Use /effect give <player> minecraft:blindness 30 in Java Edition, or /effect <player> blindness 30 in Bedrock Edition. Replace <player> with a name or target selector. Both examples apply blindness for 30 seconds.
Enter the command for your edition

Type the command in chat with its leading slash. The syntax differs by edition: Java uses the give subcommand and the namespaced effect ID, while Bedrock places the effect directly after the target. See Mojang’s command guide for command entry and permissions, and Microsoft’s Bedrock /effect reference for Bedrock syntax and arguments.

Choose who receives blindness
Replace <player> with a player name or a target selector. For example, @s targets the command’s executing entity, typically yourself when you enter the command in chat, and @p targets the nearest player.
- Java, nearest player:
/effect give @p minecraft:blindness 30 - Bedrock, nearest player:
/effect @p blindness 30 - To target yourself in chat, substitute
@sfor<player>.
On a server or in a command block, check which entity executes the command and how the selector resolves; the target may not be the person you expect.

Check commands and permissions
You need permission to run commands. In Java single-player, enable “Allow Commands” when creating the world or later in World Options. In Bedrock single-player, enable “Allow Cheats” in Game settings. Mojang warns that enabling cheats permanently disables achievement unlocking in that world, even if you later turn cheats off. On a multiplayer server, you need sufficient permission; ask the administrator if you do not have it.
Commands can be entered in chat, and Mojang also describes command blocks, data packs, behavior packs and server consoles as command execution routes. In-game suggestions and autocomplete can help fill in arguments for your installed version.

Adjust duration or use an indefinite effect
The examples above specify 30 seconds. In Bedrock, the documented duration unit is seconds; its reference lists 30 seconds as the default. The documented default amplifier is 0, so you can omit it for ordinary blindness. The optional hideParticles argument controls the effect’s visual representation.
Java Edition
Java’s current command pattern is /effect give <targets> <effect> [seconds] [amplifier] [hideParticles]. Java 1.19.4 added infinite as a duration option, so on a compatible version you can use /effect give <player> minecraft:blindness infinite. Clear it manually when you are finished. Mojang documents the duration addition in the Java Edition 1.19.4 release notes; older Java tutorials may not show it.

Bedrock Edition
Microsoft documents these forms: /effect <player> <effect> [seconds] [amplifier] [hideParticles] for a timed effect, and /effect <player> <effect> infinite [amplifier] [hideParticles] for an indefinite one. The 30-second command is a finite option and does not require the optional amplifier or particle arguments.

Troubleshoot a command that fails
- Check the edition. Use the Java form with
giveandminecraft:blindness, or the Bedrock form withblindnessdirectly after the target. - Check permissions. Confirm commands or cheats are enabled in a single-player world, or that you have the required server permission.
- Check the target and effect ID. Verify the player name or selector, then use
minecraft:blindnessfor Java orblindnessfor Bedrock. - Use command suggestions. Type the command in game and follow its autocomplete and argument suggestions for your installed version.
- Account for Java syntax changes. Older tutorials may use a pre-update form; modern Java syntax uses
/effect give.
