What you need before installing
BigChadGuys Plus (BCG+) is a Fabric modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. Every player should use Minecraft 1.20.1, Fabric, and the same BCG+ release as the server. A client on a different Minecraft version, a different loader, or a different pack release can fail to connect even when the server itself starts normally.

- Java 17 or newer. The project FAQ specifically recommends Java 17.0.1 on macOS.
- The BCG+ client installation for each player, preferably made with ATLauncher or Prism Launcher. The FAQ warns that the CurseForge launcher can corrupt an instance during updates and that the FTB Launcher may omit resources that are not hosted on CurseForge.
- At least 4 GB of memory reserved for the dedicated server, with more for larger groups.
- Router access for traditional port forwarding, or an account and software for a tunnel if router access is unavailable.
The server process needs memory in addition to the operating system, the launcher, and any other applications running on the machine. Do not assign every gigabyte in the computer to Java; leave enough for the host system to remain responsive.
Download the correct BCG+ server pack
Use the dedicated Server Files archive
Open the BigChadGuys Plus project on CurseForge, go to Files, open the additional files for the release you intend to run, and choose the entry labeled Server Files. The ordinary BigChadGuys Plus ZIP is the client download, not the dedicated server package. Downloading the client archive is the most common cause of a server folder that is missing launch files or libraries.

The files page listed BCG+ 2.16.6 and a corresponding server pack on October 14, 2026. Treat that number as a point-in-time compatibility target rather than a permanent version: the project can publish a newer release, and the server and clients must move to the same release together.
Verify the archive before you configure anything
Extract the archive into a new, dedicated folder. Do not mix it with another modpack or an older BCG+ installation. A correct server archive should include the following items:

config,mods,libraries, andresourcepacksfolders.fabric-server-launch.jarandserver.jar.start.batfor Windows andstart.shfor macOS or Linux.
If those folders, JAR files, and scripts are not present, stop and download the release’s Server Files entry again. Do not try to turn the client ZIP into a server by copying random folders from another installation; the dedicated archive supplies the server-side layout expected by the launch scripts.
How much RAM does a BCG+ server need?
The project FAQ gives a planning rule of 4 GB minimum for a dedicated server, then 1 GB for each player beyond the first two. The CurseForge project description separately recommends 6–8 GB for “sublime performance.” These are project recommendations, not published benchmark guarantees, and actual use varies with player activity, loaded areas, and the rest of the computer’s workload.

Choose the closest value that your machine can provide without starving the operating system. A six-player server assigned 8 GB still needs additional host memory for Windows, macOS, Linux, backups, and other programs. If the machine has only 8 GB total, it is not a practical 8 GB Java-server machine.
Set up a self-hosted server
1. Extract into an isolated folder
Create a folder used only by this BCG+ instance and extract the Server Files ZIP there. Keeping one server per folder prevents an older config directory, mod, or library from silently replacing the files belonging to the current release. The folder can live on an internal drive with enough free space for the pack and the world data; no fixed disk-size requirement is published.

2. Check Java before the first launch
Install Java 17 or newer and make sure the launch scripts can find it. On macOS, the FAQ’s specific recommendation is Java 17.0.1. If the computer has several Java installations, the script may select an older one unless the system’s Java association or the script’s Java path is corrected. A Java-version error at startup is a prerequisite problem, not a modpack configuration problem.
3. Set the memory ceiling in the launch script
Open start.bat on Windows or start.sh on macOS/Linux in a plain-text editor. Find the Java option beginning with -Xmx and set it to the amount you have chosen. The FAQ gives these examples:

Change the maximum value rather than deleting the rest of the script. The supplied script contains the launch details for the Fabric server; replacing it with a generic Minecraft command can omit required arguments or libraries. Save the file without changing its extension.
4. Start the server
Run the platform-appropriate script from the server folder: double-click start.bat on Windows, or execute start.sh on macOS/Linux using the normal shell method for that file. Keep the terminal or console open so you can see startup errors and the eventual ready state. The first launch creates additional files, including the EULA file and the world directory, so it may take longer than later starts.
5. Accept the EULA when the first run stops
If the process closes or stops because the EULA has not been accepted, close the server window, open eula.txt in the new server folder, read the Minecraft terms, and change the acceptance setting as instructed in that file. Save it, then run the same start script again. The server will not complete startup until that acceptance is recorded.
6. Keep the folder intact after a successful start
Do not remove libraries, resourcepacks, the Fabric launcher JAR, or the generated configuration files to “clean up” the installation. The server pack is assembled as a set. Back up the world and configuration before upgrading BCG+, and make upgrades in a separate copy first so that a failed update does not destroy the working instance.

Let other people connect
Players on the same home network
People connected to the same Wi-Fi or wired LAN can connect without an Internet-facing port-forwarding rule. They still need the matching 1.20.1 Fabric client and the identical BCG+ release. Use the host computer’s local address when the game asks for a server address.
Players outside your home network: port forwarding
For Internet players, configure port forwarding on the router so incoming Minecraft traffic reaches the computer running the server. The exact menu names vary by router, so use its port-forwarding or virtual-server screen and direct the Minecraft server port to the host computer’s local address. Give the host a stable local address where possible; otherwise, a router lease change can make an existing rule point at the wrong computer.

Port forwarding exposes the local server to the Internet; it does not add memory, CPU capacity, or bandwidth. Keep the server software and operating system updated, and forward only the required game port rather than exposing unrelated services.
If you cannot change the router: tunneling
The project FAQ names ngrok and Cloudflare Zero Trust as alternatives when router access is unavailable. A tunnel runs software on the host and provides a public connection that is carried back to the local server. Account, installation, and address requirements differ between services, so follow the selected provider’s current setup instructions.
Tunneling and port forwarding solve the same reachability problem by different means. A tunnel is not a performance upgrade: it can add another network hop and may impose account or service limits. Choose it because you cannot configure the router, not because it is expected to make the server run faster.
Run BCG+ on managed Minecraft hosting
Upload the complete server pack
A managed host removes the need to keep your own computer and home Internet connection online. After creating the server, use the provider’s FTP tool to upload the extracted folders, JARs, scripts, and other files from the Server Files archive. Preserve the same directory structure; uploading only mods and config is not enough when the pack also requires its libraries and Fabric launcher.

Select the custom Fabric launch JAR
Configure the host to launch the custom Fabric JAR rather than a vanilla server profile. The FAQ’s BisectHosting example renames fabric-server-launch.jar to customjava17.jar, then selects that filename in the host’s custom-JAR menu. Other providers use different names, menus, or startup settings, so treat this as an example of the process, not a universal label.
After selecting the JAR, set the host’s memory allocation to match the BCG+ guidance and start the server. Read the provider console for the same first-run EULA prompt that appears during self-hosting. If the host offers an automated modpack installer, verify that it installs this exact BCG+ release and the dedicated server files; a generic Fabric profile is not equivalent to the pack’s server archive.
Project-page promotion
The official CurseForge project page displays BisectHosting and the code BIGCHADGUYS for 25% off the first month. That is a current project-page promotion, not a guaranteed permanent price or universal regional offer. Check the provider’s terms, eligibility, renewal price, and regional availability before relying on the discount.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?

Self-host when you have suitable hardware, router access, and the time to maintain Java, networking, and backups. Choose managed hosting when continuous availability and simpler infrastructure matter more than direct control and a recurring fee.
Troubleshoot the common setup failures
The download has no start scripts or Fabric JAR
You probably downloaded the normal client ZIP. Return to the release’s additional files and select Server Files. Do not rename a client launcher and expect it to become a dedicated server.
The script reports an unsupported Java version
Install Java 17 or newer and ensure the script resolves that installation. On macOS, use the FAQ’s Java 17.0.1 recommendation. If multiple Java versions are installed, correct the system association or the script’s Java path before changing mod files.

The server exits immediately on first run
Check for the EULA message. If eula.txt was created, accept the terms in that file and start the script again. If no EULA file appears, read the console for the Java version, missing-file, or permission error instead of repeatedly launching the script.
Startup fails with memory errors or the computer becomes unusable
Lower or raise -Xmx only within the memory your computer can spare. Start at 4 GB for a small group, use 6 GB for the four-player example, and 8 GB for the six-player example or the project’s upper performance guidance. Leave operating-system memory available; allocating the machine’s entire RAM to Java can cause the host itself to swap or freeze.

First determine whether they are on the same LAN. LAN players do not need port forwarding. Internet players do: verify the router rule targets the current host computer, the server process is running, and any host firewall permits the server. If you cannot edit the router, use a configured ngrok or Cloudflare Zero Trust tunnel instead.
The client cannot join after the server starts
Compare all three compatibility points: Minecraft 1.20.1, Fabric, and the exact BCG+ release. A server running 2.16.6 is not a match for a client still on another pack release. Also make sure the client launcher did not omit non-CurseForge resources; the FAQ specifically flags that risk with the FTB Launcher.
A managed host starts vanilla Minecraft instead
The provider is likely launching its default profile rather than the uploaded Fabric server. Select the custom Fabric JAR in the panel. In the FAQ’s BisectHosting example, that means renaming fabric-server-launch.jar to customjava17.jar and choosing it from the custom-JAR menu. Other hosts may require a different filename or setting.

- Server and every client use Minecraft 1.20.1, Fabric, and one identical BCG+ release.
- The downloaded archive is labeled Server Files, not the client ZIP.

How the setup fits together
The reliable order is deliberate: obtain the release-specific Server Files archive, verify its contents, install Java, set memory, launch once, accept the EULA, and only then configure outside access. Version matching prevents client errors; the dedicated archive supplies the server’s Fabric files; adequate memory prevents avoidable crashes; and port forwarding or tunneling determines who can reach a server that is already running. Changing the network method cannot compensate for a missing library or an incompatible client, so troubleshoot those layers separately.
