Most guides list 8 as the shipped value and report that well-equipped dedicated servers can support 16 or more players, but those higher figures are community or hosting estimates rather than an official limit.

If Xbox or PlayStation crossplay matters, plan around eight players: multiple current guides report an eight-player ceiling, and setting a higher value can make the server disappear from console browsers. Crossplay also requires the listed anti-cheat, sanctions and mod settings, plus a vanilla server.

What actually controls your player limit?
The setting that determines the configured maximum is ServerMaxPlayerCount in the dedicated server’s serverconfig.xml. Guides commonly show 8 as the shipped value. That is a configuration default, not proof that every machine can safely host eight players or that eight is a technical ceiling.
Dedicated-server guides and hosting communities report that 16 or more players are possible with adequate hardware. No official developer hardware specification or universal maximum was available for this article, so treat those numbers as planning estimates. The practical limit is the point at which simulation ticks, world saves, AI, networking or client frame rates become unacceptable.

Configured capacity versus playable capacity
- Configured capacity: the integer in
ServerMaxPlayerCount. It controls how many connection slots the server advertises. - Playable capacity: the lower number your CPU, memory, storage, upload connection and world settings can sustain during the busiest event, especially a Blood Moon.
- Platform capacity: console crossplay introduces an additional reported ceiling of eight players, regardless of what the XML accepts.
Changing the XML does not create hardware headroom. It only permits more simultaneous connections; the server still has to simulate every player, loaded chunk, zombie and network update.
Before changing anything: back up and identify your server type
Use a dedicated server installation rather than a peer-hosted game when you need a persistent world and predictable slot management. Stop the server cleanly before editing files so that the current configuration is written and no process overwrites your change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Stop the server through your host’s control panel or console command.
- Make a copy of
serverconfig.xmland your world/save directory. Name the copy with the date so you can roll back. - Confirm whether the server must accept PC-only players or PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players. PS4 and Xbox One are reported as unsupported for this crossplay configuration.
- Record the current player count, view distance, zombie settings, RAM use and CPU use. These are your baseline for judging whether an increase helped or hurt.
Step-by-step: raise the slot count safely
1. Edit ServerMaxPlayerCount
Open serverconfig.xml in a plain-text editor. Find the property named ServerMaxPlayerCount and change only its numeric value. For example, an eight-slot configuration would become a 12-slot configuration by changing the value to 12. Preserve the quotation marks, XML syntax and surrounding comments.
Do not create duplicate properties. If the file contains the same key twice, the server may use only one occurrence or fail to parse the file, depending on the hosting software.
2. Save, restart and verify
- Save the file as plain text in the server’s actual configuration directory.
- Start the server and wait for the normal world-load completion message.
- Join from a client and check the browser or server information panel for the advertised slot count.
- Ask a second player to connect. A successful connection confirms that the value was loaded; it does not prove the machine can sustain the full number.
3. Increase in steps, not all at once
Move from 8 to 10 or 12, observe a normal session, then test the largest expected group. If that remains stable, try 14 or 16. A staged increase makes it easier to identify the change that caused timeouts, rubber-banding, delayed zombies or save stalls.

How much hardware do more players need?

| Target group | Reported CPU guidance | Reported memory guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4–8 players | Six cores at 4 GHz or higher; examples cited by guides include Ryzen 5600X and Intel 12400 | 12–16 GB | A sensible starting range for a lightly modded or vanilla server, with headroom for the operating system. |
| 8–16 players | Hosting guidance commonly suggests 6–8 cores at 4.0 GHz or higher | 12–16 GB | Vendor opinion; sustained boost clocks and single-thread performance matter more than core count alone. |
| 16–30 players | Not consistently stated | 32–48 GB | Community table estimate. Test the actual world and settings before promising this range. |
One hosting guide advises avoiding Xeon or EPYC systems unless their boost clocks exceed 4.5 GHz. That is a vendor preference, not a game rule: a newer processor with strong per-core performance can outperform an older server CPU with more total cores.
Memory planning
A vanilla minimum of 8 GB is reported by one source, but it leaves little room for the operating system, file cache and peak activity. Starting an eight-slot server with 12–16 GB gives more useful headroom. A vendor estimate puts additional memory at roughly 150–300 MB per player, depending on view distance, inventory state and active chunks. Because that estimate is not tied to a named publisher or dated test, use it as a sizing heuristic rather than a promise.
For a 16-player target, 16 GB may work in a restrained vanilla setup, while 32 GB provides safer room for large worlds, longer uptime and other services. Do not allocate every physical gigabyte to the game process; leave capacity for the operating system and monitoring tools.
Storage and save operations
Fast storage reduces the time spent writing world data, but it cannot compensate for an undersized CPU. A hosting vendor claims an NVMe Gen 4 drive can complete the same save operation in 100–200 ms; that figure is low-confidence and has not been independently verified here. Treat NVMe as a sensible latency choice, not a guaranteed performance number. Keep free space available for world growth, backups and log files.

Bandwidth and monthly transfer
One estimate places upload demand at 50–100 KB/s per player. Another estimates 3–5 TB of monthly transfer for a 16-player server. Neither figure includes a named publisher and year, and real traffic varies with activity, view distance, reconnects, updates and host overhead.
Use the estimates to check whether a host’s transfer allowance is plausible, then measure the live interface. At the upper per-player estimate, 16 simultaneous players would represent about 1.6 MB/s of upload before protocol overhead. A 3–5 TB monthly allowance is therefore a planning range, not a forecast. Choose a connection with stable upstream capacity and low packet loss; a high headline speed does not prevent lag caused by saturation or routing problems.
What to monitor
- Average and peak outbound bandwidth, including the host’s overhead.
- Packet loss, latency and reconnect frequency.
- CPU utilization and, if available, the server thread’s frame or tick time.
- Resident memory and swap activity.
- Disk latency during autosaves and world transitions.
Blood Moon nights are your stress test
Normal exploration understates load. Blood Moon spawning scales with the number of players; guides report a default BloodMoonEnemyCount of 8 enemies per player. Sixteen players can therefore create a much larger simultaneous encounter than one player, even when the world is otherwise quiet.
Schedule your capacity test on a real Blood Moon or a controlled equivalent. Watch whether zombies appear late, movement becomes erratic, clients disconnect, or the server takes unusually long to save. If the server is stable on ordinary days but fails during the horde, the horde workload—not the nominal slot count—is your limiting factor.
Settings that trade visual range for stability
ServerMaxWorldViewDistance
Guides report a default value of 10. Lowering it to 6–8 reduces the amount of world each player keeps active and can reduce CPU work per player. The trade-off is a shorter visible horizon and less distant terrain detail. Change it in small increments and have players test travel, base defense and vehicle routes before making the lower value permanent.

MaxSpawnedZombies
Sources conflict: one guide describes 60 as a hard cap, while another warns that values above roughly 80 can cause frame-rate loss and lag. Because the figures are not reconciled by official documentation, use 60 as a conservative planning ceiling and avoid increasing the value while you are already adding players. If you tune it, change one variable at a time and test during a horde night.
Blood Moon enemy count
Reducing the per-player Blood Moon count can protect simulation performance at larger populations, but it also changes the survival balance. Explain the change to players before applying it. A lower enemy count is a gameplay compromise, not a substitute for adequate CPU capacity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Crossplay: why eight players is a hard planning boundary
Several third-party guides report that crossplay between PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is capped at eight players. They also report that setting ServerMaxPlayerCount above 8 can hide the server from console players without displaying a clear error. Consequently, a crossplay community should leave the value at 8 even if the machine could handle more PC users.
PS4 and Xbox One are reported as unsupported in this crossplay setup. Confirm each player’s platform generation before troubleshooting a connection that cannot work by design.
Reported crossplay configuration
| Setting or rule | Reported requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
ServerMaxPlayerCount |
8 or fewer for console crossplay | Higher values are reported to remove the server from console listings. |
ServerAllowCrossplay |
true |
Enables the crossplay setting described by the guides. |
EACEnabled |
true |
Listed as part of the crossplay requirements. |
IgnoreEOSSanctions |
false |
Listed as required by crossplay configuration tables. |
| Mods folder | Vanilla only | One wiki reports that mods in the folder break console connections. |
Reports disagree about the exact update in which dedicated-server crossplay became available. An older article says it was not live and referred to update 1.2, while later guides associate availability with subsequent major updates, including references to V2.0 in June 2025 and V3.0 “Dead Hot Summer.” Because the exact release date was not verified, check the current dedicated-server and platform build information before diagnosing a version mismatch.

A practical growth plan
Plan A: PC-only, up to eight players
- Set
ServerMaxPlayerCountto 8. - Use a six-core CPU at 4 GHz or better and 12–16 GB RAM as an initial target.
- Keep world view distance at the default only if CPU and tick-time measurements remain healthy.
- Run a Blood Moon test with the expected group before inviting additional players.
Plan B: PC-only, 9–16 players
- Raise the value to 10 or 12, restart, and verify the advertised slots.
- Retest on a Blood Moon and during travel through multiple bases.
- Move toward 14 or 16 only when memory remains below physical capacity and CPU does not remain saturated.
- If load spikes, lower view distance to 6–8 before reducing slots, then retest.
Plan C: Console crossplay
- Keep the maximum at 8.
- Set crossplay to
true, keep EAC enabled, setIgnoreEOSSanctionstofalse, and remove gameplay mods from the server’s Mods folder. - Use only supported current console generations: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are reported as supported; PS4 and Xbox One are not.
- Test discovery from a console account after every configuration change.
Plan D: More than 16 players
Do not promise 20–30 slots because a table lists that range. Treat 32–48 GB RAM as a community estimate for 16–30 players, then validate the actual world, zombie population, view distance and Blood Moon behavior. Consider multiple smaller servers if one instance cannot deliver consistent tick times; separate worlds avoid turning one overloaded simulation into a poor experience for everyone.
Troubleshooting after an increase
The new slot count does not appear
- Confirm the file was edited on the live server, not a local copy.
- Check XML syntax and ensure the property appears once.
- Stop and start the process rather than relying on a soft reload.
- Review startup logs for a parse error or a host panel that regenerates configuration.
Players connect, then rubber-band or time out
- Compare CPU and tick-time data during the incident.
- Check upload saturation and packet loss.
- Lower
ServerMaxWorldViewDistancefrom 10 toward 8 or 6. - Do not raise
MaxSpawnedZombieswhile diagnosing; use the conservative 60 value reported by one guide. - Repeat the test on a Blood Moon to distinguish ordinary network trouble from simulation overload.
The server disappears for console players
- Set
ServerMaxPlayerCountback to 8 or lower. - Verify
ServerAllowCrossplay=true,EACEnabled=trueandIgnoreEOSSanctions=false. - Remove mods and test a completely vanilla instance.
- Confirm every console is PS5 or Xbox Series X|S and that builds are compatible.
Memory fills over time
Record memory after startup, after several hours, and during a horde night. If usage approaches physical RAM or the operating system begins swapping, reduce slots or view distance, remove unnecessary services from the machine and add memory before expanding again. A larger swap file can prevent an immediate crash but will not provide game-quality performance.

Add a slot only when all of these checks pass during your busiest expected event:
- The server thread remains responsive, with no repeated tick stalls.
- Physical memory retains operating-system and cache headroom.
- Upload usage stays below the host’s sustained limit, with no packet loss.
- World saves complete without long pauses or failed writes.
- Players report normal zombie behavior, movement and inventory responses.
- Crossplay rules are still satisfied if console users are part of the community.
If one check fails, reduce the workload first—usually view distance, horde population or slot count—then test again. Capacity is the highest player count that remains stable under the worst routine workload, not the largest number the browser allows.
The Bottom Line
For a reliable expansion, start at eight slots with 12–16 GB RAM and a fast six- to eight-core CPU, then increase ServerMaxPlayerCount gradually while testing Blood Moon nights. PC-only servers may reach 16 or more according to community and vendor estimates; servers that need Xbox or PlayStation crossplay should remain at eight slots, use the required crossplay settings, and stay vanilla.
