There is no single setting that turns off personalized product recommendations everywhere. A retailer may tailor products on its own website or app, a search service may personalize shopping listings, and ads may be selected using activity collected elsewhere. To reduce personalization, check controls separately at the store, search service, browser, and device levels. Turning a setting off may limit future use of particular activity; it does not necessarily delete information already saved, stop all data collection, or prevent results from being ranked using your current search or other context.
First, identify which recommendations you want to change
“Personalized recommendations” can refer to several different things. Before changing settings, note where the products appear and which account or app you were using. A control that affects one service or device should not be assumed to affect the others.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Retailer recommendations: Products suggested on a store’s website or in its app. The retailer may offer a privacy or personalization control, but its scope can differ between its website and app.
- Personalized shopping search results: Listings shown by a search service, which may use account activity in addition to the words in your current query.
- Ads: Promotions displayed on a retailer, search service, or another site. Turning off one kind of personalization does not necessarily remove ads or stop every service from collecting information.
- Contextual results: Results influenced by the query you just entered or context such as language, location, and device. These can remain relevant even when a personalization setting is off.
These categories can overlap. For example, a search listing can reflect the product you asked for and also be affected by settings on the search account. The practical goal is to identify the source of each recommendation and use the control offered by that source.
Use this sequence to reduce personalization
- Check the retailer first. Look in its privacy, personalization, or account settings for a control covering product recommendations or personalized shopping. Read whether the control applies to the website, the app, or both.
- Check the search service. If recommendations appear in shopping listings or search results, review that service’s personalization settings while signed in to the account you use for searching.
- Review browser and device controls. A browser may control whether its activity is saved and used to personalize experiences from its provider. Browser privacy controls are not a universal opt-out from every retailer or advertising service.
- Decide separately whether to manage past activity. Turning off personalization and deleting or pausing saved account activity are different actions. Review the relevant activity controls if you want to change what is stored or available for other uses.
- Repeat for each place you shop. Check other retailer accounts, apps, browsers, and devices you use. A setting on one site or device should not be treated as a global preference.
When a control is unclear, check its description for three things: which data it covers, where it applies, and whether it changes future use, stored history, or both. Provider interfaces can change, and the examples below describe controls documented by those providers rather than a universal procedure.

Turn off shopping personalization in Google Shopping and Search
Google Shopping Help describes a Personalized Recommendations setting under Search services. Google says that shopping listings can use current search terms and that the settings are being updated. This makes the control worth checking if your concern is Google Shopping recommendations, but it does not mean every shopping result will disappear or become identical for every person.
Google Search Help makes a related distinction: Search personalization is not the same as saved account activity, and contextual factors can still influence results. Google identifies location, language, device, and the current query as context that may affect what appears.
- Look for the Personalized Recommendations control in Google’s Search services settings when the issue is shopping listings.
- Review Google Search personalization separately if your concern is broader search results.
- If you also want to change stored activity, review account activity controls independently. A Search personalization setting does not automatically pause or delete saved account activity.
The names and locations of Google settings may change as its settings are updated. Confirm that a control describes shopping or Search personalization before relying on it. Even with personalization limited, a product listing can still be relevant because it matches what you searched for or because of contextual information.

Retailers control recommendations on their own services, so a search-engine or browser setting is not a substitute for the store’s own privacy options. Nordstrom’s Opt Out page is one documented example: its privacy opt-out can limit personalized shopping experiences and product recommendations on the website, but the website control applies to the browser and device in use. Nordstrom says app settings must be handled separately.

For a retailer account, use this checklist:
- Find the retailer’s privacy or opt-out information and check whether it names product recommendations or personalized shopping.
- Check the stated scope: account, browser, device, website, or app. Do not assume a website preference carries over to the retailer’s app.
- If you shop while signed in on more than one device or browser, check whether the retailer describes the setting as account-wide or device-specific.
- Look for separate choices concerning saved activity or data deletion if changing historical information is also your goal.
Nordstrom is an example, not a template for every store. The available controls, their reach, and the applicable legal opt-out rights can differ by retailer, location, and interface. Follow the store’s own description rather than assuming that the same menu or effect exists elsewhere.
Review browser-level personalization in Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Support documents an Edge control for whether browsing activity is saved and used to personalize Microsoft experiences, including shopping recommendations. Microsoft says that stopping this sharing means it will no longer collect and use the browsing activity for personalization of advertising or experiences from that point forward.
This control is relevant when the concern is use of Edge browsing activity for Microsoft’s own personalized advertising or experiences. It is not a general switch for recommendations created by a retailer, another browser provider, or every ad service. The support page describes the effect prospectively; it does not establish that turning the control off deletes activity already saved elsewhere.

Understand what private browsing and cookie controls can—and cannot—do
The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to review browser privacy settings and delete cookies or browsing history when appropriate. It also explains the limit of private browsing: some browsers clear local browsing history after a session ends, but this does not block websites from seeing online activity.
Private browsing is therefore useful for limiting what is retained locally after a session, but it is not an opt-out from retailer-side or search-account personalization. If you are signed in to a service, its account settings remain relevant. Nor should a private window be treated as anonymity: the FTC’s guidance specifically cautions that websites can still see activity.
Deleting cookies or history can remove some locally stored browser information, but it is not the same as deleting an account’s saved activity or changing a retailer’s personalization preference. Choose the action that matches the problem:
Recommended Free Tools
- Want less local browser history? Review browser history and cookie controls.
- Want to limit account-based recommendations? Change the relevant retailer or search-account personalization setting.
- Want saved account activity changed or removed? Use that provider’s activity-management or deletion controls separately.
- Want fewer personalized ads? Review the relevant ad opt-out options; browser privacy settings alone may not cover every advertiser.
Know what Amazon’s About You does
Amazon describes About You as a place to review and edit inputs used for personalization. Its listed inputs include purchase history, Alexa shopping conversations, reviews, Lists, and searches. This is useful if you want to inspect or adjust information influencing shopping experiences, but the existence of editable inputs is not evidence of a universal recommendations-off switch.

If your aim is to stop a particular kind of recommendation, do not assume that editing About You disables every recommendation or changes activity held by other services. Check the wording of each available choice and distinguish editing personalization inputs from deleting records or opting out of a separate service.
What to expect after changing a setting
A successful change can reduce the use of the covered activity for the covered service’s personalized experiences. It does not guarantee a recommendation-free shopping session. Stores and search services may still show products that match your current query or other context, and advertisements may continue to appear even after personalization is disabled.
| Control point | What the documented example covers | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Google Shopping | Google Shopping Help describes a Personalized Recommendations setting in Search services; listings can also use current search terms. | That every listing is personalized, that all listings stop when the setting changes, or that stored account activity is automatically paused or deleted. |
| Google Search account | Search personalization settings address personalization of Google Search results. | That contextual signals such as location, language, device, and the query no longer affect results, or that account activity is deleted. |
| Retailer website | Nordstrom’s example can limit personalized shopping experiences and product recommendations for the browser and device in use. | That the website preference also applies to the app or to other retailers. |
| Retailer app | Nordstrom says app settings must be handled separately from its website control. | That one app setting changes the website, browser, or other services. |
| Microsoft Edge activity | Microsoft documents a choice about saving and using Edge browsing activity for Microsoft personalized advertising and experiences, including shopping recommendations. | That the control governs retailer recommendations or erases previously stored information. |
| Amazon About You | Amazon describes reviewing and editing listed inputs used for personalization. | That About You is a universal recommendations-off switch. |
| Private browsing and browser history | The FTC says private browsing may clear local history after a session; it recommends reviewing privacy settings and deleting cookies or history when appropriate. | That websites cannot see activity, or that browser cleanup changes every account’s stored activity. |
Troubleshoot recommendations that keep appearing
The recommendations are on a retailer’s app
Check the app’s privacy or personalization controls directly. A preference set on a retailer’s website may not apply to the app; Nordstrom’s documented controls illustrate this separation.
The recommendations appear in shopping search listings
Review the search service’s shopping-personalization setting, then consider whether the listing simply matches the current query. Google says Shopping listings can use current search terms, so relevant results can remain even when personalized recommendations are limited.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
You changed a setting but still see ads
Ads can still appear after personalization is disabled. Check whether the control covers advertising or only a particular kind of recommendation, and review participating-advertiser opt-out tools as the FTC advises. Do not infer from the continued presence of an ad alone that a specific setting failed; the ad may be contextual or governed by another service.
You want old activity removed
Look for the provider’s separate activity-management or deletion options. Google’s Search personalization controls do not automatically pause or delete stored account activity, and an opt-out should not be treated as an erasure request unless its terms explicitly say that it deletes data.
The same suggestions appear on another device
Check the scope of the original preference. Some controls are tied to a browser and device, while others concern an account or app. Repeat the relevant check on each device, browser, or app, and verify whether you are signed into the account whose setting you changed.
A practical privacy checklist before your next shopping session
- Identify whether the products are suggested by a retailer, a search service, or an ad platform.
- Use the specific provider’s personalization control and read its scope before saving the change.
- Check the website and app independently when the retailer distinguishes them.
- Manage or delete historical account activity separately if that is part of your goal.
- Use browser history, cookies, and private browsing for their local-browser purposes, not as guarantees against websites seeing activity.
- Expect relevant contextual results and some ads to remain.
- Repeat the review across the other accounts, browsers, apps, and devices you use to shop.
The FTC’s consumer guidance, Google’s Shopping and Search help pages, Microsoft Support’s Edge explanation, and the retailer pages describe provider-specific controls. Their instructions and menu labels can change, and account availability, geography, or interface version may affect what you see. Use each provider’s current explanation to confirm the setting’s reach rather than treating any one opt-out as a universal guarantee.
