How to Get Your Minecraft World Back After Reinstalling

Minecraft world recovery depends on your edition and device. Check local, cloud, Realm, exported, and system-backup copies before replacing save data.

Whether you can get a Minecraft world back after reinstalling depends on whether a copy survived somewhere: on the device, in platform cloud storage, in a Realm backup, in an exported file, or in a device backup. First identify whether you played Java or Bedrock and which device you used; there is no single recovery path for every version. Check Minecraft’s Backup & Restore guide for the procedure that matches your setup before deleting or replacing any remaining data.

Before you try to restore anything

Write down the edition (Java or Bedrock), the device, and roughly when you last played the missing world. Then check whether you used a Realm, platform cloud saves, an exported world file, or a device backup. These are separate places a copy might exist, not interchangeable services. Minecraft’s edition guide lists Java for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and Bedrock for Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android, and iOS.

  • Do not uninstall again, delete save data, or import a file over an existing world until you have checked for a surviving copy.
  • If you find multiple copies, compare their dates before choosing one; an older copy may not include your latest builds or items.
  • Use Minecraft’s Backup & Restore index to open the instructions for your exact device and edition. It links to Java and Bedrock backup help, Windows and mobile guidance, Apple recovery, console cloud saves, Realms, and world transfers.

Check Xbox cloud saves

Minecraft says Xbox saves are tied to the Microsoft account. When the console is online and signed in, worlds are backed up automatically. A world played offline is backed up the first time it is played online; a world that has never been played online remains only on the console until it is backed up. The Xbox cloud-save instructions explain how to check whether worlds are cloud-synced, cloud-only, or local-only, and how to manage uploads and downloads.

Confirm you are signed into the account that held the world, then inspect its cloud status using Minecraft’s current instructions. The documented sync procedure can involve removing an outdated local console copy so the game downloads the cloud copy. That deletes local data, so only follow that step after confirming the intended cloud save exists; it is not a safe first action when you do not know which copy is current.

Restore a Bedrock Realm backup

If the world had been uploaded to a Bedrock Realm and a suitable backup is available, Minecraft lets you restore a manual or automatic save from the Realm’s world-management interface. Follow the current Bedrock Realm backup restore instructions, and compare the available save dates before selecting Restore.

Restoring rolls the world back to the selected save, including its builds and items. Progress made after that point may be lost. This option cannot retrieve a local world that was never uploaded to the Realm.

Check Windows Bedrock cloud backup availability

Minecraft’s Bedrock 26.40 changelog documents cloud backup for Windows world data. This is version-specific: it does not establish that cloud backup was available to your installation when the world disappeared, or that it applies to other platforms. Check your installed version and storage settings, and account for the changelog’s mention of cloud-storage-full error handling; a full cloud quota can affect syncing.

Look for a local, exported, or device-backup copy

For other devices and editions, use the matching article in Minecraft’s Backup & Restore index. It links to guidance for Java world backups and backup locations, Bedrock backups on Windows, Android, and iPhone/iPad, Android storage, missing worlds on Apple devices, importing Bedrock worlds on Windows, Java transfers, and Switch and PlayStation cloud saves. Follow the relevant official instructions rather than applying a file path or menu sequence intended for another platform.

  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).

If you previously exported the world or made a separate device or system backup, restore or import that copy using the official procedure for your edition and device. A USB drive can hold a future backup only on platforms that permit exporting or copying files; it cannot recover a world if no copy remains.

If no copy turns up

The official sources linked here do not provide a guaranteed recovery method when the local save, cloud copy, Realm backup, exported file, and device backup are all gone. A reinstall alone does not prove that the save was deleted, so check each applicable location first. But do not assume a new Realm subscription or recovery utility can recreate a world that was never backed up; no guaranteed route is established for that situation.
