Eternatus made its global Pokémon GO debut through the free GO Pass: Max Finale during Pokémon GO Fest 2025. The pass offered one catchable Eternatus encounter; defeating the separate Eternamax Eternatus boss in Max Battles did not let you catch it, but rewarded Eternatus Candy and Candy XL instead.
How Eternatus worked in Pokémon GO
The event’s two Eternatus encounters served different purposes. GO Pass progression led to the catchable Pokémon, while Max Battles against Eternamax Eternatus awarded resources to power up that Pokémon.
- Catchable Eternatus: The GO Pass: Max Finale included an encounter with Eternatus, a Poison- and Dragon-type Legendary Pokémon. Trainers could catch it once during the event.
- Eternamax Eternatus: This form appeared as a Max Battle boss. It could not be caught after a win; instead, victories awarded Eternatus Candy and Candy XL for the catchable Eternatus. The official event page noted that Eternatus required much more Candy and Candy XL than other Pokémon to power up because of its massive power.
In short, the pass provided the Pokémon and battles provided upgrade materials—not a second capture opportunity. Pokémon GO’s official Max Finale page described both mechanics.

How the GO Pass led to the encounter
Trainers automatically received the free GO Pass when it became available. Completing tasks earned GO Points, which raised pass rank and unlocked rewards, including the Eternatus encounter. The global event was unticketed and could be joined from anywhere, but the official page described the weeklong gauntlet as intended for Trainers level 13 and above.
What happened in Max Finale battles?
During Max Finale, Eternamax Eternatus took over most Power Spots as the Max Battle challenge. Pokémon GO described these as its biggest Max Battles yet and said they could only be won when enough Trainers joined together. The event page did not set a universal player count, so the number needed depended on the challenge rather than a stated fixed threshold.
Victories supplied large amounts of Eternatus Candy and Candy XL. The same event also brought back Crowned Sword Zacian and Crowned Shield Zamazenta, whose enhanced power through the GO Pass was intended to help Trainers progress through Max Battles. Every Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon that had appeared in Pokémon GO up to that point also returned.
