Check your ship’s exact port and berth before choosing a route: Adriatic cruise terminals are not all beside the historic centre. Dubrovnik’s Gruž port is about a 30–40-minute walk from the Old City, while Zadar’s Gaženica port is approximately 4 km from its historic centre. Confirm what transport runs on your call day, then leave time for the return trip before the ship’s all-aboard time.
Start by confirming the exact port and berth
“Adriatic port” is not specific enough to plan a trip ashore. Check your cruise documents or ask the cruise line which port and berth your ship will use. Then consult that port authority and the local transit operator for current routes, stops, schedules, and fares. A shuttle may be offered by the cruise line or a local operator; ask where it drops passengers and whether it costs extra.
The details below cover Dubrovnik and Zadar. They should not be applied to other Adriatic calls: the port-to-centre routes for every destination are not established here.
Dubrovnik: choose between walking, bus, and taxi
The Port of Dubrovnik Authority says Gruž, where the cruise port is located, is about a 30–40-minute walk from the historic Old City. It also gives a bus journey of around 10–15 minutes to Pile, depending on traffic, with buses to parts of town every 10–20 minutes. A taxi from the port takes about 7–10 minutes depending on traffic; the authority lists fares typically from around €10. These are published operational estimates, not guaranteed journey times or current fare quotes. Check the authority’s passenger guidance before relying on them.
#1 Best Overall
Walking
Walking avoids waiting for a vehicle and can suit passengers comfortable with the distance and conditions. The port authority recommends comfortable shoes and water, noting summer heat. Allow for the walk in both directions when deciding how long to spend in the Old City.
Bus
The bus to Pile is a scheduled alternative to the longer walk, but its journey time depends on traffic. Check the current service and fare for your port-call day rather than assuming the published frequency will match your visit.
Rank #2
Taxi
A taxi is the quickest of the listed options in the port authority’s estimates and may be more convenient if walking is difficult. Confirm the current fare and pickup arrangements locally; traffic can still affect the trip.
Zadar: check transport from Gaženica before heading ashore
Zadar Cruise Port places Gaženica Passenger Port approximately 4 km south of the historic town centre. Its FAQ lists taxis, private transfers, public buses, and cruise-organized shuttles as possible transport options. It says shuttles are generally provided by cruise lines or local operators on cruise days and advises passengers to check with the cruise line for details and possible fees.

The port information does not establish a fixed public-bus schedule or fare, or guarantee a shuttle for an individual call. Verify which services will actually operate, where they stop, and what they cost. The Zadar Tourist Board also provides cruise-port information for Gaženica.

- Walking distance, terrain, heat, and your mobility.
- Current fare and expected journey time.
- Whether the service runs on your ship-call day.
- Where the vehicle drops you relative to the old-town entrance.
- Accessibility, luggage, and whether you need a prearranged pickup.
- How predictable the return trip is before all aboard.
Save the return stop or pickup point, and allow a buffer for traffic, queues, and boarding procedures. Published journey times describe a route, not a guarantee that you will reach the ship on time. Bring comfortable footwear; for a hot-weather walk, carry water and sun protection.

Plan your port-to-old-town trip
- Confirm the port and berth. Use your cruise documents or ask the cruise line; do not plan from the destination name alone.
- Check current local information. Look up the port authority and transit operator’s routes, schedules, and fares for your call day. Ask the cruise line about any shuttle, its drop-off point, and any fee.
- Choose by distance, conditions, and time. In Dubrovnik, the walk is a substantial 30–40 minutes; in Zadar, Gaženica is about 4 km from the historic centre, so check transport options before setting out.
- Plan the return. Save the stop or pickup location and leave a buffer before the ship’s stated all-aboard time.
- Pack for the walk if you may make it. Wear comfortable shoes and, in summer, carry water and sun protection.
