You cannot collect a turtle egg by breaking it without Silk Touch: it breaks without dropping an egg item. To get eggs, breed turtles with seagrass and let one return to its home beach to lay them. If eggs are already on the ground, leave them there and protect the area rather than trying to mine them.
Can you pick up turtle eggs without Silk Touch?
No. Breaking a turtle egg without Silk Touch destroys it instead of giving you an egg item, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s Turtle Egg reference. The available references do not establish a Java-versus-Bedrock version exception, so don’t count on an unenchanted tool working in your version.
Silk Touch is an in-game enchantment, not a real-world tool. Microsoft’s Introduction to Enchantments describes it generally: “Mined blocks will drop to the ground when destroyed.” That general description does not override the turtle-egg-specific no-drop behavior.
How to get turtle eggs without moving an existing egg
Breed turtles with seagrass
- Find two turtles and feed each seagrass so they breed.
- After breeding, allow the egg-laying turtle to return to its home beach. It lays an egg block there; the Turtle Egg reference describes this behavior.
- Leave the eggs where they are and protect the spot while they hatch.
This produces eggs without requiring you to break or relocate them. The cited mechanics do not establish a reliable way to make a turtle choose an arbitrary new beach, so building a different sandy area is not a guaranteed way to redirect egg laying.

What to do if you already found eggs
Do not break them with an unenchanted tool if you want to keep them: they will be destroyed rather than collected. Instead, keep the laying location safe and build around the eggs. The Turtle farming tutorial recommends building the farm around eggs when Silk Touch is unavailable.
