To reduce future bats, change the conditions where they spawn rather than repeatedly removing them. The command is documented for Bedrock; if it is rejected in Java or another version, check the game’s command suggestions for the correct selector.
Remove bats that are already in your world
Open the command interface and enter /kill @e[type=bat]. The selector targets bats rather than every entity, so it avoids killing other mobs. Microsoft documents /kill as a command that kills entities and accepts a target selector; it requires cheats and Game Directors permission in Bedrock (Microsoft Learn: /kill command, last updated October 11, 2023).
The cited command reference covers Bedrock. If the command fails in Java or your version, use the in-game autocomplete to inspect available syntax and selectors instead of assuming the Bedrock form applies unchanged.
Check command access before enabling cheats
Bedrock singleplayer
Enabling Allow Cheats enables commands, but permanently disables achievement unlocking in that world—even if you later turn cheats off. Consider that consequence before changing the setting. Minecraft’s guide explains command access and this achievement effect (Minecraft: How to Use Commands in Minecraft, September 22, 2023).

#1 Best Overall
Java singleplayer and multiplayer
Java singleplayer uses Allow Commands. In multiplayer, whether you can run commands depends on your permission level. If you lack permission, ask the world owner or server administrator rather than trying to bypass it.
Reduce the chance of new bats spawning
If you want fewer future bats, adjust the conditions in the area where they appear instead of repeatedly running a removal command. Bedrock’s creator documentation describes spawn-rule filters for factors such as brightness, biome, and height, and lists bats among vanilla entities with spawn-rule data (Microsoft Learn: Data-Driven Spawn Rules, last updated November 7, 2023).

That overview does not give a bat-specific threshold, so it does not establish an exact light level or other precise setting that will prevent bats in every version or edition. Treat environmental changes as a way to alter eligible spawning conditions, not as a guaranteed universal bat switch.

| Approach | Best for | Permission or trade-off | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
/kill @e[type=bat] |
Removing bats currently present | Requires command access; Bedrock singleplayer cheats disable achievements permanently in that world | Targets bats, not all entities |
| Change spawning conditions | Reducing future appearances | Requires changing the environment or, in Bedrock creator workflows, spawn-rule configuration; exact bat threshold is not established by the cited overview | Can affect which mobs qualify in the changed area |
Turning off all mob spawning would be a broad intervention, not a bat-specific fix. The cited official sources do not establish a current cross-edition command and its side effects, so this article does not recommend a particular gamerule command.
