For a reliable Create: Arcane Engineering server, use the dedicated CAEServer1.9.zip server pack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 and Forge, run it with Java 17, allocate about 8 GB of memory, and make every player install the identical pack release. Self-hosting gives you complete control but requires networking and maintenance; managed hosting is easier because installation, backups, and support are handled for you.

The current official pack release is CAE 1.9.3, published November 8, 2023. CurseForge showed 724,245 downloads when checked on October 14, 2026. The pack combines Create-style machines and automation with magic, exploration, quests, custom recipes, and two progression tracks that eventually depend on one another.

Create: Arcane Engineering is a Forge modpack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2. Its engineering side centers on Create, PneumaticCraft, and Thermal Expansion, while its arcane and exploration content includes Forbidden & Arcanus, Ars Nouveau, ruins, quests, and custom recipes. Download the server pack rather than the normal client profile or client manifest. The server archive contains the server-side mods and configuration needed for a dedicated instance; a client download is not, by itself, a runnable server.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Both approaches can run the same pack. The practical difference is who owns the operating system, Java installation, network exposure, backups, and day-to-day troubleshooting.
Self-hosting
- Control: You choose the hardware, operating system, Java flags, backups, mods, and update schedule.
- Setup effort: You must install Java and Forge, accept the EULA, extract the correct archive, configure memory, forward a router port, and maintain firewall rules.
- Ongoing work: You are responsible for backups, updates, crash recovery, security patches, and diagnosing lag.
- Cost profile: There is no managed-server subscription, but the computer must remain available and consume your own resources and bandwidth.
- Best fit: An operator who wants complete control and is comfortable maintaining a Java server.
Managed hosting
- Setup effort: Providers commonly offer a one-click or assisted CurseForge installation, with Forge 1.18.2 and Java 17 selected for you.
- Maintenance: Hosting panels generally simplify file management, restarts, backups, and support, although you still control pack versions and world decisions.
- Capacity planning: You select a memory tier. One provider documents 6 GB for two to four friends and 8 GB for five to ten players, while the pack author recommends 8 GB.
- Trade-offs: You pay a recurring fee and accept the provider’s resource limits, region, policies, and outage risk.
- Best fit: A group that values quick deployment, automated administration, and support over machine-level control.
Provider offers and availability change. For example, one hosting page documents a free seven-day 8 GB trial, while another provider’s listing reported that new servers were paused when it was crawled. Check the current price, location, backup policy, CPU allocation, player limits, and cancellation terms before ordering. A hosting company is not automatically affiliated with Mojang or the pack’s author.

The pack author’s guidance is 8 GB recommended and 4 GB minimum. A host’s sizing guidance puts 6 GB at two to four friends and 8 GB at five to ten players. Those host figures are provider recommendations, not a universal performance benchmark: world size, exploration distance, automation, view distance, and extra client or server mods all affect actual use.

Do not assign every gigabyte in the machine to Minecraft. Leave headroom for Java itself, the operating system, file caching, and any monitoring or backup process. Start at the recommended tier, watch memory use and tick performance during real play, and increase resources if your world, player count, or mod additions grow.
Self-hosting: complete setup
1. Prepare a clean server directory
Create a new folder dedicated to this world, such as CreateArcaneServer. Avoid placing it inside an existing vanilla or unrelated modded server directory. A clean location makes backups, updates, and rollback straightforward.

2. Download the dedicated server archive
- Open the pack’s Files page on CurseForge.
- Choose the file named
CAEServer1.9.ziplisted for Minecraft 1.18.2 and Forge. - Save the archive in the new server folder and extract it there.
Do not substitute the client manifest. The client package is intended for launchers and can contain files that are inappropriate for a dedicated server.
3. Install and verify Java 17
Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime on the computer that will run the server. Open a terminal or command prompt in the server environment and run:
java -versionThe output should identify Java 17. If it reports an older release, install Java 17 or correct the system path before proceeding. Using the wrong Java version is a common cause of an immediate startup failure.
4. Install Forge if the archive has not already done so
Inspect the extracted files. If the server pack does not include an installed loader, place the Forge installer in the server directory and run:
java -jar forge-installer.jar --installServerUse the Forge installer intended for Minecraft 1.18.2. Let the installer finish before attempting a first launch.

5. Start once and accept the EULA
Launch the generated Forge server once. It will normally stop after creating initial files and an eula.txt file. Open that file, change the setting to:
eula=trueSave it and start the server again. You must accept Mojang’s EULA to run the server. Use the Forge-generated launch script or command supplied by the installed server files rather than inventing a different jar name.
6. Set memory deliberately
Configure the launch script or Java arguments with a maximum heap appropriate to your plan. The pack author’s target is 8 GB; a documented six-gigabyte host example uses:
-Xmx6GIf you start at 4 GB, treat it as a minimum rather than a promise of smooth performance. Keep unused system memory available, and change the allocation only when the server is stopped.
7. Complete the first boot
Forge must register a large number of mods, and the first world-generation work can take several minutes. Watch the console for a successful “Done” message and avoid repeatedly killing and restarting the process while it is still building caches. Repeated interruptions can leave confusing partial logs and make diagnosis harder.

8. Configure the network
- Give the server computer a stable local address, either with a reserved DHCP lease or a static configuration.
- Forward TCP port 25565 on the router to that local address.
- Allow the Java server through the computer’s firewall for the same port.
- Test from outside the home network, then share the public address and port with your players.
If friends on the internet cannot connect while local players can, check the router’s destination address, the firewall rule, and whether your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT. Do not expose unrelated administration ports.
9. Create an operator and backup routine
Once connected, grant operator privileges only to trusted administrators. Stop the server cleanly before copying the world directory. Keep at least one backup from before every pack, Forge, or configuration update, and store a copy away from the machine that runs the server.
10. Test with one player before inviting everyone
Connect locally first, then test from an external network. Confirm that the player can join, load a new area, open machines, and complete a quest. A short private test catches version, port, and memory problems before a group session.
Client setup and version synchronization
Every player must install the exact same Create: Arcane Engineering release as the server. For this release, that means CAE 1.9.3 on Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 with Forge. A newer or older pack profile can be refused during login, disconnect with a missing-mod error, or allow entry while omitting content that the server expects.
- Install a Java Edition launcher that supports Forge profiles.
- Install the CAE 1.9.3 client profile from the pack’s distribution page.
- Launch it once in single-player so the launcher creates its files.
- Confirm the Minecraft, Forge, and pack versions match the server exactly.
- Use the server’s address and TCP port 25565 to connect.
Keep the server and client copies pinned to the same release. Before changing versions, stop the server and make a complete world backup. Update the server first, then distribute the same client profile to everyone. Do not assume that a minor-looking pack update is compatible with an existing world.

Client-only additions
Shaders, HUD overlays, and many texture or visual enhancements belong on clients, not on a dedicated server. If adding one causes the server to fail during startup, remove it from the server’s mods folder and keep it only in the player’s client profile when the mod documentation identifies it as client-only. Never copy an entire personal client folder onto the server without checking each mod.
First-world performance and operational habits
Pre-generate exploration areas
Exploration-heavy packs can generate new terrain while several players travel in different directions. Pre-generating the area your group expects to use before the public launch can reduce first-visit generation spikes. This is an operational precaution, not a measured performance guarantee; choose a radius that fits your storage and backup capacity.

When memory or tick time is tight, reduce server view or simulation distance before adding random performance mods. Encourage players to establish bases within a practical travel area, especially during the first sessions when the world is generating new chunks.
Read the logs before changing files
Save the console output and the latest crash report after every failure. The first clear error is usually more useful than the final shutdown line. Change one thing at a time, restart, and record whether the result changed.
Troubleshooting checklist
The server exits immediately
- Run
java -versionand confirm Java 17. - Check that you downloaded
CAEServer1.9.zip, not the client manifest. - Verify Forge was installed for Minecraft 1.18.2.
- Read the first error in the log rather than the final “server stopped” message.
Players receive missing-mod or incompatible-version errors
- Compare the server’s pack release with each player’s launcher profile.
- Make sure everyone is on CAE 1.9.3, Minecraft 1.18.2, and the matching Forge build supplied by the pack.
- Remove client-only shaders, HUD, or visual mods from the server.
- After correcting files, restart the server and have the player reconnect with a clean launcher instance.
The server runs out of memory or stalls
- Start at no less than the pack author’s 4 GB minimum; target 8 GB for a small group.
- Leave system headroom instead of allocating all physical RAM to Java.
- Reduce simultaneous exploration and consider pre-generating nearby terrain.
- Increase the memory tier when player count, world size, or added mods grows.
Friends cannot connect
- Confirm the server process is running and listening on TCP 25565.
- Recheck router forwarding to the server computer’s current local address.
- Allow Java through the operating-system firewall.
- Test from an external network; a local test alone does not prove internet access.
A world update caused crashes or missing content
- Stop immediately and restore the pre-update backup.
- Pin both server and clients to the last known-good pack version.
- Test the new release on a copy of the world before making it the live world.
Using a managed host
A managed host removes most router and operating-system work. The usual workflow is:
- Choose a plan with at least 6 GB for a very small group, or 8 GB when following the pack recommendation or supporting five to ten players.
- Select Minecraft 1.18.2, Forge, and the Create: Arcane Engineering pack in the provider’s installer.
- Confirm that the panel installs the dedicated server files rather than only a client profile.
- Start the instance, accept the EULA in the panel if required, and wait for the first Forge boot to complete.
- Enable scheduled backups and note where downloadable backups are stored.
- Give every player the exact server pack version and connection address.
Managed hosting is attractive when nobody wants to configure port forwarding or maintain a machine. It does not remove the need for version discipline: a one-click installer can still deploy the wrong release, and a provider’s automatic update can change a live world unless you disable or schedule it. Verify resource limits, CPU policy, storage, backup retention, support scope, data-center region, and current pricing before committing.
Updating without losing the world
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server normally.
- Copy the complete world and configuration directories to a separate backup location.
- Record the current pack, Minecraft, Forge, Java, and any manually added server mods.
- Install the new server files in a separate directory or staging instance.
- Test the backup copy with the matching client release.
- Only after a successful test, switch the live server and distribute the same client profile.
Never overwrite your only working copy during an update. Keep the previous server directory until the new release has survived a real play session.
Which route should you choose?
Choose self-hosting if you already have a reliable always-on computer, can forward TCP 25565, and want control over files, Java settings, backups, and customizations. Choose managed hosting if setup speed, support, automatic administration, and a predictable online address matter more than machine-level control. Whichever route you use, the non-negotiables are the dedicated server archive, Java 17, adequate memory, a completed EULA, and identical client and server pack versions.
