the removal interaction does not work while you are sneaking.
- Use the shears on the saddled mob.
- Pick up the saddle and equip it on another compatible mount.
In current Java rules, shearing a saddled mob removes the saddle for reuse. The two interaction blockers are explicit: a rider may not be present, and the player may not be crouching. If nothing happens, check those conditions before replacing the saddle or changing the mount.

- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Removal is useful when an expedition needs one saddle moved between animals, when a pig or strider is no longer needed, or when a mount is being reorganized in a base. The saddle is recovered rather than consumed by the shearing interaction.

The confirmed recipe in the available Mojang material is for Java Edition 1.21.6. That is the version reference to use when deciding whether three leather and one iron ingot should work. Java’s current rules also include the recipe unlock on the first leather pickup and shears-based saddle removal with the rider and crouching restrictions.
The cited material does not establish an equivalent Bedrock recipe, unlock trigger, or removal interaction. Bedrock players should open the recipe book in their exact game version and consult that version’s official release notes. Do not apply the Java 1.21.6 recipe to Bedrock merely because both editions use the same item name.
Edition and version checks are especially important on multiplayer servers. A server can run an older Java jar, a customized data pack, or a different edition from the client assumptions in a general guide. The recipe book and the server’s actual version are more reliable than a remembered recipe.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common saddle problems
The saddle recipe does not appear
- Pick up leather directly; merely having an uncollected drop nearby does not unlock a recipe.
- Confirm the world is using Java 1.21.6-era rules rather than an older release.
- Clear recipe-book filters and search for “Saddle.”
- On Bedrock, check the exact edition and release notes instead of assuming Java behavior.
The saddle will not equip
- Hold the saddle itself, not leather, iron, shears, or a steering-stick item.
- Use the interaction key on the compatible mount at close range.
- Check that the mob is one of the documented targets: horse, donkey, mule, or pig. For a strider, verify the interaction in the version you play.
- If an interaction opens a riding or animal interface instead, complete any taming or access requirement that version places on the mount, then try the saddle again.
I can ride but cannot steer
- For a pig, select a carrot on a stick.
- For a strider, select a warped fungus on a stick.
- For horse-like mounts, check ordinary movement controls and the mount’s state rather than looking for a carrot or fungus item.
Shears do nothing
- Dismount completely; the mob must have no rider.
- Stop crouching before using the shears.
- Target the saddled mob itself and use the shears at close range.
- If the interaction still fails, verify that the world follows current Java rules; older versions may not have the same removal behavior.
A quick decision guide
- Playing Java 1.21.6-era Minecraft? Collect three leather and one iron ingot, pick up the first leather to unlock the recipe, and craft the saddle.
- Playing an older Java version? Search strongholds, temples, and dungeons, or use the documented fishing and leatherworker-trade routes.
- Trying to ride a horse, donkey, or mule? Equip the saddle directly and test the mount’s normal riding controls.
- Trying to ride a pig? Equip the saddle, then carry a carrot on a stick for steering.
- Trying to ride a strider? Equip the saddle and carry a warped fungus on a stick; verify the exact interaction for your edition and version.
- Moving the saddle? Dismount, stop crouching, use shears, and collect the recovered saddle.
Key facts to remember
- Java 1.21.6-era recipe: 3 Leather + 1 Iron Ingot.
- The first leather pickup unlocks the recipe in the recipe book.
- Use the saddle on a horse, donkey, mule, or pig; strider behavior should be checked for the exact edition and version.
- Pigs require a carrot on a stick for steering; striders require a warped fungus on a stick.
- Shears recover a saddle in current Java rules, except when a rider is present or the player is crouching.
- Older versions used chest loot, fishing, and leatherworker-villager purchases instead of the modern recipe.
