Mark a small set of shots with one club, check your balance, posture and distance from the ball, and use a two-tee gate for short swings. The strike pattern—not a guess about your swing—should guide what you try next.
Find your usual strike pattern first
Use one mid-iron and observe a small set of shots. Note whether contact clusters toward the heel, toe, top or bottom of the face. A single mishit is not enough to diagnose a repeated pattern. Face-marking methods can help make the contact location visible; a tee-based gate can also provide immediate feedback. The PGA of America’s iron-consistency tip describes tee-based feedback, while its page was not directly accessible; use that source only for this narrow drill idea.

Keep the first practice round observational. If the pattern changes from shot to shot, avoid making a major swing or equipment change based on one result.

Check setup and balance before changing your swing
GOLF Top 100 Teacher Kellie Stenzel identifies posture and balance as important checks for centered contact. As a coaching heuristic, standing too close can contribute to heel-side contact, while standing too far away can contribute to toe-side contact. These are starting points to inspect, not universal explanations for every golfer.

- Check that you feel balanced rather than reaching or crowding the ball.
- Review your posture and spacing, then make just one small adjustment and observe whether the strike pattern changes.
- Try a feet-together balance drill with gentle swings if balance is difficult to maintain.
Stenzel also notes that very over-the-top or very inside-to-out paths may make centered contact harder, associating those patterns with toe- and heel-side strikes respectively. Treat that as instructor guidance rather than a diagnosis from the face mark alone. Her full instruction is available in 10 ways to hit the center of the clubface with more consistency.
Use a two-tee gate for controlled contact practice
The gate gives you a clear task: swing the clubhead through without hitting either tee. It trains awareness and clearance; it does not guarantee that a particular swing fault will be corrected.

- Set a ball on the ground and place a tee on each side of it, leaving enough room for the clubhead to pass through without touching either tee.
- Begin with short, controlled swings. Pay attention to whether the club clears both tees and where it contacts the ball.
- If you can clear the gate reliably, gradually lengthen the swing. If you strike a tee, return to shorter swings and adjust the spacing only as needed to make a manageable gate.
- Keep noting face contact. Clearing the tees is useful feedback, but it is not a substitute for checking whether your strike is moving toward the center.
Ordinary tees are enough for this drill. Alignment sticks are optional if you want a visual reference for alignment, path or an impact-position rehearsal; they are not required for the basic contact gate.

In a drill reported by Zephyr Melton, GOLF Teacher to Watch Jake Thurm uses two alignment sticks to illustrate shaft lean at address and impact, with the hands and hips forward at impact. Thurm’s point is that impact is not simply a copy of address: “Nobody playing elite-level golf will look the same at impact as they do at address.” This is an instruction cue, not proof that shaft lean is the cause of every off-center strike. Why an off-center iron strike can change the result
Impact location can induce clubhead rotation during the collision. In TrackMan’s 2017 explanation, an iron toe-strike example shows the face opening by 1–2 degrees from first touch to ball separation. That is a technical example within TrackMan’s measurement framework, not a prediction that every toe strike will produce the same result or shot shape. Read its club data definitions for the measurement context.

- Ask an instructor to assess motion, balance and delivery when you need help understanding what is producing the pattern.
- Ask a qualified fitter to assess equipment when you suspect the clubs may not suit you. Stenzel lists club length, lie and weight among fitting factors. A fitting is an assessment, not a guaranteed fix for off-center contact.
Keep those paths distinct: swing instruction evaluates how you move the club; fitting evaluates the club’s suitability. Neither should be inferred from one mishit alone.
