V Rising supports two technical modes documented by Stunlock Studios: a game-client host for a private or LAN session, and a standalone V Rising Dedicated Server process. A rented server runs that same kind of standalone process on a provider’s infrastructure. The differences are operational rather than purely in-game.

Client or LAN hosting
Client hosting is the quickest way to play together. You create a private or LAN session through the normal game flow, invite the other players, and play while your session is active. The arrangement is tied to the host’s client: if that player exits, the shared world is no longer available to the group. It is a poor fit for a world that friends should visit while the owner is away, but it avoids installing, updating, and exposing a separate server process.

Self-hosting the dedicated server
A dedicated process runs independently of the game client. You can leave it running while nobody is playing, restart it when required, and keep its save and configuration files under your control. The trade-off is responsibility: the owner must install the tool, keep the machine online, configure network access, apply updates, protect the files, and recover from mistakes.
Renting a managed server
Stunlock Studios’ official hosting article says, “You can rent and manage your server through POCKETHOST.” The article describes management functions including status, basic settings, logs, configuration files, restart, update, and permission controls. A managed service can be the simplest persistent option, but the exact price, region, player-slot policy, backup retention, mod support, and cancellation terms vary. Confirm those details with the provider before paying.

Windows has the clearest documented beginner path because the official workflow uses Steam and a Windows LocalLow data directory. You need a Windows machine that can remain online for the hours you want the world available, administrative access to install the Steam tool, and permission to change the machine’s firewall or router when players connect from outside your home network.
1. Install the dedicated-server tool in Steam
- Open Steam and switch to the Tools section of your library.
- Search for
V Rising Dedicated Serverand install it. This is a separate tool from the normal game client. - Note the installation directory; you will need it to find the executable and the example launch script.
2. Start the actual server process
Open the installation directory and launch VRisingServer.exe. Do not rely on Steam’s Launch button as proof that the server is running: Stunlock’s instructions warn that clicking that button opens documentation rather than starting the server process. When the executable is running, leave its console window open and wait for initialization.
3. Make a working copy of the example start script
The installation includes an example start script. Copy or rename it before editing. The official instructions warn that an update can restore the original example file, which would erase custom changes made directly to it. Use the copy for your server-specific launch settings and give the server a recognizable name either in that script or through the host settings.

4. Start and find the server
- Run your copied script, or launch the executable with the settings you have prepared.
- Wait until the process finishes its startup work.
- Open V Rising’s server list and look for the name you configured.
- If the server is not publicly discoverable, players can connect using the host’s external IP, provided the machine’s firewall and the network router allow the connection.
Keep the process running for as long as you want the world available. Closing the console or shutting down the host machine stops the dedicated server.

5. Protect the initial save and settings
Before changing gameplay rules or applying a major update, stop the server cleanly and copy its save and settings directories to a separate location. A backup on the same disk is useful for quick recovery but is not protection against disk failure, theft, or ransomware; keep an additional copy elsewhere if the world matters.
Where V Rising server settings are stored
V Rising separates hosting options from gameplay options and distinguishes installation defaults from local overrides. Editing the installed defaults is risky because updates can replace them. Put intentional changes in the local settings directory instead.

Keep override files small
Copy only the keys you intend to change into the local override files. A minimal override is easier to review, less likely to preserve an obsolete value, and more likely to inherit new defaults after an update. Keep a dated copy of each working file so you can identify which change caused a problem.
Use a separate persistent path for multiple servers
The -persistentDataPath launch parameter can move the persistent data location. It is recommended when you operate more than one server, because each instance can have its own saves and settings rather than competing for the same directory. Document the path in the start script and back up each instance separately.

Settings worth deciding before inviting players
- Identity: choose a clear server name and, if useful, a description that tells players whether the world is private, PvE, or PvP.
- Access: set a password when the world is for friends only, and set a player limit that matches the group you can actually support.
- World rules: choose PvE or PvP deliberately, then review clan and castle rules before anyone claims territory.
- Progression speed: resource and crafting rates alter the entire pace of a world. Decide whether you want the default experience or a faster, more experimental one.
- Combat and enemies: vampire and enemy modifiers affect difficulty and should be agreed with the group before the first character is created.
- Raids and persistence: schedule raid behavior and save behavior around the hours your players are normally online.
Make the server reachable without giving away the world
Playing on the same machine or local network
For a local test, start the dedicated process and check whether the server appears in the in-game list. Players on the same network may be able to join without an internet-facing address, depending on the network’s discovery and firewall settings. A local test is useful before troubleshooting router access for friends elsewhere.
Allowing friends over the internet
Remote players need a route to the host machine. The operating system firewall must allow the server executable, and the router may need a forwarding rule to the machine running the server. Use the current V Rising documentation and your router’s instructions for the exact protocol and port values; do not guess them from an unrelated game. Share the external IP or the listed server name only with the people who should connect.
Use passwords and limits as part of the design
A password is not a substitute for a firewall, but it prevents casual joins when the server is visible. Combine a password with a sensible player limit and explicit PvE/PvP rules. If the world becomes public, review the description and permissions so new players understand what they are joining.
Operating a persistent world
Updates
Stop the server before applying an update, copy the save and settings directories, then update the dedicated-server tool. Afterward, compare your small override files with the newly installed examples and start the process again. If an update restores the original example script, use your copied script rather than re-editing the vendor file.

Saves and backups
Back up both the world data and the JSON settings. A save without its matching rules can produce an unexpected experience, while settings without the save do not restore progress. Keep at least one backup from before the last update and one known-good backup from earlier in the server’s life. Test that a backup can actually be copied back before you depend on it.

Restarts and planned downtime
Tell players when you intend to stop the process, especially before changing raid schedules or progression rates. A managed panel may expose restart and update controls; a self-hosted machine requires you to stop and start the process yourself through the script or executable.
What hardware and operating system should you use?
No universal current hardware requirement for a dedicated V Rising server is established in the available official material. A community V Rising Wiki guide, crawled in 2026 with no publication date stated, gives the following context: a quad-core processor that requires up to two full cores, up to 16 GB of memory, around 4 GB of memory minimum in its current use, and 5 GB of disk space. Treat those figures as community guidance, not a guarantee for every world, player count, operating-system combination, or future game version.

Windows is generally the simplest beginner route because the official instructions provide a Steam-based installation flow and the Windows LocalLow override path. Linux or Wine can work for experienced administrators, but it adds operating-system, compatibility, service-management, and command-line dependencies that are outside the official beginner path.

A managed service trades unrestricted machine access for a control panel and provider support. Before ordering, check each item in writing:
- Current recurring price: verify the currency, billing interval, renewal price, and any setup charge.
- Location: choose a data-center region close to most players, and confirm that the advertised location is available for the plan you want.
- Player slots: confirm whether the limit is fixed, configurable, or subject to an extra charge.
- Backups: ask how often backups run, how long they are retained, and whether you can download them.
- Controls: confirm access to status, logs, configuration files, restart, update, and permissions if those are important to your group.
- Mod and file support: verify compatibility before building a world around modifications or custom files.
- Cancellation and migration: find out how to cancel, export saves, and retrieve data after the subscription ends.
A provider’s control panel can simplify routine work, but it does not remove the need for passwords, deliberate gameplay settings, and independent backups of a world you care about.

Troubleshooting common beginner problems

That behavior is expected in the official workflow. Open the installation directory and run VRisingServer.exe, or run your copied start script. Confirm that a server process and console window remain active.
The server never appears in the list
First confirm that initialization completed and the process is still running. Check the server name in the host settings, then test locally. If local joining works but remote joining does not, investigate the host firewall and router path rather than changing gameplay JSON files.
Friends cannot connect by external IP
Verify that the machine is online, the server process is running, and the firewall permits it. Check that the router forwards the required game traffic to the correct machine and that you are sharing the current external IP. A local test separates a server configuration problem from an internet-routing problem.
My settings seem to be ignored
Check the filename and JSON syntax, then confirm the file is in the Windows LocalLow override directory rather than only in StreamingAssetsSettings. Stop and restart the server after edits. Remove unrelated keys from the override so an old value is not masking the change you intended.
An update removed my changes
Restore your copied launch script and local override files from backup. Do not make permanent edits only to the original example script or installed defaults; those are the files most likely to be replaced during an update.
The world reverted or a save is missing
Stop the process, identify the correct persistent-data location, and compare it with your dated backups. If you use multiple instances, verify that each launch script points to its intended -persistentDataPath. Restore only after preserving the current files for diagnosis.
A practical beginner decision
- Choose client or LAN hosting if the group plays only when one person is present and you want the least setup.
- Choose self-hosting if the world must stay available, you want direct control of files and processes, and you are comfortable maintaining a machine and network.
- Choose managed rental if persistent availability matters but you would rather use a control panel than administer Windows, firewall rules, updates, and backups yourself.
- Whichever route you choose, set the name, password, player limit, PvE/PvP mode, and progression rules before inviting the group.
- Back up saves and settings before the first major update and keep a recovery copy outside the live server directory.
For most first-time groups, client hosting is the fastest trial. Move to a dedicated process when the host-session limitation becomes annoying; rent a managed server when uptime is important and the recurring service cost is preferable to doing the administration yourself.
