Instagram has two separate privacy switches for Direct messages: Activity Status controls whether people can see that you are online or when you were last active, while read receipts control whether a sender sees that you have read a message. They must be changed independently.
To hide your presence, open Instagram settings and go to Messages and story replies → Show activity status, then switch it off. To stop read indicators in every conversation, use account settings → Messages and story replies → Show read receipts and turn that control off. Meta also supports read-receipt controls for individual chats.

The two controls answer different privacy concerns. You can hide your online presence but leave read receipts enabled, hide read receipts while continuing to show when you are active, or turn off both. The setting names and placement can vary by app version, browser, account, or region, so look for the named controls rather than relying on an identical screen.
What the two Instagram privacy controls actually hide
Activity Status and read receipts answer different questions. Activity Status answers, “Are you online, or when were you last active?” A read receipt answers, “Have you opened and read this message?” Disabling one does not automatically disable the other.

Instagram’s Help Center describes Activity Status as visible to people you follow and people you message when the feature is enabled. Meta’s March 4, 2024 Instagram DM announcement describes read receipts as a way to let others know that a message has been read and adds both all-chat and chat-specific controls.
These are presence and message-state signals, not delivery or blocking controls. Turning either switch off does not stop another person from sending you a Direct message, remove the conversation, or make your account invisible. It only changes the particular information Instagram shares through that feature.
Turn off Instagram Activity Status
Use this setting when you do not want eligible contacts to see that you are currently online or when you last used Instagram.

- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Open the menu, then choose Settings or Settings and activity, depending on the current app label.
- Select Messages and story replies.
- Tap Show activity status.
- Switch the control off.
The labels can move as Instagram redesigns its settings, but the documented destination is the Messages and story replies section. If you do not see the option immediately, use the settings search field for “activity status.” Search for the setting inside Instagram, not in your phone’s general notification settings.
On Instagram.com from a computer
- Sign in to Instagram.com.
- Open the More menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Messages and story replies.
- Select Show activity status and turn it off.
Instagram’s Help Center documents both app and computer variants. The wording and placement may differ between a browser and the mobile app, so follow the setting name rather than relying on the position of a particular switch. If you use more than one account, check the profile identity before changing the control; settings are tied to the account you are editing.
What changes when Activity Status is off
People who would otherwise qualify to see your status will no longer be shown that online or recent-activity signal. The change is reciprocal: Instagram says you also lose the ability to see whether the relevant accounts are active, were active recently, or are active in the same chat as you.
Instagram’s Help Center explains this reciprocal behavior in its Activity Status guidance. In practical terms, there is no supported mode that hides your status from everyone while allowing you to continue viewing everyone else’s status. The setting applies to what you can share and what you can see.
The audience is not every Instagram account automatically. Instagram identifies people you follow and people you message as the relevant groups, and normal account relationships and each person’s own Activity Status setting affect what is visible. Therefore, a contact not seeing your indicator does not by itself prove that your switch is off.

Turn off read receipts for all Instagram chats
Read receipts are independent of Activity Status. You can appear offline while still sending a read indication, or leave Activity Status on while suppressing read indications. Choose this control when the “Seen” state on Direct messages is the signal you want to remove.
- Open Instagram’s account settings.
- Choose Messages and story replies.
- Open Show read receipts.
- Switch the control off for the account-wide setting.
Meta documented this global route in its March 4, 2024 Instagram DM update. The setting is intended to apply across conversations rather than requiring you to change every thread one by one. Verify that the control is changed on the account you actually use for the sensitive conversation.
Use read-receipt controls for one chat
Meta also says Instagram supports changing read receipts for specific chats. To look for that control, open the relevant Direct conversation and inspect its conversation information, message settings, or privacy controls. The exact taps are not fixed in the official announcement, and Instagram can present different labels or layouts by app version, device, account, or region.

A missing per-chat control is not evidence that Activity Status has been disabled; these are separate features.
Use a chat-specific control when one conversation needs different treatment from the rest. For example, you may leave the account-wide behavior unchanged while suppressing the read signal in a particular conversation, if that chat presents the option. The existence of the feature is documented, but Meta has not published one universal sequence of taps that applies to every account.
How to choose the right setting

For example, someone who wants to answer messages later without advertising that they are online should disable Activity Status and read receipts. Someone who only wants to stop a particular conversation from displaying a read state can leave Activity Status unchanged and use the chat-specific control if Instagram provides it for that account.
If your concern is being watched for online availability, changing only read receipts will not solve it. Conversely, an offline-looking profile can still generate a read indication if read receipts remain enabled. Decide which signal matters before opening the message.

Can you read an Instagram message without showing “Seen”?
The supported way to prevent a read indication is to disable read receipts before opening the conversation, using the account-wide or available chat-specific control. Because Activity Status and read receipts are separate, turning off your online status alone does not guarantee that a sender will be prevented from seeing a read state.

Instagram’s official material does not establish a universal, device-independent workaround involving notifications, offline mode, message previews, or other tricks. Such methods can behave differently after synchronization and are not a substitute for the read-receipt setting. If the read state matters, change the relevant control first and verify the setting in the chat or account settings.
Changing a control after a message has already been opened may not erase a state that was previously displayed. Meta’s announcement establishes the controls but does not specify how every existing read state is handled retroactively, so treat the setting as preparation for future reading rather than a guaranteed way to retract an earlier indication.
Why your menus may not match these steps
Instagram changes navigation and labels regularly. The official Activity Status help page includes app and computer instructions, while Meta’s read-receipt announcement gives the global settings route but does not publish a complete matrix of device, account, and regional availability for every per-chat control.
- App versus browser: The browser path begins from the More menu; the mobile path begins from your profile menu.
- Account interface: Some accounts show “Settings,” while others use “Settings and activity.”
- Version differences: A newly updated app may place privacy controls under a reorganized Messages and story replies section.
- Regional or staged availability: A chat-specific read-receipt switch may not appear for every account at the same time.
- Multiple accounts: Settings are account-specific. Changing the control while signed into one account does not change another account on the same device.
- Different surfaces: A control visible in the app may be harder to locate in a browser, or vice versa.
When a label is missing, confirm that you are in the account’s own settings rather than the phone’s notification settings. Instagram’s operating-system notification controls govern alerts; they do not replace the in-app Activity Status or read-receipt controls.
Troubleshoot an Activity Status change
The switch is on, but someone still cannot see your status
Activity Status is not a promise that every Instagram user can see your presence. The documented audience is people you follow and people you message, and visibility also depends on their own Activity Status setting and Instagram’s normal account relationships. Ask the other person to check whether they have disabled their own Activity Status; disabling theirs also prevents them from viewing others’ status.
The switch does not appear
- Open the profile menu and enter the account settings, not the phone’s system settings.
- Look under Messages and story replies.
- Use Instagram’s settings search for “activity status.”
- Check Instagram.com if the option is absent in the app, or check the app if it is absent in the browser.
- Confirm you are editing the intended Instagram account.
- Reopen the settings after Instagram updates or changes account interfaces.
Instagram’s own help material is the authority for the current labels. If the interface still differs, the account may be receiving a different layout or the feature may be temporarily unavailable.
You turned Activity Status off and now cannot see anyone else’s
That result is expected, not a malfunction. The reciprocal restriction is part of Instagram’s design. Turn the switch back on only if you want to regain the ability to view eligible accounts’ activity indicators.
Troubleshoot read receipts
A sender still sees a read indication
First confirm that you changed Show read receipts, not Show activity status. Then check whether you changed the global control or only a particular chat. A chat-specific setting can leave other conversations unchanged, while a global setting is intended to cover all chats.

Also check which account is signed in and whether the conversation was opened before the change. Instagram’s official announcement establishes the controls, but it does not specify how every existing read state is retroactively handled. Treat the switch as controlling future read signaling rather than assuming it can erase a state already displayed.
The per-chat option is missing
Meta confirms that specific-chat controls exist, but does not document one universal tap sequence or a current availability list for every device and region. Open the conversation’s information or privacy controls and look for a read-receipt setting. If none appears, use the account-wide control and keep Instagram updated. Do not substitute Activity Status for the missing read-receipt control.
Read receipts behave differently across devices
Check the setting from the device or browser where you normally use the affected account. Instagram can present different navigation and rollout states across app versions and account surfaces. Make sure each session is signed into the same account before comparing results.

Return to the exact conversation and inspect its own controls. A global setting and a chat-specific setting can coexist, so one may not override the other in the way you expect. If the account-wide option is off but a chat appears to have its own setting, review both. Avoid assuming that a changed notification preference controls read receipts.
Turning the settings back on
Both controls are reversible. Return to Messages and story replies, open Show activity status or Show read receipts, and switch the relevant control on. For a chat-specific read-receipt setting, reopen that conversation’s information or privacy controls and restore its previous state if the option is available.
Re-enabling Activity Status restores your ability to see eligible accounts’ activity indicators as well as allowing them to see yours, subject to the normal Instagram relationship and privacy conditions. Re-enabling read receipts restores the read signal for the scope governed by that switch; it does not change the separate Activity Status setting.

- Decide whether you need to hide online presence, read status, or both.
- Open Instagram settings and verify the account currently selected.
- Turn off Show activity status if you do not want online or recent-activity signals shared.
- Turn off account-wide Show read receipts, or inspect the specific chat for its own control.
- Return to the conversation and confirm that the intended setting is still disabled.
- Remember the reciprocal Activity Status trade-off: you will not see other eligible accounts’ activity indicators while yours is off.
These controls are privacy choices, not message-delivery controls. They do not prevent someone from sending a Direct message, and they do not make the account invisible. They determine whether Instagram shares the specific online-presence and message-read signals covered by the settings.

Meta describes read receipts as a convenience that lets others know a message has been read. The announcement does not establish a single per-chat navigation sequence that applies to every device, account, and region. That is why the safest instruction for an individual conversation is to open its own information or privacy controls and use the read-receipt option if Instagram presents it, rather than following an invented universal tap path.
