For the straightforward early route, reach Fungal Wastes from Forgotten Crossroads via Greenpath, get the Mantis Claw in Mantis Village, then open the western City of Tears gate with the City Crest. You get the Crest by defeating False Knight; use it on the statue of Great Knight Hegemol at the gate.
Take the early route through Fungal Wastes
- Defeat False Knight in Forgotten Crossroads. He drops the City Crest, which you need to open the western entrance.
- Travel through Greenpath to Fungal Wastes. Find Mantis Village and obtain the Mantis Claw. You need it to navigate the relevant section of the Wastes on this route.
- Continue to the west main gate of City of Tears. At the gate, use the City Crest on the statue of Great Knight Hegemol to open the entrance.
The route follows the Pilgrim’s Way, which runs from Forgotten Crossroads through Greenpath, Fog Canyon, and Fungal Wastes toward the western gate. The area-route details are documented by the community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki’s City Crest entry and its Fungal Wastes entry.

- Ancient Basin: travel north using the Tram Pass.
- Kingdom’s Edge: use the broken-wall connection to King’s Station.
- Resting Grounds: take the lift down.
These connections have their own access or progression requirements. The community-maintained City of Tears area-access listing describes the alternate entrances.
