To earn the Surge of Light rune through its original discovery, visit one of four graveyards between 9 PM and 6 AM server time, defeat the Echo of a Lost Soul, and use the Prophecy of the Lost Tribe it drops. The route is recommended for level 40 or higher. Rune Brokers in faction capitals offer an alternative, but buying and learning the rune may interfere with some discoveries or rune-related quests.
Choose between the discovery route and a Rune Broker

How to get Surge of Light through discovery
- Go during the listed spawn window. The Echo of a Lost Soul is reported to appear from 9 PM to 6 AM server time. The guide does not establish a dependable respawn interval within that window, so arriving during it does not guarantee an immediate spawn.
- Travel to one of the listed graveyards. The Wowhead Priest rune guide gives these locations:
- Tanaris: Gadgetzan graveyard —
/way 54.0, 28.6 - Swamp of Sorrows: graveyard southeast of Stonard —
/way 50.4, 61.1 - Stranglethorn Vale: Ruins of Aboraz —
/way 30.0, 73.0 - Hinterlands: graveyard northwest of Revantusk Village —
/way 72.6, 68.0
- Tanaris: Gadgetzan graveyard —
- Defeat the Echo of a Lost Soul. Loot Prophecy of the Lost Tribe and use it to learn Surge of Light.
How to damage the Echo of a Lost Soul
The Echo’s Protected by Shadows buff protects it from Fire, Frost, Holy, Nature, Physical, and Shadow damage. Wowhead recommends Arcane damage, including Starshards for Night Elf Priests or an Arcane-damage wand. Holy damage is not simply impossible: the guide says repeated Holy casts can wear down the protection, after which further Holy damage can finish the mob. Its in-game text, “Your holy magic has rendered the spirit vulnerable! Quickly, release it from its torment!”, signals that change.

Recommended level and preparation
Wowhead recommends level 40 or higher for the discovery route because the surrounding areas can be dangerous. This is a guide recommendation, not a level requirement enforced by the game; lower-level attempts are possible but riskier. Plan for nearby threats as well as the Echo, and allow for a wait if it has not appeared during the listed window.

What Surge of Light does
Surge of Light is a Priest bracer rune. A critical spellcast makes your next Smite or Flash Heal cast within 15 seconds instant; a related buff reference also lists Binding Heal. The Warcraft Wiki entry records an April 16, 2024 hotfix saying the instant-cast effect would no longer be consumed if Surge of Light was gained while casting Smite or Flash Heal. That note documents a historical change and does not establish whether later changes have been made.
