To host Minecraft for PS4 players, use the Bedrock Edition ecosystem: a same-network LAN world, a subscription-based Minecraft Realm, or the official Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS). Realms is the simplest way to keep a world online while the owner is away; LAN is free and immediate for people in one home; BDS provides the most control but requires a supported computer, networking, maintenance, and a reliable way for PS4 clients to connect.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Bedrock servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
Every PS4 participant should link a Microsoft account to their PlayStation Network account, use a compatible Bedrock version, and normally have the applicable PlayStation online multiplayer subscription. Java Edition is not the PS4 client for this cross-platform setup.

PS4 runs the Bedrock Edition version used for cross-platform play with compatible consoles, mobile devices and Windows installations. A Java Edition server cannot be joined by the standard PS4 Bedrock client, so choose Bedrock worlds, Realms or the Bedrock Dedicated Server.
Link each PS4 player’s Microsoft account
On the Minecraft title screen, choose Sign in with a Microsoft account. Scan the displayed QR code or open microsoft.com/link on another device, then enter the code shown by the PS4. Minecraft’s account guidance says this link is required to play with friends on other platforms or join Realms on PlayStation.

Use the Microsoft account that each player intends to keep. Changing accounts later can affect the gamertag friends use for invitations and can make it appear that a player has disappeared from a Realm or friends list.
Use matching Bedrock versions
All participants need compatible Bedrock game versions. Update Minecraft on the PS4 and on the host before troubleshooting invitations or connection errors. A world or server that has been updated may not accept a client that is still on an older release.

Check the console’s online subscription
Console multiplayer generally requires PlayStation Plus or the applicable current PlayStation online multiplayer subscription. The exact requirement can depend on the account, game mode and region, so check the active subscription on every PS4 account before treating a connection failure as a server problem.
Choose the right hosting method
| Route | Best for | Availability | Main requirements | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LAN world | Friends in the same home or local network | The host world must be running | Both devices on the same LAN; Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players enabled | Not an internet-wide persistent server |
| Minecraft Realms | Families and groups wanting managed, always-online hosting | Designed to stay online | Microsoft accounts, Bedrock Edition, a Realm subscription and invitations | Ongoing subscription; plan limits and prices can change |
| Bedrock Dedicated Server | Owners who want independent hosting and configuration control | Available while the host computer and network remain available | Supported Windows or Ubuntu computer, BDS download, configuration and network setup | More setup, maintenance and security responsibility |
The practical decision comes down to persistence, setup effort, control, continuing cost and player-management features. Choose LAN when everyone is physically together. Choose Realms when reliability and ease matter more than server-level control. Choose BDS when you can administer a computer and network and need an independently managed world.

Option 1: keep a world online with Minecraft Realms
Realms is Minecraft’s managed Bedrock hosting option. Minecraft describes it as an “always-online server,” and its Bedrock cross-play support includes PlayStation. The subscription holder creates or uploads the world, while invited players join without purchasing the Realm subscription themselves.
Set up the Realm
- Confirm that the host and every invited PS4 uses Bedrock Edition and a compatible current game version.
- Complete Microsoft-account linking on each PS4 from the title screen. Use the QR-code flow or microsoft.com/link and enter the displayed code.
- From Minecraft, subscribe to the available Bedrock Realms or Realms Plus plan.
- Create a Realm and either generate a new Bedrock world or upload the world you want to use. Uploading is useful when the group has already built a local world, but make a backup before replacing an existing Realm world.
- Invite players using their Xbox/Microsoft gamertags or the share-link option shown by the current Realm interface.
Join from a PS4
- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- Open the Friends or Realms area and select the invitation or Realm listed for the linked Microsoft account.
- Accept the invitation if prompted, then select the Realm to load it.
An invited player does not need to pay for the Realm subscription. The owner does need to keep the subscription active, and the current plan’s player limits and features should be checked on Minecraft’s product page because they can change. If a Realm is missing, verify the linked account, the gamertag used for the invitation, the Bedrock version, privacy settings and the PS4’s online multiplayer subscription before recreating anything.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why Realms is usually the easiest answer
- The host does not have to leave a PS4 or computer running for friends to play.
- Minecraft manages the server service, so you do not need to forward a router port or maintain a server process.
- Invitations and the Realm’s player list provide a simpler boundary than publishing a home IP address.
- You give up low-level server administration and pay an ongoing subscription rather than running the world yourself.
Option 2: host a local LAN world
A LAN world is the quickest no-server option when the PS4 and host are connected to the same local network. It is not a persistent internet server: the host must have the world open, and players outside that network cannot use the LAN listing.
Enable LAN play
- Connect the host device and PS4 to the same home network. Avoid putting one device on a guest network if that network blocks device-to-device traffic.
- On the host, open Minecraft and choose Play.
- Find the target world and select the pencil icon to edit it.
- Open Multiplayer.
- Enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players.
- Start the world.
- On the PS4, open Play, choose Worlds, and select the world marked as LAN.
If both players are Microsoft-account friends and are online, Bedrock may also show a direct friend-join path instead of a LAN listing. That does not change the same-network requirement for the LAN method itself; the friend-join route is a separate Bedrock multiplayer path.

When LAN is the wrong choice
LAN stops being useful when the host leaves, closes the world, loses the local network or needs friends in another location. Do not advertise a LAN address as a replacement for a continuously available Realm or dedicated server.
Option 3: run the official Bedrock Dedicated Server
The Bedrock Dedicated Server is Minecraft’s official server software for hosting a multiplayer Bedrock world independently of the game client. It can run continuously while the host computer and network are operating, but the owner is responsible for installation, updates, access control, backups, firewall rules and connectivity.
Check the host computer first
Minecraft’s current BDS requirements list Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later, Windows Server 2016 or later, or Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later on Linux. The published system requirements list 4 GB of RAM. That is the stated requirement, not a promise that every large world or player group will perform well with only 4 GB; larger worlds and more simultaneous players can need additional resources.
- Use a machine that can remain powered and connected for the hours players expect to join.
- Install updates and security fixes for the operating system.
- Prefer a wired connection for a machine that will be online continuously, when practical.
- Store world backups somewhere separate from the active server folder.
Download and start BDS
- Download the Bedrock Dedicated Server package from Minecraft’s official server documentation.
- Extract the ZIP into an empty, dedicated folder. Keeping server files separate from personal documents makes updates and backups easier.
- Launch the provided executable or command-line file. On first start, the server creates its working folders and world files.
- Stop the process cleanly before editing files or copying a world. A forced shutdown during a save can damage the world.
Choose the world and basic rules
The generated configuration lets you select or place the desired world. Microsoft’s setup guidance also documents an allow-list for a private server. Use an allow-list when only known friends should join instead of relying solely on secrecy of the address.

The main settings are stored in server.properties. Review the entries for game mode, difficulty, maximum players and the IPv4 listening port. Set the maximum-player value to a realistic limit for the computer and group, then restart the server after configuration changes when the documentation or the server log requires it.
Open the network path carefully
- Choose the Bedrock port in
server.propertiesand record it for your connection plan. - Allow the server application and selected port through the host computer’s firewall.
- If players are connecting from the internet, forward that port on the router to the server computer’s local address. The official documentation confirms the port setting but does not prescribe one universal router layout; router interfaces, double-NAT arrangements and ISP policies vary.
- Test from outside the home network rather than assuming that a local test proves internet reachability.
- Give the server address and port only to the intended players through a private channel.
Do not expose more ports than the server needs. Keep the operating system and server software updated, use a strong administrator password where applicable, and remove players from the allow-list when they should no longer have access.
Connect PS4 players to BDS
Bedrock Dedicated Server is designed for Bedrock clients, but the PS4 user interface for entering an arbitrary external server can change by Minecraft or PlayStation version. Some console versions may expose a compatible connection method through Friends or LAN discovery, while others may not provide the same direct server-entry controls available on PC. Before building your entire group around BDS, test the current PS4 connection path with one account. If the PS4 client cannot reach the server through the currently supported interface, Realms is the more predictable cross-platform option.

Protect the world before changes
Copy the world before updating server software, changing major settings or importing it into another hosting method. Keep more than one dated backup and store at least one copy away from the machine that runs BDS. For a Realm, use the world-download or backup controls exposed by the current Realms interface before replacing a world.

Control who can play
Use Microsoft-account gamertags for Realm invitations and remove old invitations when the group changes. On BDS, enable and maintain the documented allow-list for a private server. Avoid posting a home IP address publicly; share the address and port only with the people who need them.
Watch availability
A Realm’s service remains online independently of the owner’s console. A LAN world is available only while the host world is running. BDS is available only while the server process, host computer, network and forwarding rules are working. Make that distinction clear to players so they know whether to contact the world owner or the server administrator.
Troubleshooting PS4 connection problems
The world or Realm is not visible
- Confirm the PS4 is using Bedrock Edition and has updated to a compatible version.
- Confirm the intended Microsoft account is linked to PSN, rather than a different account that has no invitation.
- Check the PS4’s PlayStation online multiplayer subscription.
- For a hosted world, confirm that the host is actually online and that the world is open.
- For a Realm, verify the invitation gamertag, privacy settings and the Realm subscription status.
LAN does not appear
- Put the host and PS4 on the same non-guest local network.
- Reopen the world settings and check both Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players.
- Start the world after enabling those settings, then refresh the PS4’s Play screen.
- Temporarily check whether the host firewall is blocking local Minecraft traffic, while keeping the firewall enabled and creating only the needed exception.
The dedicated server process runs but nobody can join
- Confirm the BDS process is still running and has not stopped with an error in its log.
- Check that the server’s configured IPv4 port matches the port allowed through the firewall and forwarded by the router.
- Test the route from outside the home network; a local connection can succeed even when router forwarding or ISP NAT blocks internet access.
- Check that the maximum-player setting has not been reached.
- Confirm the PS4’s current Minecraft version exposes a supported way to connect to that external server.
A player is rejected after joining
- Check the allow-list and the exact Microsoft gamertag spelling.
- Confirm the player is using the account that received the Realm invitation or BDS permission.
- Check privacy and communication settings on the Microsoft and PlayStation accounts.
- Ask the player to update Bedrock before changing server files.
Which method should you use?
Choose LAN when
Everyone is in the same home, the host can keep the world open, and no one needs to play while the host is away. It has the least setup and no separate hosting subscription, but it ends when the host stops the world.
Choose Realms when
You want the least technical work and a world that friends can access without the owner’s console running. It is the best default for most PS4 groups that value dependable access over server-level customization. Budget for the recurring subscription and verify current plan limits before inviting a large group.
Choose Bedrock Dedicated Server when
You already have a supported Windows or Ubuntu machine, understand firewall and router configuration, want an allow-list and server-property control, and are prepared to maintain backups and updates. Confirm PS4 external-server connectivity first, because console connection options can differ by version.
