Finish the main story, claim Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y through Mystery Gift, then investigate the deepest areas of Lysandre Labs from Lysandre Café. Complete the extra side mission that appears there to add Mewtwo to your team. The Pokémon Company’s instructions were published December 2, 2025; they do not state an end date for the gift distribution.
What you need before starting
- Complete the main story. The extra Mewtwo side mission is available only afterward.
- Connect your Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet and use a console profile linked to a Nintendo Account.
- Unlock Mystery Gift. The Pokémon Company estimates this takes approximately one hour of play; its guide does not specify whether that estimate applies to a new save.
The official instructions cover both Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and say the stones can be claimed with either a physical or digital game. How to claim Mewtwonite X and Y
- Open the in-game menu and select Mystery Gift.
- Choose Get via Internet and follow the prompts to receive both stones.
- Open your Satchel and check the Mega Stones pocket to confirm that Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y are there.
How to unlock the Mewtwo side mission
- After finishing the main story and claiming both stones, go to Lysandre Café.
- Explore the deepest areas of Lysandre Labs. According to the official guide, systems reactivate in response to the stones and make Mewtwo’s extra side mission available.
- Complete the mission to add Mewtwo to your team.
The official instructions identify the location and trigger, but do not provide a room-by-room route through the labs or encounter strategy.
How to choose Mega Mewtwo X or Y
Give Mewtwo the corresponding stone to choose its Mega form:

Changing the held stone changes which form Mewtwo can Mega Evolve into; the official guide describes both stones as rewards from the same Mystery Gift claim.

The Pokémon Company announced the distribution beginning December 2, 2025, but its instructions do not give an end date. Availability beyond the announced start is therefore not guaranteed by that page. Check Mystery Gift → Get via Internet in your game rather than relying on an assumed expiration date. The announcement is also listed on the company’s update index.
