To get the Perico Pistol in GTA Online, find the Sleeping Guard random event in San Andreas free roam, loot the Small Key, then use it on the locked drawer in El Rubio’s office during the Cayo Perico Heist finale. The eight locations below are convenient search regions, not a complete list of every possible spawn. No guaranteed spawn timer or verified fastest route is established.
How the Small Key and Perico Pistol unlock work
The Cayo Perico Heist was added to GTA Online in Rockstar’s December 15, 2020 content update. The heist can be scoped, prepared, and completed solo or with up to three other players, according to Rockstar’s update notes.

The Small Key comes from a Sleeping Guard random event in San Andreas free roam; it is not found on Cayo Perico. After you have the key, reach El Rubio’s office in the heist finale and unlock the drawer to collect the Perico Pistol.
Find and loot the Sleeping Guard
- Enter GTA Online free roam and travel around San Andreas. The event can appear at various locations in the world.
- Watch the map for a blue dot, which marks the Sleeping Guard event. The GTA Wiki says the event ends after ten minutes, so investigate promptly.
- Approach the guard and loot him. According to the GTA Wiki’s Sleeping Guard entry, the first nearby player who is not in Passive Mode can interact with him.
- Collect the Small Key. The Wiki reports that the first reward also includes GTA$7,007 and that the key is permanently added to the character’s inventory.
Eight useful regions to search
The following regions are the eight broad areas grouped by the guide from Position: Everything. They are useful places to check, but individual event spots are described differently across sources; the GTA Wiki lists additional named locations, so these are not the game’s only possible spawns.

The GTA Wiki location table also names spots such as Bahama Mamas West, Rancho, Mission Row, Grapeseed, North Chumash, and Great Ocean Highway locations. Because the lists group locations at different levels of detail, do not treat the eight regions as an exhaustive pin list. Check a current map reference for exact pins.
Use the key in the Cayo Perico finale
- Start the Cayo Perico Heist and progress to its finale.
- Reach El Rubio’s office during the finale.
- Use the Small Key on the locked drawer in the office and collect the Perico Pistol.
GTA BOOM’s guide says the pistol remains in your inventory after the heist and that ammunition can later be purchased at Ammu-Nation. See its Perico Pistol guide for the weapon and drawer details.

How to search without a guaranteed route
Position: Everything’s eight-region guide recommends scanning the map for the blue dot while checking areas by vehicle, and trying a fresh session if no event appears. These are practical suggestions, not a proven fastest route: the available guides do not establish a guaranteed spawn timer, measured success rates, or a tested route that beats other approaches.

- Keep the map visible and prioritize watching for the blue event marker rather than assuming the guard will appear in a particular region.
- Check the broad regions in an order convenient for your current location; no evidence establishes an optimal order.
- If the event does not appear, consider changing to a fresh session and searching again. This may be worth trying, but it does not guarantee a spawn.
- Do not attempt to loot the guard while in Passive Mode; the GTA Wiki says the nearby player must not be in Passive Mode to interact.
