Choose the correct Prominence Classic branch
“Prominence Classic” refers to the Prominence II Classic project on CurseForge. It has separate Forge and NeoForge releases, both targeting Minecraft 1.20.1. Select the branch before downloading the client or server files.

The CurseForge files index lists Prominence II Classic v2.8.0 as the newest listed NeoForge release, dated July 12, 2024, and Prominence II [Classic] v2.2.0 as the Forge release dated January 29, 2024. A client running Forge is not interchangeable with a NeoForge client merely because both use Minecraft 1.20.1.
What must match
- Minecraft: Java Edition version: 1.20.1.
- Prominence Classic release number.
- Mod loader: Forge or NeoForge.
- Mods, configuration files, scripts, and server-side libraries supplied by that same pack.
If a player receives a mod-list mismatch, loader error, missing registry entry, or repeated disconnect, compare these four items before changing Java arguments or world files.

Where to get the server pack
Open the Prominence II Classic project’s CurseForge Files page and download the server archive for your chosen branch. For Forge, the named archive is Prominence_II_Classic_Server_Pack_v2.2.0.zip. For NeoForge, select the server pack associated with the v2.8.0 NeoForge release rather than assuming the Forge archive will work.
The Classic project page displayed 1,129,966 downloads in a snapshot accessed October 15, 2026. That figure is a project-page total, not a measure of server capacity or performance.

Download from the website when instructions require it
The official hosting guidance for Prominence editions says to use the CurseForge website rather than the app for server-pack downloads. Follow the project’s current file labels and release notes, and retain the original ZIP so you can reconstruct the installation if a later update goes wrong.
Install a self-hosted server
Use a dedicated folder on a computer with sufficient free storage, a stable network connection, and a 64-bit Java runtime suitable for the selected pack. The Classic project page identifies the archive and loader but does not publish a Classic-specific Java version or a guaranteed script filename, so the files inside your downloaded archive take precedence over commands copied from another Prominence edition.
- Create a dedicated directory. Make a folder used only for this server, such as
Prominence-Classic-Server. Avoid placing it inside a cloud-synchronized directory where files can be locked or partially uploaded. - Extract the complete ZIP. Unpack every folder and file from the server archive. Keep the supplied
mods, config, scripts, libraries, and other directories together. - Read the included instructions. Look for a README or server-install document and identify the start script or launch command for Windows, macOS, or Linux. Do not invent a script name or reuse a command from Hasturian Era or another edition.
- Confirm Java is available. In a terminal, verify that a 64-bit Java executable is installed using your operating system’s normal Java-version command. If the supplied instructions specify a particular runtime, install that runtime before launching.
- Run the supplied start script or command. Launch from the server directory so relative paths to libraries and configuration files resolve correctly. The first run normally creates world and configuration files and may stop while waiting for EULA acceptance.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA. Stop the process, open the generated
eula.txt, change the EULA setting totrueonly after reading and accepting Mojang’s terms, save it, and run the supplied launcher again. - Complete first-run configuration. After the server reaches a ready state, stop it cleanly before editing settings. Set the server name, difficulty, game rules, operator accounts, whitelist, view distance, and other values in
server.propertiesaccording to your group’s needs. - Start and test locally. Connect from the host computer using the local address shown by your operating system or the server console. Check that the world loads, players can move, and the console reports no repeating mod or registry errors.
Keep the installation internally consistent
Do not delete individual mods to make a client connect unless the pack’s documentation explicitly calls for it. Prominence’s scripts and configuration can depend on the supplied file set. If you experiment, copy the entire server directory and world first so you can roll back.

Configure administrators, whitelist, and backups
Operator and whitelist controls
Grant operator status only to trusted accounts. Use the server console or the pack’s documented command interface to add operators and whitelist players, then test a non-operator account so you know ordinary players cannot change protected settings. Keep a written list of who has elevated access.
Back up before every meaningful change
Stop the server cleanly before copying its world. Back up the world directory together with the server configuration that defines its mods and settings. Store at least one copy outside the host computer. Make another backup before changing Prominence versions, replacing the server pack, removing a mod, or editing world-generation settings; these changes can make an existing world difficult or impossible to load on the previous setup.
Update deliberately
Never overwrite a working installation while it is running. Copy the old directory, install the new pack into a separate directory, and test a copy of the world first. All players should update their clients to the same release and loader before joining the upgraded server.
Let friends connect from outside your home
Players on the same home network can usually connect through the host computer’s private address. Friends on the internet need a reachable path to the server.
Port forwarding
- Give the host computer a stable private address, preferably through a DHCP reservation in the router.
- In the router’s port-forwarding section, forward Minecraft’s default port, 25565, from the router to that private address. The official self-hosting guide identifies 25565 as the default port.
- Allow the Java server through the host operating system’s firewall for the network profile you use.
- Restart the server and have a player outside your home network test the connection using your public IP address or a DNS name you control.
If you changed the server’s port in server.properties, forward that chosen port instead and give players the address in host:port form. Do not publish your public address in open forums.

When forwarding does not work
Some internet services place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, and some routers or providers block inbound connections. In that case, a VPN-based virtual LAN such as Radmin VPN can provide another path, as described by the official Cinderstone guide. Every participant must install and join the same virtual network, and players then use the host’s VPN address. A VPN does not remove the need to secure operator access or maintain backups.
Common network symptoms
- “Connection refused” immediately: the server is stopped, listening on another port, or blocked by a firewall.
- Timeout from friends but local connection works: check the router rule, host address reservation, firewall, public IP, and whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT.
- Only some players can connect: verify that they are using the same address path (local, public, or VPN) and that their client versions match.
- Address works one day and not the next: a changing public IP may require a dynamic DNS service or a newly shared address.
Keep the server online and recover from failures
A self-hosted server is available only while the host computer is powered on, awake, connected to the internet, and running the Java process. Sleep, restart, power loss, a crashed process, or a disconnected network takes the world offline. Disable automatic sleep during planned play sessions, but keep the operating system and Java security updates current.
The owner is responsible for backups, crash recovery, mod updates, port forwarding, DDoS exposure, and moderation tools. Keep a log of pack versions and configuration changes. When the process crashes, save the console output, restore the most recent known-good backup if the world will not start, and test the replacement in a separate directory rather than repeatedly launching a damaged world.
Safe shutdown and restart routine
- Warn players and use the server’s normal stop command instead of closing the terminal window.
- Wait until the console confirms that chunks and player data have been saved.
- Copy the world and relevant configuration files to your backup location.
- Apply one change at a time, restart, and inspect the console for errors before inviting players back.
What every player needs
Prominence Classic is a Minecraft: Java Edition project with client-and-server support. Each player needs Java Edition, the same Prominence Classic release as the server, Minecraft 1.20.1, and the matching Forge or NeoForge loader. A different loader, even with the same Minecraft version, is a different installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Ask players to remove or disable unrelated mods while troubleshooting; extra client-only mods can cause crashes or visual issues, but removing server-required content is not a safe fix.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
| Consideration | Self-hosted at home | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription cost | No hosting subscription; you supply the computer, electricity, storage, and internet service. | Recurring fee; the provider supplies the always-on machine and service infrastructure. |
| Availability | Offline when your computer sleeps, restarts, loses power, or disconnects. | Can remain online while your personal computer is off, subject to the provider’s service status. |
| Setup | You install Java and the pack, run the launcher, configure the firewall, and arrange port forwarding or a VPN. | May offer one-click installation, web controls, scheduled tasks, and automated backups, but you must still select the exact compatible pack. |
| Maintenance | You handle updates, backups, crashes, moderation, and network security. | The provider may supply backup and mitigation features; modpack compatibility and in-game administration remain your responsibility. |
| Classic resource guidance | No authoritative Classic CPU or RAM minimum is published. | No authoritative Classic baseline is published in the cited hosting material; confirm support for Forge v2.2.0 or NeoForge v2.8.0 before paying. |
Managed hosting can be worthwhile when the group needs an always-online world or the host cannot configure a router. Confirm in writing that the service supports the precise Classic branch, loader, and Minecraft version. A provider’s advertised resources for another Prominence edition are not a Classic requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much RAM does Prominence Classic need?
No authoritative Classic-specific minimum RAM amount, CPU benchmark, or guaranteed launch-script filename is published in the available official material. Do not label a number as a Classic requirement simply because it appears in advice for another edition.
Cinderstone’s official hosting page gives guidance of 8 GB for three to four players plus 1 GB per additional player for Prominence II: Hasturian Era managed hosting. That is explicitly Hasturian Era guidance, not a measured or guaranteed Prominence II Classic requirement. Treat it only as a different-edition reference when evaluating a host, and monitor actual memory use, garbage-collection pauses, tick rate, and storage performance on your own installation.

- Leave memory for the operating system and other services; do not assign all physical RAM to Java.
- Watch the server console for out-of-memory errors, repeated pauses, or a falling tick rate while players explore new terrain.

Troubleshoot the problems that stop a server from launching
Loader or version mismatch
Compare the client and server’s Minecraft version, Prominence release, and loader character for character. Replace the entire server pack with the correct branch if you downloaded Forge for a NeoForge client or vice versa. Do not try to solve a loader mismatch by copying isolated JAR files.
Missing files or failed dependency errors
Re-extract the original archive into a clean directory and confirm that the supplied libraries, scripts, configs, and mods are present. A partial extraction, antivirus quarantine, or interrupted download can leave a server that appears to start but fails when a world loads.
EULA loop
Stop the process, edit the generated eula.txt only after accepting the terms, save it in the server directory, and rerun the supplied launcher. If the file regenerates, you may be editing a different directory from the one the script uses.
World will not load after an update
Restore the pre-update backup and confirm that the world was created with the same mod set. Test the newer pack on a copy, not the only production world. If the pack’s release notes require a migration, follow those instructions before allowing players to join.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Players disconnect with registry or mod errors
Verify the player’s client pack is the same release and loader as the server. Have the player reinstall that exact profile rather than adding random replacement mods. Compare the client log and server console for the first named mod or registry entry; later errors are often consequences of that initial mismatch.
Launch checklist
- Chosen Forge v2.2.0 or NeoForge v2.8.0 branch.
- Minecraft 1.20.1 and the matching loader installed for every player.
- Correct Classic server pack downloaded from the CurseForge Files page.
- Complete archive extracted to a dedicated directory.
- Included instructions and operating-system launch script reviewed.
- 64-bit Java runtime installed and usable.
- EULA accepted in the server directory.
- Operators, whitelist, difficulty, and server properties configured.
- World backed up before updates or configuration experiments.
- Port 25565 forwarded, firewall opened, or a shared VPN path configured for remote players.
- Host computer set to remain awake and connected during play.
- Players given the exact release and loader, not merely “Prominence Classic.”
Key takeaways
The reliable setup is branch-first: select Forge v2.2.0 with its named Forge server pack or NeoForge v2.8.0 with its matching NeoForge pack, keep every client on Minecraft 1.20.1 and the same loader, and follow the archive’s own launch instructions. Home hosting avoids a subscription but makes you responsible for uptime, networking, backups, updates, and recovery. Remote friends need port 25565 forwarded to the host or a common VPN route. Because no authoritative Classic RAM minimum has been published, measure your own workload instead of presenting another edition’s figures as a requirement.
