For the quickest route, check a Rune Broker in your character’s race capital: current guides report that Rune Brokers sell class runes, including Backdraft. If you want to complete the original discovery instead, activate four Ley Crystals in Azshara, Feralas, Searing Gorge, and the Hinterlands, defeat the Enraged Leywalkers they summon, then combine the four Leycrysts.
Choose how you want to get Backdraft
Backdraft is a Warlock rune for the helm slot. The original discovery route remains an option, but it is not required if a Rune Broker in your current game version offers the rune.

| Route | What to do | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Rune Broker | Visit a Rune Broker in a capital city and check the rune listings. Guides report that class runes and skill books are available there; confirm the current listing and price in game. | Players who want the direct purchase rather than the original discovery. |
| Original discovery | Activate four Ley Crystals, defeat the summoned Enraged Leywalkers, and combine the four zone-specific Leycrysts. | Players who want to complete the original route. |
| Alternate-character item | A Phase 6 guide describes buying an Emblem of the Worldcore from Pix Xizzix in Booty Bay after qualifying account progress, then redeeming it at a Rune Broker. | Eligible accounts acquiring the rune on an alternate character; check current requirements and cost with the vendor. |
Rune Broker stock, prices, and eligibility can change with patches. The cited guides describe different vendor contexts: Wowhead’s Warlock guide identifies Patch 1.15.8, while Warcraft Tavern’s Phase 6 guide reports Rune Brokers selling runes and skill books for one copper each. Treat that price and the alternate-character requirements as version-sensitive, and use the vendor’s current in-game listing as the final check.

The route requires four activation materials, one for each crystal. A Worldcore Fragment can be used; the guide also says a mage in the party can use a Scroll of Geomancy. Activating a crystal closes its Fel Portal and summons an Enraged Leywalker. Defeat all four to obtain the zone-specific Leycrysts, then combine one of each to learn Backdraft.

The coordinates below are approximate guide locations, not guaranteed exact pins. In particular, the Azshara coordinate is disputed in comments on the guide; use the broader landmark and verify the crystal’s location on your in-game map.

Alternative for eligible alternate characters
Warcraft Tavern’s Phase 6 guide describes a separate account-based route: an account that has completed a relevant rune process can buy an Emblem of the Worldcore from Pix Xizzix in Booty Bay, then redeem it at a Rune Broker. That guide lists Backdraft among the Warlock runes obtainable this way and reports a cost of five Tarnished Undermine Real. The eligibility, price, and vendor options are patch-sensitive, so check Pix Xizzix and a Rune Broker in your current version before spending currency or traveling.

Why Backdraft is a rune
Blizzard’s official Season of Discovery announcement describes runes as a way to “augment player characters in new and exciting ways by providing access to abilities not available in WoW Classic.” Backdraft is one of the Warlock runes in that system; the acquisition steps above are specific to this rune.
