Vexes are hostile flying mobs summoned by Evokers. In survival, you encounter them chiefly in woodland mansions and raids: one Evoker spell creates three Vexes, which can pass through blocks and remain active for about two minutes. The safest response is to kill the Evoker first, use ranged attacks when possible, block with a shield, keep moving in open space, and retreat if the swarm becomes unmanageable.

What a Vex is
A Vex is not a normal Overworld mob that appears because a particular light level, biome, or structure has been loaded. It is a hostile flying creature produced by an Evoker’s summoning spell. That distinction matters: looking for a Vex farm or waiting for one to appear naturally will not reproduce the survival encounter. You need to find the summoner.

Mojang’s official Evoker material identifies the Evoker as an illager that summons Vexes. In ordinary survival play, the relevant places to meet that Evoker are woodland mansions and raids. The Evoker may be surrounded by other threats, but it is the source of the Vex problem and therefore your highest-priority target.
How Vexes spawn in Minecraft
1. Find an Evoker
Enter a woodland mansion or participate in a raid until you locate an Evoker. The Vexes are tied to that encounter rather than to the structure’s floor, room, or a conventional mob-spawn rule.

2. The Evoker casts its summoning spell
When the Evoker uses the relevant spell, it summons three Vexes. Treat that number as the size of one summoning event, not as a promise that only three will ever appear in the fight.
3. More Vexes can follow while the summoner remains active
The combat guidance for this encounter recommends killing the Evoker as soon as possible because doing so prevents additional Vex waves. In practical terms, ignoring the Evoker while fighting its summons can turn a manageable encounter into several overlapping threats.

4. The summons are independent flying attackers
Once created, Vexes can move through blocks. A wall, ceiling, floor, or closed room is therefore not a dependable way to seal them out. Choose a position for visibility and movement rather than assuming that solid blocks will keep the flyers away.
Where you can encounter them
| Location or context | What it means for Vexes |
|---|---|
| Woodland mansion | Evokers can be present, making the mansion a principal survival source of summoned Vexes. |
| Raid | Evokers can appear as raid enemies and summon Vexes during the battle. |
| Ordinary Overworld exploration | There is no ordinary natural Vex spawn to wait for or farm; the practical survival trigger is an Evoker’s spell. |
| Minecraft Dungeons | Mojang’s Evoker description also places Evokers there, but that is a separate game context rather than a Minecraft survival spawning method. |
The same combat principles apply in both a mansion and a raid, but the surroundings differ. A mansion can give you narrow rooms and doorways that feel safe until a Vex passes through them. A raid can add other enemies and force you to make decisions while moving through a larger area. In either case, identify the Evoker before the number of summons grows.
Can Vexes fly through walls?
Yes. The cited combat and woodland-mansion guidance states that Vexes can pass through blocks, including walls and floors. This is why hiding behind a thin barrier often fails: the Vex may reach you without using a doorway or breaking the block.

Use buildings and terrain for line-of-sight management, not as an absolute prison. A corner can give you a moment to reset your aim, but a room with no escape route is dangerous if the Vexes are already inside or can enter through the surrounding blocks. Open ground, a courtyard, or another area where you can see the approach gives you more useful information and room to sidestep.

Temporary summons
Summoned Vexes are temporary. The combat tutorial and woodland-mansion guidance put their lifespan at about two minutes, after which they die or despawn. This timer changes the value of the fight: you do not always need to win a direct exchange with every Vex if you can stay alive and prevent the Evoker from creating more.
Loot is not a reason to chase them
The woodland-mansion guide says killed Vexes drop nothing. Because the summons expire and provide no ordinary reward in that guidance, running after every Vex through an unsafe room is usually a poor trade. Eliminate the Evoker, protect yourself from immediate attacks, and let remaining summons expire when a direct chase would expose you to greater danger.
Edition-specific drop behavior
A separate Vex reference records edition-specific behavior, including a possibility of an iron-sword drop in Bedrock. That conflicts with the broad mansion-combat advice that Vexes drop nothing, so do not plan a loot strategy around the sword possibility. Check the exact Bedrock release you are playing if drops matter to your test; edition and version can change the result.
Vex health, damage, and edition caveats
| Stat or behavior | What is established | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Summon count | One Evoker spell summons three Vexes. | Expect a group, not a single attacker. |
| Movement | Vexes can pass through blocks. | Do not treat walls or floors as reliable protection. |
| Lifespan | Summoned Vexes last about two minutes according to the cited combat and mansion guides. | Survival and disengagement can be valid alternatives to chasing them. |
| Hard-difficulty attack figure | One cited guide reports up to 13 HP, or 6.5 hearts, of Vex attack damage on Hard. | Use this as a cited Hard-difficulty figure, not as a universal value for every edition, version, or difficulty. |
| Health and other exact values | Edition-specific values are not established here as a complete current Java/Bedrock matrix. | Verify the target release before relying on a precise stat table. |
| Equipment and drops | References record edition-specific behavior, including a Bedrock iron-sword possibility. | Do not assume Java and Bedrock have identical drops or equipment rules. |
The 13-HP figure deserves special care. It is reported as attack damage on Hard, not as a claim that every Vex has 13 HP of health in every edition. If you are writing a datapack, balancing a challenge, or comparing Java with Bedrock, use the exact game version and edition rather than copying a cross-edition number.

How to beat Vexes: the reliable priority order
1. Locate and kill the Evoker first
The Evoker is the source of future Vex waves. If you can see it, make it your first target. A bow or another ranged weapon lets you damage the summoner without walking into the space occupied by the flying mobs. Killing the Evoker early is more valuable than clearing one Vex while leaving the caster alive.
2. Keep a clear line of sight
Vexes are small and difficult to hit when they dart around you. Move toward a position where their approach is visible instead of backing into a blind corner. In a mansion, this may mean stepping into a wider room or courtyard. During a raid, it may mean moving away from cramped structures while keeping track of the Evoker.
3. Use ranged attacks before melee range
When you have a clear shot, fire at the Evoker first and then at Vexes that are about to reach you. Ranged damage reduces the time you spend trying to swing at a fast target that can approach from an unexpected direction. Continue moving while you aim; the Evoker can keep casting while you reposition.
4. Raise a shield for the committed attack
The mansion combat guidance recommends a shield because Vexes are small and hard to hit. Let the shield absorb the incoming strike, then counterattack when the Vex has committed to its pass. Holding the shield continuously is less useful than watching the approach and timing your block, because you still need to see where the next Vex is coming from.
5. Do not fight from inside a sealed room
A sealed room feels protective against ordinary melee mobs, but it does not solve a Vex attack. Since the flyers can pass through walls and floors, the room can become a place where several attackers surround you with little warning. Use a room only as a temporary aiming position with an exit, not as a permanent bunker.

6. Retreat when the swarm is larger than your safe attention span
If several Vexes are attacking at once, leave the immediate area rather than trading hits until you are overwhelmed. The mansion guide specifically recommends fleeing and ignoring Vexes when necessary because they provide no reward and expire. Retreat is especially sensible when the Evoker has already been killed and the remaining summons are on their limited timer.
7. Re-enter only when you can see the threat
After creating distance, stop in an open position and count what you can actually track visually. Re-engage the Evoker if it is still alive; otherwise, remove a Vex only when you have a safe shot or shield timing. Do not return to the original room simply because the immediate noise has stopped.

- Prepare before opening the next room. Have a ranged weapon ready, keep a shield accessible, and identify the route back to a larger space. Your escape route matters because a Vex can ignore the room’s walls.
- Look for the Evoker rather than chasing a flyer. The summoner determines whether another wave can appear. If you see the caster, make it the first shot whenever the path is clear.
- Back into visibility, not into a dead end. Move through a doorway or around furniture only far enough to create sightlines. Avoid assuming that the next wall will stop pursuit.
- Use the bow while moving. Keep your movement unpredictable enough to avoid standing still for a spell or a Vex pass. Fire at the Evoker, then switch attention to a Vex that is within immediate striking distance.
- Block and counter. When a Vex commits to an attack, raise the shield, then strike during the opening. Because the target is small, wait for a visible approach instead of swinging at empty air.
- Break contact if three or more threats converge. A single summoning event produces three Vexes, and an active Evoker can create more. Run to open ground or another defensible area rather than allowing them to surround you.
- Finish the encounter on your terms. Once the Evoker is dead, decide whether a remaining Vex can be safely killed. If not, maintain distance and let the temporary summon expire.
A step-by-step raid encounter
- Separate the objectives. During a raid, other enemies may compete for your attention. The Vexes are dangerous, but the Evoker is the source of additional waves, so keep searching for it whenever you have a safe opening.
- Move away from structures that hide approaches. A wall does not stop a Vex, and a crowded raid area can prevent you from seeing its attack path. Favor space where you can identify the caster and the flyers.
- Use ranged pressure on the Evoker. Do not spend your entire attention budget on one Vex while the caster remains active. A quick ranged hit on the summoner can shorten the period in which the group grows.
- Shield the nearest strike. When a Vex reaches you, block its committed attack, then resume movement. Avoid standing still to duel one flyer while other raid enemies remain nearby.
- Disengage when the field becomes unreadable. If you cannot tell where the next Vex or Evoker is, retreat to restore sightlines. The temporary lifespan means disengagement can be strategically correct even when a raid is still active.
Choosing between killing, blocking, and waiting
| Situation | Best immediate choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Evoker is visible and you have a shot | Attack the Evoker | Removing the summoner prevents additional Vex waves. |
| One Vex is approaching in open space | Shield, then counterattack | The shield buys a safe moment against a small, difficult target. |
| Several Vexes converge | Retreat to open ground | Survival is more valuable than trading hits in a swarm. |
| Evoker is dead and a Vex is distant | Hold position or wait | Summoned Vexes are temporary and provide no reliable reward. |
| You are behind a wall with no visibility | Move to a position with an exit | Blocks do not guarantee that a Vex cannot reach you. |
Common mistakes and their fixes
“I will clear the Vexes before dealing with the Evoker.”
This reverses the priority. The Evoker can create more summons, so clearing one flyer while leaving the caster active may only buy a short pause. Shoot or reach the Evoker first whenever you can do so safely.
“A closed doorway makes me safe.”
It does not. Vexes can pass through blocks. Use the doorway to control your view and retreat path, not to assume the attack has been sealed out.
“I should chase every Vex for its drop.”
The cited mansion guidance says killed Vexes drop nothing, and the summons expire after about two minutes. Chasing a flyer through an unsafe area gives up the advantage of time for no dependable reward.

Edition-specific behavior is documented for health, damage, lifespan details, equipment, and drops. A complete current Java/Bedrock matrix is not established here, so name the edition and game version before relying on an exact number.
Why Vexes force movement
Minecraft designer Jens Bergensten explained the design goal in a 2016 Time interview: “I wanted to try something different.” He described wanting enemies that make players move instead of simply waiting for monsters to approach, rather than increasing difficulty only by giving an enemy more health or attack damage.
That explains why the standard answer is not a single weapon choice. The encounter tests target priority, visibility, movement, and timing. A bow addresses the distance to the Evoker; a shield addresses the Vex’s close pass; open space addresses the problem of an attacker that ignores walls; and retreat takes advantage of the summon’s limited lifetime.
Java and Bedrock: what to verify before relying on a number
Java and Bedrock should not be treated as interchangeable for detailed Vex documentation. Edition-specific references identify differences in attack damage by difficulty, health, summoned-Vex lifespan behavior, equipment and drops, and the behavior of Vexes created by commands or spawn eggs compared with Evoker summons.

The available evidence does not provide a complete, current version matrix for those axes. If you need a precise value for a farm, command setup, challenge map, or technical guide, verify it against the exact edition and release you are targeting. The practical combat advice in this guide remains the same: identify the Evoker, keep sightlines, use ranged attacks and a shield, and retreat when necessary.
Quick field checklist
- Find the Evoker in the mansion or raid encounter.
- Make the Evoker the first target whenever you have a safe shot.
- Expect three Vexes from one summoning spell.
- Fight where you can see the approach; walls and floors do not reliably stop them.
- Use ranged attacks while repositioning.
- Raise a shield when a Vex commits to its attack, then counter.
- Retreat if multiple Vexes overwhelm your view or movement.
- After the Evoker is dead, let distant summons expire instead of taking an unsafe chase.
Bottom line for a Vex encounter
A Vex fight is an Evoker fight first. One spell creates three temporary flyers, and those flyers can ignore blocks, so a bunker-and-melee approach is unreliable. Remove the summoner, preserve open sightlines, combine ranged pressure with shield timing, and use retreat as a deliberate tactic. Because the summons last only about two minutes and offer no dependable loot, staying alive is often the correct victory condition.
