If a Scythe, Axe, Pickaxe, or Watering Can is missing, first check your farmhouse and Mayor Lewis’ Manor: a basic replacement may appear beside your bed, in the refrigerator if your farmhouse has a kitchen, or in the Lost & Found box. If you lost equipment after collapsing in a dungeon, Marlon’s Item Recovery Service may help—but it restores only one item or stack, so choose carefully.
Where should you look for a missing tool?
- Check storage and the Blacksmith. Look through chests and other storage, check the farmhouse refrigerator, and visit Clint’s Blacksmith if the tool was being upgraded. Tools can be stored in chests, and an upgrade at the Blacksmith takes two days; during that time, the tool is unavailable. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s tools guide describes these mechanics. There is no systematic in-game search tool listed in the available guidance for finding a misplaced tool.
- Look beside your bed. A basic replacement for a lost Scythe, Axe, Pickaxe, or Watering Can may appear there.
- Check the refrigerator and Lost & Found. If your farmhouse has a kitchen, check its refrigerator. Also visit the Lost & Found box at Mayor Lewis’ Manor. Lewis may send a letter explaining that he found and returned the tool. These replacement locations are documented in the tools guide.
The official Stardew Valley 1.5 Update Full Changelog confirms the box’s addition: “Added lost & found box in Mayor Lewis’ house.” The official note confirms its general purpose for retrieving lost tools, but does not list a fee.

What does the Lost & Found box recover?
Mayor Lewis’ Manor is the place to check for the Lost & Found box. The Mayor’s Manor page describes other categories the box handles as well as lost tools. It is distinct from Marlon’s service: the box is a general recovery point, while Marlon’s service addresses items lost in particular dungeon collapses.
When should you use Marlon’s Item Recovery Service?
Use this route if you collapsed from low health in the Mines, Quarry Mine, Skull Cavern, or Volcano Dungeon and lost items as a result. Marlon’s Item Recovery Service is at the Adventurer’s Guild. According to the Adventurer’s Guild guide, the service charges the item’s sell price and mails the selected item overnight.

Can the Secret Woods recovery character replace a tool?
The official 1.5 changelog says a character in the Secret Woods can retrieve certain items that cannot be found again, for a price. It does not say ordinary tools qualify. Treat this as a possible route for eligible unique items, not a confirmed way to replace a missing Axe, Pickaxe, Watering Can, or Scythe; check the current game’s eligibility before relying on it. The official changelog provides the stated scope.
What if a tool is missing in multiplayer?
The community-maintained tools guide reports a multiplayer bug in which a lost tool may not be replaced, and describes a workaround. The available guidance does not establish that the workaround works on every platform or version, so treat it as an option rather than a guaranteed fix and keep a safe copy of the affected save before attempting it.
