You can learn Chronostatic Preservation either by buying the rune from a Rune Broker in a faction capital or by completing its original Thousand Needles discovery. Buying is quicker, but the Wowhead guide warns it may interfere with some related discoveries or rune quests. To earn it the original way, collect and combine three Partial Spell Notes from burning mobs.

The broker locations and route details below come from Wowhead’s guide, updated March 6, 2024 and labeled Patch 1.15.8: Wowhead’s Season of Discovery Mage rune guide. Vendor stock and mechanics can change with patches, so check the live game if the guide no longer matches what you see.
Buy it from a Rune Broker
Rune Brokers in faction capitals sell Season of Discovery class runes and class skill books. The listed locations are:
Alliance
- Darnassus: Temple Gardens, 53.8, 13.6.
- Ironforge: The Forlorn Cavern, 53.8, 13.6.
- Stormwind City: Dwarven District, 57.6, 27.0.
Horde
- Orgrimmar: Cleft of Shadow, 49.6, 46.2.
- Thunder Bluff: Spirit Rise, 22.8, 13.8.
- Undercity: Magic Quarter, 79.8, 19.0.
Wowhead cautions that learning a rune from a vendor item may cause some related discoveries or rune quests to malfunction. It does not specify which ones. If you want to complete those discoveries or quests, use the original method instead; if you choose the broker, verify the relevant interactions in-game.

Earn it through the Thousand Needles discovery
You need a Mage with Frost spells trained. Wowhead describes using Frostbolt or Ice Lance to apply the Cooling Down effect to each burning mob until it can be killed. Gather all three Partial Spell Notes and combine them to create Spell Notes: Chronostatic Preservation, which teaches the rune. The guide recommends a group of Mages but says soloing is possible, and recommends level 30 or higher.
- Try the Seared Needles Cougar first. It is caged near the Great Lift at about 24.0, 23.6. Get a Cougar Cage Key from a Galak Mauler to open the cage, then use Frost spells to cool the cougar before killing it and collecting its note. Wowhead lists this mob first; community comments on the guide report key-drop problems if other notes are collected first, but that is anecdotal and may vary by patch.
- Find the Singed Highperch Consort. It is around 11.2, 39.8. Apply Cooling Down with Frost spells, kill it, and collect its Partial Spell Note.
- Find the Scorched Screeching Roguefeather. Look near the harpy caves on the southern wall, around 26.6, 47.2. Cool it with Frost spells, kill it, and collect its note.
- Combine the three notes. Use the collected Partial Spell Notes to receive Spell Notes: Chronostatic Preservation and learn the rune.
The guide does not state that the cougar must be done first. Trying it first is a cautious choice because of the reported key-drop issue, not a confirmed requirement. Mob positions are approximate.

What Chronostatic Preservation does
Chronostatic Preservation is a Mage Boots Rune. Blizzard described it as storing Arcane, Fire, and Frost energy briefly so the Mage can later release that energy to heal a friendly target in its Season of Discovery Phase 2 announcement.
Wowhead’s spell database lists a 20-second duration, a 2-second cast time, and a cost of 24% of base mana. These are database values, not a guarantee for every current build; spell details may change in later patches. See the Chronostatic Preservation spell entry for the listed values.
