You cannot run a Rust Console Edition server from an Xbox or PlayStation. To host a persistent world, rent a compatible community server from a game-server provider, configure it in that provider’s control panel, assign yourself owner or administrator permissions, and then have players join through Rust’s in-game Community browser. A compatible service can let Xbox and PlayStation 5 players use the same server.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The practical process is straightforward, but the details matter: the host must explicitly support Rust Console Edition, your players still need their platform’s online subscription, and settings such as region, wipe timing, slots, backups and custom commands differ between providers.

Rust Console Edition uses hosted community servers rather than a “listen server” started by the console that owns the game. Your Xbox or PlayStation acts as a client. The rented server runs continuously in a provider’s data centre, keeps the world available when you are offline, and appears in Rust’s Community server list after it has started and registered.
This is different from inviting friends to a normal multiplayer session. A party can connect to a server, but the party leader is not supplying the server hardware. If you cancel the rental, the provider stops hosting the world and access ends according to that provider’s retention policy.

Can an Xbox host a Rust server?
No. An Xbox Series X|S can play Rust Console Edition and connect to a community server, but it does not run the persistent server process. You need a rented service that advertises support for the console edition.
Can a PS5 host a private Rust server?
No. A PlayStation 5 also connects as a player. To make a private or invite-only experience, rent a community server and use its password, access-list or moderation controls if the provider and game build expose those options.

Requirements before you buy a server
Supported game and consoles
The current store listings identify Rust Console Edition for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. The Xbox and PlayStation listings show June 26, 2025 as the release date in their 2025 product information. Confirm that the host’s plan names Rust Console Edition, not only the PC version of Rust. A PC-only plan is not a substitute.
Online multiplayer subscriptions
Every player needs the online entitlement required by their platform. Microsoft’s Xbox listing specifies Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate for online console multiplayer. Sony’s PlayStation listing specifies PlayStation Plus. These subscription names, tiers and prices can change, so check the current store page for the account’s region before troubleshooting a connection.
| Platform | Console listed for Rust Console Edition | Online requirement shown in 2025 store listing | Store-listed player information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox | Xbox Series X|S | Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate | 2–100 online multiplayer players |
| PlayStation | PlayStation 5 | PlayStation Plus | Supports up to 99 online players |
The figures in the final column are storefront descriptions, not a promise that every rented server accepts that many simultaneous users. Your provider’s slot limit, the game’s current build and the plan you purchase determine the usable capacity.
Who supports the console edition?
Double Eleven develops and supports Rust Console Edition. Facepunch’s support team states that Facepunch does not provide support for the console edition and directs console questions to Double Eleven resources. For a crash, account, progression or console-build issue, start with Double Eleven’s support channels rather than assuming a PC Rust solution applies.
What is allowed?
Facepunch’s Community Server and Hosting Guidelines, updated July 15, 2025, permit private, unofficial and community servers when they are fairly labelled and comply with the guidelines and applicable law. Your server name and description should make its rules and status clear. Do not present an unofficial server as an official one, and moderate harassment, cheating and illegal content.

How to choose a compatible host
Do not choose solely on the lowest monthly price. A server that cannot list correctly for both console platforms, has no nearby region or offers no recovery controls can cost more time than it saves. Check the following on the plan page or ask support before paying.
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Console-edition support | PC Rust and console Rust are separate products. | The plan explicitly names Rust Console Edition and states the supported console generation. |
| Xbox/PlayStation crossplay | Your group may include both platforms. | The listing says Xbox and PlayStation players can join the same community server. |
| Player slots | Slots cap simultaneous players regardless of the store’s headline figure. | The exact slot range, upgrade cost and whether reserved slots are available. |
| Region and latency | Distance to the data centre affects ping and responsiveness. | Available regions, a server-location selector and a status or incident page. |
| Wipes and backups | A mistake or scheduled wipe can remove progression. | Manual wipe controls, automatic schedules, backup frequency and restore procedure. |
| Administration | Owners need to moderate and change settings. | Owner/admin assignment, ban or kick tools and console-compatible command support. |
| Custom boot commands | Some settings are passed at startup rather than through individual switches. | Whether the panel accepts generated custom boot commands and how they are applied. |
| Protection and availability | Outages and attacks interrupt access. | DDoS protection, uptime terms, maintenance notices and support response times. |
| Modification limits | Console servers do not automatically support PC plugins. | A clear list of permitted settings; never assume unrestricted mods are available. |
| Price and renewal | Hosting is normally recurring. | Monthly price, taxes, renewal rate, slot upgrades, storage fees and cancellation terms. |
Provider regions, slots, plans, prices and features change. Record the exact plan and region you selected so that a later support request includes useful information.

1. Select a console-compatible plan
Choose a location close to the majority of your players and a slot count that covers your actual group. If players are split across continents, ask the host whether it can offer a central region and what latency users normally see there. A smaller nearby server is often preferable to a larger server on another continent.
2. Place the rental order
After payment, the provider normally creates a control-panel account, assigns a server address or listing record, and displays the selected region, slots and renewal date. Save the panel URL, server identifier and recovery details. Do not publish administrative credentials in a Discord, console chat or shared document.
3. Open the control panel and configure basic identity
Stop the server before changing startup settings unless the panel explicitly supports live editing. Set a distinctive server name, description and rules. Include whether the world is private, the expected wipe day and any unusual gather or combat rules. Avoid names that could make an unofficial server look official.
4. Set gameplay rates and permitted options
Common community controls include gather rates, stack sizes and other server variables exposed by the provider. Enter only values documented for the console edition. A control labelled “Rust plugins” or “PC mod framework” does not prove that the same feature works on console.

5. Apply custom boot commands when required
Some hosting panels provide a command builder. Select the settings you want, generate the custom boot command, then paste the complete command into the panel’s startup or launch-parameter field exactly as instructed. Save the configuration and restart the server. Keep a copy of the working command in a private administrator record so you can restore it after a reset.
6. Assign the owner or administrator
Use the provider’s owner/admin setup instructions before inviting players. The process may require an account identifier or an in-game identity rather than a display name. Test an administrative action with a second trusted player, then remove temporary permissions from anyone who does not need them. Do not give every regular player owner access.
7. Choose and announce the wipe schedule
Set the wipe interval offered by the panel and write the next date and time in your community’s announcement channel. A wipe resets progression, so state the time zone and whether the date is a full-map or blueprint wipe if the service distinguishes them. If your group is casual, a predictable schedule is usually less disruptive than changing it whenever the server becomes quiet.
8. Start the server and wait for registration
Start the instance from the panel and allow time for the process to finish loading. A panel showing “running” does not always mean that the Community browser has indexed the listing immediately. Copy the exact server name, including punctuation and spaces.
9. Test discoverability from a console
On Xbox or PlayStation, open Rust Console Edition, select the Community tab and search the exact server name. Confirm the region, slot count and rules shown in the listing. Join with an administrator account first. If the server is visible but rejects the connection, note the displayed error before changing settings.
10. Invite the group through Rust’s party system
Rust’s party system allows the party leader to connect the party to a server. Have everyone update to the same game version, form the party, and select the community server. Members then connect to that same server and initially spawn near one another on the same team. Players who join later can search the listing directly if they are no longer in the original party.
Crossplay between Xbox and PlayStation
The cited console-hosting workflow lists community servers for Xbox and PlayStation crossplay. Crossplay means the two platform groups use the same hosted world; it does not remove either platform’s online-subscription requirement. Each player must still have an active Game Pass Core or Ultimate entitlement on Xbox or PlayStation Plus on PS5.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Crossplay troubleshooting should begin with the server listing itself. If Xbox players can see the server but PlayStation players cannot, compare the exact name, confirm that the host has enabled the cross-platform console configuration, and check whether the listing has finished propagating. If neither platform can see it, inspect the server state and provider status page before changing gameplay rates.

Region, ping and connection quality
Players can join servers outside their home region, but official support recommends the lowest-ping server for smoother play and less network lag. Select a host region near most participants rather than choosing a region because its label sounds familiar. For a group divided between regions, ask several players to test latency during the hours you normally play.
- Choose the nearest practical data centre to the largest part of the group.
- Prefer a provider that publishes service status and maintenance notices.
- Use wired Ethernet or a strong Wi-Fi connection for the first test; do not diagnose server performance over an unstable local link.
- Compare several players’ results. One player’s poor route does not prove that the server is down.
Changing the region after purchase may require creating a new instance or contacting support. Ask about world transfer and backup availability before moving; do not assume a saved world follows automatically.
Wipes, backups and day-to-day administration
Plan wipes as a community event
A wipe is not a routine restart. It removes some or all progression according to the schedule and wipe type. Publish the date, time zone and expected downtime in advance, and leave enough time for players to update their consoles before the new cycle.
Back up before risky changes
Back up the world before changing startup commands, rates or access settings when the provider offers that control. Confirm what a backup contains and how long it is retained. A “backup” may be a downloadable configuration rather than a complete restorable world, so read the provider’s description.

Only one platform cannot connect
Check crossplay support on the purchased plan, platform subscription status and game-version updates. Have the affected player restart Rust and search again. If the provider recently changed the server configuration, stop and start the instance once, then retest from both platforms.
The server appears but connection fails
Confirm that the server is not full, the password or access list is correct, and the player has not been banned accidentally. Compare the error from a second account. If only one household fails, test its local network and NAT; if every player fails, send the provider the server identifier, region, exact error and time of the attempt.
Players experience severe lag
Check the server region and provider incident page first. If the region is distant from most players, ask whether relocation is possible. A low player count does not guarantee low ping, and a high ping can originate in a player’s route rather than the host.
Costs and capacity: what can and cannot be stated in advance
There is no single universal Rust Console hosting price in the available product information. Monthly cost depends on provider, region, slot count, backups, protection and billing term. Treat any advertised price as a provider-specific offer that can change, and check taxes, renewal rates and optional upgrades at checkout.
| Commercial detail | What is established | What you must confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly rental | Hosting is obtained from a third-party provider. | Current recurring price, currency, tax and renewal amount. |
| Slots | Provider plans impose their own player limits. | Included slots, maximum slots and upgrade pricing. |
| Region | Low ping is recommended; regions vary by provider. | Available data centres and relocation policy. |
| Backups | Backup controls may be offered by the host. | Frequency, retention, restore fees and whether worlds are included. |
| Uptime and protection | These are provider terms, not guaranteed by the game store listing. | DDoS protection, maintenance policy, SLA and support route. |
Console limitations and common mistakes
- Buying a PC Rust plan: Similar branding does not mean the server is compatible. Require explicit console-edition support.
- Assuming the console can host locally: The console is a player device; the persistent world is rented.
- Expecting PC plugins: Do not install or promise PC plugins, unrestricted mods or unsupported commands unless the provider documents them for the console edition.
- Skipping the subscription check: A paid server does not replace Game Pass Core or Ultimate on Xbox or PlayStation Plus on PS5.
- Choosing a distant region: A cheaper or larger plan in another continent can produce worse play than a smaller nearby plan.
- Changing settings without a backup: Keep the previous working startup command and use the provider’s restore process when available.
- Failing to announce wipes: Players may treat a reset as data loss or misconduct if the schedule was not published.
- Over-sharing admin credentials: Use individual permissions and remove former moderators promptly.
Support boundaries
For billing, server status, slots, region changes, backups, startup commands and panel errors, contact the hosting provider. For console-game bugs, progression problems or platform-specific behavior, use Double Eleven’s Rust Console support resources. Facepunch’s support statement, updated September 23, 2025, says: “Facepunch doesn’t offer support for the Rust console Edition. The Rust console edition is purely supported and developed by Double Eleven.”
When opening a ticket, include the provider, server identifier, region, console platform, game version, exact error text, approximate time and whether another player can reproduce it. That information separates a listing problem from a local network or account problem.
Quick Recap
A reliable launch checklist
- Confirm every player owns the console edition for a supported console and has the required online subscription.
- Buy a plan that explicitly supports Rust Console Edition and Xbox/PlayStation crossplay.
- Select a region close to most players and record the plan’s slot limit.
- Set the server name, rules, rates and stack settings in the provider panel.
- Apply documented custom boot commands only after checking console compatibility.
- Assign one owner and limited moderator permissions.
- Configure backups and publish the wipe date and time zone.
- Start the server and wait for Community-browser registration.
- Search the exact name from Xbox and PS5 accounts.
- Form the Rust party, connect everyone, and test joining, moderation and recovery before announcing the server widely.
