To host the New Life SMP that uses six lives and random Origins, install the New Life SMP modpack v8 on a Fabric server for Minecraft 1.19.2. This is a modpack server, not a Paper plugin server. Plan for about 6 GB of RAM; a CurseForge listing summary suggests 7 GB or more for groups. Configure access controls and any hardcore rules while the server is stopped, then create a new world so those settings are written correctly.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
The latest official New Life SMP file identified is v8, listed on 13 July 2023. No official 1.21 build was found, so every player should use the same 1.19.2 Fabric profile. A separate Modrinth project called “The New Life Modpack” is a different fan-made pack and should not be substituted.

New Life SMP is a Minecraft modpack attributed to DAQEM on CurseForge. Its defining rules come from the Origins mod and a six-life system: each player starts with six lives, and a death removes one. The pack then assigns a random Origin (a class with its own abilities and restrictions). Hosting it means running the complete Fabric modpack on the server and having every player install the matching client pack.
That distinction matters because a normal plugin server cannot reproduce the pack simply by installing a few plugins. Plugins run on server software such as Paper; New Life SMP is distributed as a Fabric modpack with client-side and server-side files that must match.
#1 Best Overall
Version you should install
- Modpack: New Life SMP v8.
- Minecraft: 1.19.2.
- Loader: Fabric.
- Listing date: 13 July 2023, the newest file identified.
- 1.21 status: no official New Life SMP build for Minecraft 1.21 was found.
The CurseForge listing says only its author can update the pack to a newer Minecraft version. Do not treat 1.21.x “Origins SMP” packs as New Life SMP v8. The unrelated Modrinth “The New Life Modpack” is described as a pack for players on another server, with 1.21.x compatibility, performance features and voice chat; the reviewed listing does not describe the six-lives or Origins rules.

Recommended Free Tools
| Choice | What players get | Version and software | Memory guidance | Setup effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Life SMP modpack | Six lives, random Origins and the pack’s complete content | Fabric server on Minecraft 1.19.2 | About 6 GB recommended by a hosting guide; 7 GB or more suggested for groups in a CurseForge listing summary | Higher: server and every client must use the same modpack |
| Paper plugin SMP | Mostly vanilla Minecraft with server-managed rules and protection plugins | Paper; not the New Life SMP modpack | Not stated in the cited material; size it for your view distance, plugins and player count | Lower for clients, but you must design the rules and plugin stack |
Use the modpack when the six-life rules are the point
Select the modpack if your group wants Origins abilities and the six-life progression exactly as packaged. A host that offers a modpack installer can download and place the files for you. One provider guide specifically says its installer can pre-install New Life SMP and recommends 6 GB of RAM.
Use Paper when you only want a themed SMP
Choose Paper if friends want a near-vanilla server with a whitelist, protection, rollbacks and building tools, or if you need a modern Minecraft version that New Life SMP does not support. This is a different project: it does not provide the modpack’s random Origins or six-life mechanic unless you find and validate separate plugins.
Requirements and preparation
- Matching game files: every player needs Minecraft 1.19.2, Fabric and the same New Life SMP v8 release.
- Server memory: reserve roughly 6 GB; allow at least 7 GB when the group size and installed content justify it.
- Persistent availability: an always-on host avoids relying on a home computer being powered on.
- Storage: leave room for the world, logs, backups and uploaded files.
- Administrative access: you need the host panel’s file manager or equivalent access to edit
server.properties, upload a world and manage the whitelist. - Backups: make a copy before changing world settings, replacing a world folder or editing NBT data.
For self-hosting, install the Java runtime and Fabric server files required by Minecraft 1.19.2, keep the machine connected to the internet, and use the server’s normal start and stop controls. The exact Java package and launch command depend on your operating system and the Fabric installer version; use the runtime and launch instructions supplied with those files rather than mixing versions.
Option A: install New Life SMP with a modpack host
This is the least manual route when your provider has a New Life SMP entry in its modpack installer.
- Create a server plan. Choose a plan with at least the 6 GB recommendation. If several people will explore simultaneously, use the 7 GB-or-more guidance as a starting point rather than treating it as a guarantee for every group.
- Open the modpack installer. In the host control panel, look for a section named Modpacks, Minecraft Versions or Installers. Search for “New Life SMP” and select the v8 release that targets Minecraft 1.19.2 on Fabric. Do not select a similarly named 1.21 pack.
- Install into a clean instance. Stop or wipe the default server instance if the panel asks you to. Installing over unrelated mods can leave duplicate or incompatible files.
- Start once, then stop. Let the server generate its configuration and world folders. Stop it from the panel before editing files; settings changed while the server is running can be overwritten when it shuts down.
- Set access controls. Edit
server.propertieswhile stopped. For a private group, setwhite-list=trueandenforce-whitelist=true. Start the server or use the console to run/whitelist add PlayerNamefor each approved player. - Decide on spawn building. Set
spawn-protection=0if players should be able to build around the world spawn. Keep the default protection instead if you want the spawn area reserved. - Configure the world. Set a new value for
level-name, or remove the generated world folder only after backing it up. A new world is required for the hardcore flag to be written reliably. - Apply any hardcore choice. Set
hardcore=trueif you want vanilla hardcore behavior in addition to the modpack’s life system. Save the file while the server is stopped, then start the server and verify the result with a test account before inviting the group. - Share the connection details. Give players the address and the exact modpack profile. They should launch the same Fabric 1.19.2 instance, not an unmodded client.
Upload an existing world
Use the host’s file manager to upload an existing world folder, place it beside the server’s other world folders and set level-name to that folder name. Stop the server before replacing files. Keep the original copy offline until you have entered the uploaded world, checked inventories and confirmed that the modpack loads without missing-content errors.
Option B: self-host the Fabric server
Self-hosting gives you control over files and backups but makes you responsible for the operating system, Java installation, network reachability and uptime.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
- Prepare a dedicated machine. Use a computer that can remain online and has enough free memory for the server plus the operating system. A stable connection is essential for a group server.
- Install the 1.19.2 Fabric server. Use the Fabric installer and the New Life SMP v8 server files for the exact Minecraft version. Keep the server in its own directory so its world, mods, configuration and logs are easy to back up.
- Accept the game terms and start once. Follow the files’ startup instructions, accept the required EULA, and let the server create its initial folders. Stop it before making configuration changes.
- Copy the modpack’s server content. Place the pack’s server-compatible mods and configuration files in the generated directories. Never combine files from the unrelated 1.21 “The New Life Modpack” with this 1.19.2 installation.
- Edit
server.properties. Apply the whitelist, spawn-protection and world-name choices described above. Sethardcore=trueonly if that rule is intentional. - Back up before opening the port. Preserve a copy of the world and configuration, then configure your router or firewall according to your operating system and network. The precise port-forwarding steps vary by router and are not part of the New Life pack itself.
- Test locally and remotely. Join from the host machine first, then have one player outside your local network connect. Check that the server list shows the expected version and that no client reports missing or extra mods.
Configure hardcore correctly
Hardcore is a built-in server setting; it does not require a plugin. The critical detail is timing: stop the server before editing server.properties. A guide warns that changes made while the process is running can be overwritten at shutdown.
- Stop the server from the hosting panel or console.
- Open the root
server.propertiesfile. - Change the line to
hardcore=true. - For a private server, also set
white-list=trueandenforce-whitelist=true. - Set
spawn-protection=0only when building at spawn is intended. - Save the file and choose a new
level-name, or remove the old world folder after making a backup. - Start the server and test death, respawn and joining with a disposable account before the real session.
The hardcore flag is written into the world when that world is created. Editing the property and restarting an already-created world may not convert it. One guide describes converting an existing world by editing its level.dat with an NBT editor such as NBTExplorer; make a complete backup first and treat this as a recovery operation, not the normal setup path.

Sources disagree about the interaction between hardcore and the difficulty line: one says hardcore disregards the configured difficulty and defaults to hard, while another says the difficulty entry is ignored and setting it to hard merely keeps the file consistent. Because that behavior is unresolved in the available documentation, do not promise a particular difficulty outcome. Test the generated world and verify the behavior against current Minecraft documentation before opening the server.
Hardcore versus New Life’s six lives
New Life already removes a life after death and provides six total lives. Vanilla hardcore adds a separate no-normal-respawn rule. Combining both can make the final death much harsher than the pack’s intended progression, so decide which experience your group wants:

- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.

- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
- Six-life New Life: keep the pack’s life system and leave the vanilla hardcore flag off if you want players to progress through all six lives normally.
- New Life plus hardcore: enable
hardcore=trueonly after testing how the pack handles death, spectator status and the final life.
Paper alternative: build a plugin-based SMP
If you are not installing the New Life modpack, a 2026 setup guide recommends Paper, a whitelist, grief protection and a fair spawn and difficulty. The following plugins were named in the guides:
| Plugin | Purpose |
|---|---|
| CoreProtect | Inspect and roll back block changes after griefing or accidents. |
| EssentialsX | Common administrative and player commands. |
| GriefPrevention | Let players claim land and protect builds. |
| WorldEdit | Speed up large, deliberate building work for trusted administrators. |
- Install a Paper server for the Minecraft version your group has agreed to use.
- Start it once, stop it, and place only plugin builds that support that version.
- Install CoreProtect, EssentialsX, GriefPrevention and WorldEdit from their official distribution channels.
- Restart and inspect the console for load errors before inviting players.
- Enable the whitelist and add players with
/whitelist add PlayerName. - Set a sensible spawn and difficulty, then test claims, rollback permissions and administrator commands with a non-owner account.
This route is easier for unmodded clients but is not a way to host New Life SMP v8. Label the server clearly so players do not expect Origins or six lives.

- Keep the server stopped while editing configuration or replacing world files.
- Use a unique world folder name and record it in

level.dat. - Enable both whitelist settings for a private group.
- Add administrators deliberately; powerful commands can bypass claims and life rules.
- Explain the six-life mechanic and the consequences of death before the first session.
- Test a player joining with the exact 1.19.2 Fabric profile and v8 pack.
- Keep a second backup outside the live server directory.
Troubleshooting common failures
Players see a version or mod mismatch
Confirm that the server and client both use Minecraft 1.19.2, Fabric and New Life SMP v8. Remove unrelated mods and do not mix files from a 1.21 pack. A mismatch can occur even when the launcher displays a similar pack name.
The server starts with a fresh world
Check the exact spelling of level-name and confirm that the uploaded folder is in the server’s world directory, not nested one level too deep. Stop the server before correcting it and keep the original upload untouched.
Best Value
Hardcore appears not to apply
Verify that hardcore=true was saved while the server was stopped, then create a new world. The flag is stored at world creation; changing the property for an existing world is not a dependable conversion method.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Players cannot build at spawn
Set spawn-protection=0 if unrestricted building there is intended. Restart after saving and test with a non-operator account, because operator permissions can hide protection problems.
The server becomes unstable as more players join
Check memory allocation first. The available hosting guidance starts at 6 GB for New Life SMP and suggests 7 GB or more for groups. If usage remains high, reduce simultaneous exploration, remove unneeded server content and move to a larger plan rather than adding random optimization mods that may break pack compatibility.
Operating the server after launch
Backups
Back up the world while the server is stopped or by using a provider’s snapshot system that guarantees a consistent copy. Keep dated backups before updates, major builds and any NBT edit. A six-life server makes world loss especially damaging because player progression is part of the game’s rules.
Updates
Do not update individual mods casually. New Life SMP v8 is tied to Minecraft 1.19.2 and Fabric, and the CurseForge listing states that only its author can update the pack for a newer Minecraft version. When a new official release appears, test it on a copy of the world before replacing the live installation.
Community rules
Publish whether vanilla hardcore is enabled, how the six lives are counted, what happens after a player reaches zero lives, and who can use administrative commands. Use the whitelist from the first launch, and keep rollback access limited to trusted administrators.
Quick Recap
