In Minecraft: Java Edition 1.21.5 or later, use this command to give yourself a Diamond Sword with Sharpness 255:
/give @s minecraft:diamond_sword[enchantments={sharpness:255}]
Commands must be enabled in your world, or you must have permission to use them on the server. The syntax is for Java Edition; Bedrock uses a different /give format.

Give yourself a level 255 enchantment
- Open chat in a Java Edition world where you can use commands.
- Enter
/give @s minecraft:diamond_sword[enchantments={sharpness:255}]and run it. The command targets you with@s; replace it with another valid target selector or player name to give the sword to someone else.
Mojang’s Java 1.20.5 release notes document the enchantments component level as an integer from 0 through 255: Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.5. That is the component’s documented storage range, not a guarantee that every enchantment’s effects scale linearly or remain balanced at level 255.
Use the command format for your Java version
Java item command syntax changed in 1.20.5, and the enchantment component changed again in 1.21.5. Match the command to your game version:

| Java version | Enchantment component form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Before 1.20.5 | Older item NBT syntax; not the component syntax shown here | See the version-specific command guidance in Mojang’s 1.20.5 release notes. |
| 1.20.5 through 1.21.4 | enchantments={levels:{sharpness:2}} |
/give @s minecraft:diamond_sword[enchantments={levels:{sharpness:255}}] |
| 1.21.5 or later | enchantments={sharpness:2} |
/give @s minecraft:diamond_sword[enchantments={sharpness:255}] |
Mojang introduced the component format in Java 1.20.5; the simplified enchantment form is documented in the Java 1.21.5 release notes. The older 1.20.5–1.21.4 form is also shown in Mojang’s 24w09a snapshot notes. Replace the level in the example with the level you want, up to the documented component limit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use this command in Bedrock Edition?
No. Do not paste the Java command into Bedrock and expect it to work. Microsoft documents Bedrock’s `/give` syntax as /give <player> <itemName> [amount] [data] [components], with examples such as JSON components for block-breaking behavior; its official reference does not document a Java-style arbitrary enchantment-level map. See Microsoft’s Bedrock /give command reference. This limitation is about the documented command reference, not a claim about add-ons, external editors, or server modifications.
