To let other players use commands in Minecraft, first check the edition and hosting setup. A world host can enable commands in world settings; on a multiplayer server or Realm, the owner or an administrator may also need to grant the player permissions. These are separate controls: commands must be available in the world, and the player must have enough authority to use them.
First identify your Minecraft setup
Check whether the players are using Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, then identify whether the game is a local world, a LAN session, a Realm, or a dedicated server. Java and Bedrock multiplayer are separate; players generally need to use the same edition to join one another’s hosted games. See Minecraft’s edition comparison.
There are two permission questions to resolve:
- Are commands enabled for the world? The host controls this with the world’s command or cheat setting.
- Does this player have permission? In multiplayer, command use depends on the player’s permission level. The owner or administrator controls that access.
Enable commands in a local world or LAN game
Bedrock single-player world
- Open the world’s settings and select Game.
- Switch on Allow Cheats.
Enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world, even if you later turn cheats off. Check Minecraft’s command guide for the current explanation of commands and world settings.
Java single-player world
When creating the world, enable Allow Commands. For an existing world, open its world options and enable Allow Commands.

Java LAN world
- The host opens the game menu and selects Open to LAN.
- In the LAN settings, set Allow Commands to permit command use for players who join.
- Start the LAN session.
This setting applies to the temporary LAN session the host opens.
Grant permissions on a server or Realm
Bedrock dedicated server
An administrator can grant a player operator status by running this command from an account or server console that already has administrative authority:

/op <player>
Microsoft documents the Bedrock syntax as /op <player: target> and identifies it as an admin-level command. An ordinary player cannot use it to grant themselves access. See Microsoft’s Bedrock /op command reference.
Realm
The Realm owner or an admin manages member permissions through the Realm interface. In Bedrock, open Play → Realms → the Realm’s Hub, then use its management and member controls to adjust access. Labels and layout can vary as the client changes; Minecraft Help explains Realm world and player management.

Java dedicated server
The official Java server setup guide covers downloading and running a server, but it does not establish an exact operator-grant procedure. Check current Java server documentation or the server host’s control panel rather than assuming Bedrock’s /op reference applies. Self-hosting may also require network configuration; the official Java server download and setup page describes the server setup and Realms as a hosted alternative.

If another player still cannot use commands
- Confirm all players are using the same edition and compatible game versions.
- Check the world setting: Allow Cheats in Bedrock or Allow Commands in Java.
- For a multiplayer server, ask its owner or administrator to assign the required permission level.
- For a Realm, have the owner or admin review that member’s Realm permissions.
- If a child account cannot join multiplayer at all, review its multiplayer account permissions; account-level restrictions can prevent joining before command access becomes relevant. See Minecraft Help’s edition and multiplayer guidance.
